Shotts gaffer fires warning ahead of Premier Division opener

Daily Record24-07-2025
The Bonny are all set for kick-off in the West of Scotland League this weekend
John McKeown has warned his Shotts side they must stop taking their foot off the gas in games as they prepare for their West of Scotland Premier Division opener this weekend.

The Hannah Park boss watched the Bonny blow a 3-0 half-time lead to draw 3-3 with Blantyre Vics on Saturday in their final friendly match of pre-season, where goals from Marc McKenzie, Liam Craig and Kieran McGuire appeared to put them on easy street.

That came off the back of his side easing up in the recent friendly wins over Fauldhouse and Thorniewood.

But a tougher test awaits on Saturday when Glenafton Athletic come calling (kick-off 2pm) in their top flight opener and McKeown has told his players he isn't happy with their recent habit.
He said: 'It has been a wee bit of a pattern in our pre-season, starting really well and doing well for the first half hour, then taking our foot off the gas. At Fauldhouse we were 5-0 up and then it finished 5-1, at Thorniewood we were 3-0 up and it finished 3-2, although in those ones we were bringing on kids.
'But on Saturday there was no excuse for it because we never made that many changes.
'I could accept the other two but on Saturday we kept the team strong because we had been taking our foot off the gas - and we still conceded three! I was quite annoyed by that.
'We are missing seven or eight players due to holidays but they will be back this week.

'It is about ironing out this bad habit because the first 45 minutes on Saturday was the best football I've seen us play at Hannah Park in a long time. We looked great, we praised the boys at half-time and then they go and do what they did, so we had a go at them. But it is better doing it now than in the league games.
'This weekend we'll play Glenafton, who are a really good side. We beat them in the West Cup last season and they beat us in the league at their place, then drew at Hannah Park.
'They've got a really experienced manager in Paul Paton, who has played at a really good level. He's really improved them over the last six months so it is going to be difficult.

'We'll need to make sure everyone works hard on the training pitch to be ready for it. I have seen a lot of positives and some really good stuff, but I have seen some negatives as well and I think we are a wee bit short in certain areas.'
McKeown revealed he is hoping to add to his squad before the weekend with defender Sam Greenwood out injured long term.
He added: 'Hopefully we have one new face in before Saturday. We've been dealt a huge blow with Sam, so we'll need to strengthen in that area.'

Albion Rovers losing to Thorniewood wasn't an 'upset', but boss wasn't happy

Sandy Clark says a first-round exit to West of Scotland League opposition wasn't a shock Albion Rovers boss Sandy Clark insisted being knocked out of the South Challenge Cup at the first hurdle by West of Scotland First Division side Thorniewood was not an upset. ‌ But he was far from happy with his side's performance in the penalty shootout that cost the Lowland League club their place in the competition. ‌ The sides fought out a 0-0 stalemate at Cliftonhill and the visitors prevailed 4-3 on spot kicks. ‌ And Clark said: 'I don't think it is an upset. Thorniewood have got a lot more experience and a much bigger budget than we have. 'If you look at the difference in leagues, we'd probably go in as favourites to most people but we should have won the game, it is as simple as that. 'We dominated, especially in the second half, and created loads of chances. Their goalkeeper was definitely their man of the match and when it goes to penalties I'm disappointed that we didn't execute the penalties as well as I'd have liked. 'I warned the guys beforehand; don't do a tippy-tappy, sidefoot effort. If you are going to hit it, hit it hard, but three of them elected not to take that advice. 'We missed three out of our six penalties and that is why we are out of the cup. ‌ 'The actual performance was really good in lots of ways. It was our first clean sheet of the season, we created a lot of chances and played a lot of good football. We just couldn't get that break in front of goal. 'We deserved to win the game but Thorniewood held out and won the penalties.' Clark now needs to lift his side for a league double header this week. ‌ Rovers are due to host Broxburn Athletic tonight (Tuesday) and on Saturday they travel to Gretna. Clark added: 'There's no such thing as an easy game and if we want to beat Broxburn, we need to play with the same effort and commitment as we did on Saturday and hope we get the breaks in front of goal. 'We've had a really good start to the season in lots of ways, so we are looking forward to the next game.'

Threave Rovers continue good start with 5-0 win over Kilsyth Athletic

The Castle Douglas side made it seven points from nine in the West of Scotland League's second division. Threave Rovers continued their good start to the season with a 5-0 win over Kilsyth Athletic on Saturday. ‌ Ross Irving kept up his fine form with the opener after just a few minutes, skipper Dylan Cairnie getting the second 10 minutes before the break. ‌ And when Harry Officer curled one home from 20 yards it was game over. ‌ Cairnie set up Irving for Threave's fourth – and the striker's third brace in three games before Liam Douglas completed the scoring. Threave boss Danny Dunglinson said: 'We scored early on, then they came back into the game and had a couple of chances. They'll probably feel they should have scored one and got level, but once we scored the second goal we were in total control. 'The wind was against us in the first half, it was a lot stronger than we realised and we got caught a couple of times, which was where their chances came from. 'Once we had the wind at our backs in the second half they couldn't get out and we scored another three goals. 'Once the third goal went in it was game over. It was important to get that and you can enjoy the rest of the game and be a bit more relaxed - and you take your chances when you're a bit more relaxed. ‌ 'We had five boys on the bench that would probably get in any West of Scotland premier team. 'We just felt with two games this week we had to get boys minutes, rather than playing the same team. It was a chance for us to rest a few boys, get them on after 60 or 70 minutes so they had minutes ahead of Tuesday but weren't going to be fatigued.' The game also saw the first appearance for summer signing Robbie Hogg. ‌ The striker joined Threave from South of Scotland League champs Lochar Thistle and put in a man of the match display after coming off the bench. Dunglinson said: 'He's been on holiday - he went on a Saturday so he automatically misses two games. It was his first game back but he had played pre-season. ‌ 'He came on and was man of the match, he came on after 20 minutes as Owen Brown came off injured and was the catalyst for everything. He pressed well and didn't stop running so that spreads throughout the whole team. 'He's going to be a big player for us the rest of the season.' Threave made it three wins in a row on Tuesday night with a 4-0 triumph at Maybole. ‌ Lewis Downie's goal had them in front at the break with Liam Douglas, Frazer Glen and Dylan Cairnie on target in the second half. Saturday sees Threave go to Easterhouse in The Finest South Region Challenge Cup, the Glasgow side having won promotion from the West of Scotland League Fourth Division last season. Dunglinson said: 'They came up last year and have started OK. It's always a tough place to go, we went there a few years ago and were beaten. It's not going to be easy going up there. 'It's a cup game so it's a nice wee break from the league. We'll take it seriously and try to win the game but it's also an opportunity for boys to get minutes that need minutes

East Kilbride YM boss forgives penalty miss as club bag first win in WOSFL

The Kirktonholme club picked up their maiden success in the Fourth Division since their move up from the amateur ranks EKYM boss Graeme Robertson was happy to forgive Greg Miller for his early penalty miss at Saltcoats as the striker redeemed himself by firing the club to their first-ever win in the West of Scotland League. ‌ Miller missed from the spot inside the first five minutes, but made amends moments later when he fired the visitors in front. ‌ Diarmid McCreadie then made sure of the points late on to land a maiden victory in the Fourth Division, lifting YM up to 11th on four points from four games. ‌ Robertson said: 'I'm really happy. The performance was really good. We missed a penalty early on and had about four one-on-ones with their goalkeeper, who had an excellent game, so it could have been more. 'I'm just happy to get the first three points on the board. 'Greg Miller had an excellent game but I think the penalty spot had a wee hole in it and the ball just rolled into it as he was about to hit it. It was just one of those things. 'That was before his goal and he ended up having an excellent game so I'll let him off with that miss. 'It was a difficult game in difficult conditions with the wind, but the boys dealt with it well.' ‌ The Kirktonholme side have also been boosted by the news two former players have performed a U-turn after quitting the club when they went semi-professional in the summer. Striker Ross McDonagh and midfielder Jordan Fletcher are now in the squad and Robertson said: 'That is a huge bonus because they are two great players for us. 'Ross played for the Scotland amateur international team and Jordan was our player of the year last season. They should be back in the next week or two. Ross is not an out-and-out centre forward, he plays more out wide. We've been missing a striker in the first few games so to have someone like that come in is huge. ‌ 'I knew things would turn in terms of results because we were getting players back.' YM are not in competitive action this weekend but they do have a friendly with Kilsyth Rangers arranged for Friday night at Kirktonholme. Robertson added: 'We've got Campbeltown in a couple of weeks for our next league game, but the Kilsyth friendly will be a good test for us. It will give us a chance to get players who have had limited game time on the pitch.'
