Colts RB Salvon Ahmed suffers ‘severe leg injury' after hip-drop tackle in training camp

WESTFIELD, Ind. — Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed suffered a 'severe leg injury' during training camp practice Sunday, Colts coach Shane Steichen announced. Practice was briefly stopped while Ahmed was carted off the field. The injury occurred when Ahmed broke a long run during an 11-on-11 period. He was tackled from behind by undrafted rookie safety Trey Washington, but when Washington grabbed Ahmed, who kept his legs churning, Washington used a hip-drop tackle to bring Ahmed down and landed on his lower right leg. Ahmed immediately grabbed his lower right leg and screamed in agony. Advertisement Steichen said the players in the developmental periods (essentially third-stringers and players lower than them on the depth chart) were instructed to tackle during 11-on-11. However, Steichen emphasized, Washington's hip-drop tackle was obviously the wrong way to bring Ahmed down. 'We don't encourage hip-drop tackles,' Steichen said. 'We know Trey is down in the dumps, and I don't think he was trying to do that. We're just trying to create an edge … especially in the developmental (periods). Those guys are gonna have to tackle come preseason. So, our thoughts and prayers are with Salvon, and we wish him a speedy recovery.' Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, both of whom have been team captains in each of the last two years, immediately consoled Ahmed after the injury. Ahmed's lower right leg was placed in an air cast, and the whole team eventually surrounded Ahmed to show their support. Free safety Cam Bynum led the team in a prayer for Ahmed before he was placed on a stretcher and carted away. Ahmed placed a towel over his head as he left the field, and the crowd gave him a round of applause. Practice was stopped for about 10 minutes while trainers attended to Ahmed. Steichen said he spoke to the team leaders, including linebacker Zaire Franklin, about whether or not to resume practice. Franklin is rehabbing from left ankle surgery and appeared in his first 7-on-7 period during training camp Sunday. He and his teammates chose to continue. 'I love Salvon,' Franklin said. 'I've known Salvon for about nine years. I knew him back when he was at (the University of Washington), back when I was training in Seattle as a young pup. Extremely tough (situation). Praying for him, loving on him. Obviously, I'm gonna shoot him a text. I know he's probably going through all kinds of mental stuff right now.' Advertisement Ahmed, who went undrafted in 2020, has played 38 games in his NFL career, all with the Miami Dolphins. His best season was with the Dolphins in 2020, when he totaled 75 carries for 319 yards and three TDs in just six games. Washington, who played collegiately at Ole Miss, looked distraught after injuring Ahmed. Franklin empathized with Washington and offered support. 'Young Trey, he's competing for a job, straight up,' Franklin said. 'So, he's out here trying to compete and trying to be better. We're warriors on that field. When we step on the field, we understand what the possibilities are. Obviously, we're a team. We're not trying to hurt each other, but at the same time, we're competing. These guys are trying to feed their families. It's a part of the game, but definitely a tough break for Salvon and definitely praying for him.'

WWE SummerSlam 2025: What Time Does Night 2 Start On Sunday?

WWE has a tough job on its hands. Following Night 1's explosive main event and surprise ending won't be easy, but Night 2 of SummerSlam has its own lineup of potentially explosive matches. The action begins at 6 p.m. ET. You can watch it on Peacock. Here is a look at the entire card. WWE SummerSlam Sunday Match Card - August 3 Undisputed WWE Championship Street Fight John Cena (c) vs. Cody Rhodes Women's World Championship Match Naomi (c) vs. Rhea Ripley vs. IYO SKY Intercontinental Championship Match Dominik Mysterio (c) vs. AJ Styles United States Championship Steel Cage Match Solo Sikoa (c) vs. Jacob Fatu Women's Intercontinental Championship No Disqualification Match Becky Lynch (c) vs. Lyra Valkyria WWE Tag Team Title Six-Pack TLC Match WWE Tag Team Champions The Wyatt Sicks vs. The Street Profits vs. The Motor City Machine Guns vs. #DIY vs. Fraxiom vs. Andrade & Rey FenixWhat Matches Could Steal the Show From John Cena and Cody Rhodes in the Main Event? Everyone will be waiting for the John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes main event. There is a chance that we could see all kinds of outside interference in this Street Fight. I'd be surprised if WWE didn't at least try to match what they accomplished on Saturday night with Seth Rollins' cash-in. That said, keep an eye on the TLC Six-Pack Tag Team Match. The number of athletes combined with the stipulations has my expectations freakishly high for this one. I'm hoping Nathan Frazer, nor anyone he's in a spot with, gets injured. Frazer is a bullet when he's in the ring, and sometimes I worry he's moving a little too fast. It's happened before. Hopefully, he has it all under control and his brilliance will shine through. I'm also fired up for Naomi's title defense against IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley. Naomi is on a run that is similar to what Liv Morgan experienced in 2024, when she was my Female WWE Superstar of the Year. If Naomi can keep the title through the next two PLEs and continues to do the character work that she's done recently, she'll have the spot on lock. Lastly, my eyes are wide open for the Steel Cage Match between Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa. The latter has found a way to re-invent himself with some humor, and he now has another faction. I could see either person going over, but it could be time to elevate Jacob into the premier title picture. Yadadamean? Be on the lookout for a post-PLE awards piece.

Miami Dolphins sign OL Germain Ifedi with starter Austin Jackson out several weeks with injury

Dolphins starting offensive tackle Austin Jackson will miss several weeks with a leg injury after being stepped on at practice but is expected to return by Miami's season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7. Coach Mike McDaniel said the injury isn't related to the knee injury that sidelined Jackson for the final eight games in 2024. "He got the injury playing football," McDaniel said Sunday. "Got stepped on. Has nothing to do with anything but that. With Austin, the bottom line for me where he's at — out of all the guys, I would say — he had some time off, he knocked some rust off, he got back and in my opinion exceeded where he was playing before, so we're fortunate that timetable doesn't seen to be into the regular season." With the injury, the Dolphins signed veteran offensive lineman Germain Ifedi on Sunday. Ifedi, who has played at guard and tackle, has 90 starts with Cleveland, Chicago and Seattle. The team also waived quarterback Brett Gabbert and activated safety Ifeatu Melifonwu off the non-football injury list. Melifonwu has missed the start of training camp, but will be a needed addition to the Dolphins secondary, which has had cornerback Kader Kohou (season-ending knee injury) and safety Ashtyn Davis (leg) go down in the first few weeks of practice. In other injury news, Jaelan Phillips, who missed most of the past two seasons with separate Achilles tendon and ACL injuries, suffered a bruise to one of his legs during practice, but McDaniel said the linebacker is only expected to miss a couple of days as the swelling goes down.
