Comebacking Senator Kiko takes oath before SC Justice Leonen
Senator-elect Francis Pangilinan, who won his fourth Senate six-year term in the May 2025 polls, took his oath before Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen on Wednesday.
In a statement, Pangilinan said he was thankful for his hard fought poll victory which is also a reminder for him to continue to always stand for the benefit of Filipinos.
'Lubos ang pasasalamat natin sa Diyos, sa taumbayan, at sa lahat ng tumaya at kumilos para sa tagumpay ng kampanyang ito. Ang panunumpang ito ay hindi lamang simbolo ng tagumpay. Isa itong paalala ng tungkuling dapat gampanan: makinig, maglingkod, at manindigan para sa bawat Pilipinong nangangarap ng mas maayos na bukas,' Pangilinan, a lawyer, said.
(I am thankful to the Lord, my countrymen and to those who took part in this victorious campaign. This oath not only symbolizes victory. This serves as a reminder of the tasks ahead — listen, serve and stand firm for every Filipino who is dreaming of a better tomorrow.)
'Hindi madali ang landas patungo rito, pero sa awa ng Diyos at sa lakas ng taumbayan, ang imposible ay naging posible. Maraming salamat sa tiwala. Para sa pagkain, para sa pagkakaisa, para sa Pilipino,' he added.
(The road going here was not easy, but with the grace of God and the strength of our countrymen, the impossible became possible. Thank you for the trust. For food, for unity for the Filipino.)

Youth group calls on Chiz to step down from Senate impeachment court
Youth group Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan (SPARK) called on Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero to step down as a senate-judge and the presiding officer at Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial. According to a statement on Wednesday, SPARK said they placed posters on Taft Avenue in Manila and gave out flyers blasting Escudero's 'dereliction of his constitutional duty' as Senate president. 'By allowing his fellow senators to propose and carry motions that whisk Sara Duterte away from justice, Escudero has made a mockery of the constitution and the innate right of the Filipino people to hold officials to account,' said SPARK secretary general Patricia Racca. 'Instead of doing the job for which he was elected, Escudero has the gall to enable attempts to delay the Senate from fulfilling its duty as an impeachment court, and even argued that it is an unaccountable court with no limits in the decisions it can make,' she added. SPARK stated that the impeachment case will not proceed unless Escudero steps down from his current responsibilities, following his 'fail[ure] to fulfill his mandate as presiding officer' when the articles of impeachment were sent back to the House. 'Escudero's actions as presiding officer of the impeachment court may even be deemed impeachable should it be properly investigated. However, it is already clear to us now that his actions speak to him presiding over a kangaroo court convened to the benefit of the Vice President herself,' Racca said. Comelec continues preparations for BARMM polls
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Wednesday that it will continue with the preparations for the first-ever Bangsamoro parliamentary elections amid the pending decision on the reallocation of seven seats assigned to Sulu. Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia said the poll body wrote to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Senate President Chiz Escudero, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, and the Senate and House committees on electoral reforms to inform them that they are preparing for the Bangsamoro polls with 73 parliamentary seats. 'Walang kaduda-duda tuloy na tuloy ang Bangsamoro parliamentary elections bagamat ang pinaghahandaan natin muna sa kasalukuyan ay ang 73 parliamentary seats kasi ang pito ay di pa namin alam ang final na sasabihin ng parliament,' Garcia said. (The BARMM polls will proceed but in the meantime, we're preparing for only 73 seats. We have yet to learn the decision on the seven vacated seats.) 'Baka kasi kapusin kami ng oras sa paghahanda dahil ito ay automated elections,' he said. (We're preparing now because we may not have enough time since this is an automated election.) The Bangsamoro polls was reset from May 12 to October 13, 2025 after Marcos signed into law the measure postponing the elections in February. The suspension came months after the Supreme Court (SC), in September 2024, upheld the validity of the Bangsamoro Organic Law but declared that Sulu was not part of BARMM. The Court denied motions seeking the reversal of the decision in November 2024. The SC ruling necessitated the redistribution of the seven vacated seats originally allocated to Sulu under the Bangsamoro Electoral Code. 'Nakailang sulat tayo pero wala pa tayong natanggap sa kanila pero may mga pag-convey ng mensahe na mukhang kakayanin nila kundi last week ng June, first week ng July yung naturang batas na ating inaasahan,' said Garcia. (We already wrote to them but have yet to receive a response. However, we were told that the resolution may be issued by the last week of June or the first week of July.) The public officials are in Israel for a study visit at the invitation of the Israeli government. The House of Representatives said no incumbent lawmaker is stranded in Israel.
