Denver Nuggets fire Coach and GM just before the NBA playoffs
For The Hoops crew debates whether the Denver Nuggets are in panic mode ahead the playoffs after firing head coach Mike Malone and GM Calvin Booth.
Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young was ejected in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night's play-in game against the Orlando Magic after he picked up two technical fouls in quick succession.
The game was essentially out of reach when Young received his first tech after he made an impressive floater with 4:48 to go in the fourth quarter, cutting the Hawks' deficit to 20 points.
He quickly fired the ball toward crew chief James Williams, who apparently didn't take kindly to the move. He T'd Young up immediately. Williams then bounced the ball down the court toward the Magic's end, but Young stepped in and lightly knocked the ball out of bounds with his feet then kept it away from another ref. He received a second technical foul for the act, drawing an automatic ejection.
The Hawks lost 120-95 and will have to defeat the winner of Wednesday's Heat-Bulls game to make the playoffs as the No. 8 seed. That game will take place in Atlanta on Friday.
The Magic secured the No. 7 seed in the East with the win and will face the No. 2 seed Boston Celtics in the first round.
Why Trae Young was ejected
Per the pool report, Williams said Young received his first technical foul for "throwing the ball at a game official."
Williams said Young received his second technical foul "for kicking the ball away and making a mockery of the game as we were attempting to shoot the free throw for the first technical foul."
Trae Young Play-In Tournament stats
Young finished with a team-high 28 points on 8-for-21 shooting, including a 1-for-5 mark from 3. He did hit 11 of his 12 free throws and added six assists.

Ex-Celtics Player Reacts to Major Russell Westbrook News

Ex-Celtics Player Reacts to Major Russell Westbrook News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Nine-time NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook just completed his 17th season and first with the Denver Nuggets. Now 36 years old, Westbrook is no longer the player he was during his prime with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but is still coming off a strong season. Advertisement In 75 games (36 starts) this season, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists on 44.9% from the field. While he played through a fractured hand in the postseason, Westbrook was integral in Denver's seven-game first round victory over the LA Clippers in which he averaged 13.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.3 steals. Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook (4)© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Owning a $3.5 million option for the 2025-26 NBA season, Westbrook has reportedly declined that option and will enter free agency (via ESPN). This does not mean Westbrook will leave the Nuggets, but it does give him the opportunity to test free agency. Following Westbrook's major contract move, NBA legend Stephen Marbury shared his thoughts with a one-word message. Advertisement "Good," he commented on ESPN's Instagram post. NBA legend Stephen Marbury makes an Instagram / Instagram After a five-year run with the New York Knicks, Marbury spent the final season of his 13-year NBA career with the Boston Celtics. In that season (2008-09), he appeared in 23 games (four starts) and averaged 3.8 points. While this one-word message from Marbury did not come with much context, it seems he feels Westbrook is worth more than the $3.5 million he turned down. A now expired Instagram story from Marbury suggested this, as he stated Westbrook is worth more money than he was set to make in Denver. Desmond Bane trade grades for Magic-Grizzlies blockbuster

The post Desmond Bane trade grades for Magic-Grizzlies blockbuster appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Memphis Grizzlies and the Orlando Magic shocked the NBA world on Sunday morning, pulling off the first blockbuster trade of the NBA offseason. Desmond Bane is headed to Orlando in exchange for four unprotected first-round picks, a pick swap, Cole Anthony and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Advertisement This move comes on the heels of disappointing first round playoff losses for both teams, and it addresses glaring needs for both teams. The Magic needed another perimeter shooter and scorer to go along with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, and now they have that in Bane. On the other side, the Grizzlies needed to shake something up in an attempt to go backwards to get some more room to take a leap next year. The core of Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Bane seemed to have hit its ceiling, and now the Grizzlies have some breathing room to make a big roster pivot. How did each team make out in the deal? Here are grades for both teams for this Father's Day blockbuster. Magic get more star power, much-needed shooter A deal like this for Orlando feels like it needs to be discussed in two parts. Advertisement First, there is the addition of Bane, which looks like a home run. He is one of the elite perimeter shooters in the NBA and can work both on and off the ball. Bane can shoot off the catch and on the move and will give Orlando some immediate artillery on the perimeter. Bane can also handle the ball at times and initiate the offense, taking some burden off of Banchero and Wagner. With this extra ball handler, the Magic can use Banchero down low to attack mismatches, and they now have a true perimeter threat to deploy with him in the two-man game. Bane and Banchero are a great fit together on paper and it will be fascinating to see how they work together next season and beyond. Wagner's playmaking should also help set Bane up as an off-ball scorer, a role that he thrived in playing alongside Morant over the last few seasons. The Magic now have a lethal starting core of Banchero, Bane, Wagner and Jalen Suggs, which should immediately help them take a step forward next season. On the other side, the price of the trade has to bring the grade down a bit. The Magic gave up four unprotected first-round picks in this deal. Four!! Those include the No. 16 pick this year in a draft rich with potential role players. Crucially, it also included the Phoenix Suns' unprotected pick in 2026. Advertisement With the Suns coming off of a nightmare season and steamrolling toward a breakup with Kevin Durant, there is a chance that next season could go very poorly as well. That pick could end up being a valuable asset in the lottery in a 2026 NBA Draft that is expected to be full of talent. Giving up Cole Anthony and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as a salary match isn't as big of a deal considering what Bane brings on the court, but what happens if this core tops out short of a title? The Magic now don't have many avenues to pivot. This trade is just as much a bet on Banchero becoming a true superstar as it is on Bane lifting the Magic in the present and the future. While that could very well pay off, it's worth questioning whether Bane is the level of player that warrants a gamble this expensive. Grade: B- Grizzlies ready to build around Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. Dale Zanine-Imagn Images The Grizzlies clearly had to pivot after getting swept in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder this season. They already made a big move to fire head coach Taylor Jenkins near the end of the regular season, and now they have made their big move to shake up the team. Advertisement It doesn't come as much of a surprise that Bane was moved. Morant is a beloved athlete in Memphis and Jackson has flashed so much two-way upside over the last few years, which left the TCU product as the odd man out. Now, the Grizzlies have plenty of flexibility to build around their two big-money stars. They get an extra draft pick this season to help supplement Morant and Jackson, and the Suns pick in 2026 could end up being very valuable as discussed above. Caldwell-Pope is on a bad contract and has a player option at the end of next season, but he could be moved next offseason on an expiring deal. He underperformed last season, but there is a chance that he could rebound in a better offensive ecosystem in Memphis. Anthony is on a team-friendly contract and has a club option after next season, so the Grizzlies have some control there. This opens up a lot of room for the Grizzlies to make a big move down the line, or to use the draft assets that they just brought in to make another swing this offseason. Kevin Durant, anyone? Why OKC Thunder legend Russell Westbrook's career deserves more praise than ire

LIVE UPDATES: Follow The Oklahoman's live coverage of Thunder vs. Pacers in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Another NBA offseason, another Russell Westbrook decision coming up. It's felt like ever since the Oklahoma City Thunder traded him away, Westbrook has been on the move, bouncing from one team to another in hopes of winning a championship. Advertisement He'll bounce again this summer after reportedly declining his player option with the Denver Nuggets. Westbrook will find himself on the free agent market yet again. There's also a real possibility that we might make it to the end of this offseason and Russ might still be a free agent, despite having a few bright moments with the Nuggets this season. Regardless of what Westbrook's future in the NBA might be, I thought it'd be nice to take a bit of time here to heap a bit of praise and appreciation his way. Let's be honest — the last few years of Westbrook's career haven't been the greatest reflection on him. Things haven't ended on a positive note with his last three teams. The Lakers banished him to Utah before the Clippers saved him. LAC picked him up and signed him to a long-term deal before, once again, deciding to banish him to Utah after a disastrous playoff run. Now, here we are, and before the Nuggets could banish him to Utah again, Westbrook decided to opt out and go elsewhere. REQUIRED READING: Thunder must impose identity for 48 minutes in NBA Finals, but can OKC do it vs. Pacers? We don't know where "elsewhere" will be at this point. There's a real chance that "elsewhere" doesn't actually exist this time — teams might just decide not to touch him. If that were to be the case, it'd be heartbreaking to see a legend like Russ go out like this. Advertisement But make no mistake about it: Regardless how Westbrook's career might end, he'll leave the NBA in a much better place than it was when he first entered it. Westbrook is one of the best point guards we've ever seen. For his career, he's averaged 21.2 points, 8.0 assists and 7.0 rebounds per game. The only other players to pull that off are Oscar Robertson and Luka Doncic, per Stat Muse, and Doncic obviously hasn't played nearly as long as the other two players on that list. Westbrook is also the NBA's triple-double king. His 203 are the most in the league's history by a wide margin. Nikola Jokic — another future Hall of Famer — will likely catch him eventually. But, even if that happens, there's nearly a foot of difference between Jokic and Westbrook. The accomplishment of having over 200 triple-doubles can't be overlooked. The story of Russell Westbrook cannot be told without talking about his playoff failures. After going to the NBA Finals in 2012 with Kevin Durant and James Harden, Westbrook never returned. Once Durant left the Thunder, he'd never gone back to another Western Conference Finals. He could never quite lead his own team to the promised land. And, once his powers began to fade, he never could quite fit perfectly into a bit role that his teams needed him to. Advertisement But that's all part of the Russell Westbrook experience, man. The dude plays one way, for better or worse. Lately, it's been for the worse. But that doesn't erase the accomplishments he's stacked playing his way to this point. He's one of the few players in league history to win an MVP. You can't discount that. Say what you want about Westbrook. Bring up all of his flaws. But, once you're done with all that, make sure you call him a future first-ballot Hall of Famer. Because that's exactly what he is. CARLSON: NBA Finals being altered by 'self-made guys' Alex Caruso, T.J. McConnell On the move again We all knew Kevin Durant was getting traded, but I didn't expect things to materialize this quickly. The NBA season isn't even over yet and it sounds like the Suns are moving Durant next week. Advertisement Here's Bryan Kalbrosky with more: "While some speculated that Durant could get moved during the 2025 NBA Draft, it appears that a transaction could potentially come even earlier than that. Just ask ESPN's Shams Charania, who appeared on The Pat McAfee Show before Game 4 of the NBA Finals." The Timberwolves, Heat and Rockets seem to be the main KD suitors at this point, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Talking heads around NBA media are already putting together speculative trade packages for this. If I'm being honest, I don't think any of this is a good look. It's already bad enough that the league didn't go out of its way to make the NBA Finals feel like the grandest stage of the NBA's season. Now, we've trade talk about a player who didn't even play for a playoff team this season overshadowing a pivotal Game 4 on Friday night. That's not a good look and something the NBA should think about nipping in the bud. More: Thunder-Pacers NBA Finals a showcase for role players, but do they play better at home?
