"Fibermaxxing" is trending, but don't overdo it
On TikTok, users are eating a ton of dietary fiber, but making it sound cool: They're " fibermaxxing." Why it matters: Most Americans fall short of their daily fiber needs, so a viral push to increase intake could help close the gap. That said, "you can get too much of a good thing," says registered dietitian nutritionist Janet Helm. What's happening: Content creators are suggesting ways to add fibrous foods like beans and chia seeds to meals, in order to be fuller, more regular and manage weight. State of play: " Fiber is beginning to have a moment," say Sherry Frey, VP of total wellness at consumer intelligence firm NielsenIQ. Along with being good for your bowels, blood sugar and heart — fiber lowers the risk of colorectal cancer, a disease that's seeing more early-stage diagnoses. And it's the latest topic in the gut health conversation, popular among wellness influencers and GLP-1 users changing their diets. (See also: protein and probiotics.) By the numbers: Supplements and powders containing fiber are an $8.8 billion industry, up more than 15% today compared to two years ago, according to NielsenIQ. Yes, but: "Where the trend has gone too far for me" is when people are consuming more than the recommended 25 to 38 grams for adults, Helm says. Eating too much too fast could cause bloat, gas and diarrhea, she says. To healthfully introduce more fiber into your life, start slowly, stay hydrated and look for both soluble and insoluble fiber sources in whole foods.

Do Phones Really Wreck Kids' Lives?
I am addicted! To my phone. I check an email and before I realize it, I'm watching TikTok videos: lions fight hyenas, military dads reunite with kids, athletes do amazing things. I look up, and an hour has passed. I've wasted time, ignored my family and friends, and accomplished nothing. But who cares? I'm old. I've already achieved what I'm likely to achieve. Still, what about kids? "Attention spans are declining," says psychologist Jonathan Haidt. "Levels of anxiety, depression, self-harm were pretty stable…all of a sudden, the rates go way up, especially for girls." His bestselling book (on bestseller lists for more than a year!) blames smartphones. "Once they get a smartphone…time with friends plunges. One of the best things you can do as a kid is hang out with friends, joke around, have adventures. If your kids went through puberty on a smartphone with social media, they came out different than human beings before that." My son, Max, once worked for social media companies. Now he makes his living speaking to students about how phones hook them. He compares smartphones to casino slot machines. "All the things we love about social media, those are the reward in the slot machine…we get that 'hit' once in a while….That's there to keep us scrolling for hours." Haidt agrees, calling smartphones a "gambling machine." They say some apps are worse than others. "Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok. Those really shatter attention spans. In terms of exposure to things that are really dangerous, Snap is the worst," says Haidt. "In terms of destroying your ability to pay attention, TikTok is the worst. In terms of destroying a teenage girl's sense of confidence, self-esteem, body image, Instagram is the worst." He says social media affects boys and girls differently. "Check in on the kids at age 14, girls are doing worse. They're more depressed and anxious, more messed up." But a few years later, he says, "Girls are more likely to have gone to college, gotten a job, and moved out of their parents' home. Boys are more likely to still be in their parents' basement playing video games. They never grew up. Real life is incredibly boring compared to a video game or porn." Teachers say phone addiction makes it harder to teach. "When you and I were in school," says Haidt, "suppose they let you take your TV into class. You couldn't possibly learn." These are big problems, but I'm a skeptic. Do phones really wreck kids' lives? We don't know that, say researchers like psychologist Chris Ferguson. "Correlation does not equal causation." "But teen depression is skyrocketing," I push back, "up 145 percent for girls since 2010!" "Teen suicide was actually very high in the early 1990s," he replies, "then it decreased…way before social media….Dr. Haidt has cherry-picked a lot of data and presented only the data that support his narrative." "I am not cherry-picking!" Haidt replies. "I'm the only one in this debate who has picked all of the cherries and laid them out on a blanket." He does lay out alternative possibilities, like teen marijuana use and the decline of marriage. "My theory is the only plausible one out there," he says. "No one's even proposed one that will work across so many countries. When you ask people to get off of social media for more than a week, their levels of depression, anxiety, go down." His book suggests that parents ban phones until high school. I push back. Kids will complain, "All my friends have one!" "But what if it was only most of your friends?" he replies. "Then it's much easier." He wants schools to ban phones, and many have. I ask Ferguson, "What's the cost of banning it in schools?" "Unintended negative consequences," he replies. "Are we suspending kids for cellphone use? A lot of schools are, and that can cause real harm to the kids." Haidt insists, "When schools ban phones, the results are overwhelmingly positive….Kids know that life would be better if they didn't spend five or six hours a day on social media. They know that, but they can't help it." COPYRIGHT 2025 BY JFS PRODUCTIONS INC. The post Do Phones Really Wreck Kids' Lives? appeared first on Solve the daily Crossword

14-Year-Old Labrador With Dementia Touches Hearts With Daily Routine
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A dog owner has shared a heartbreaking video documenting a day in the life of her senior canine with dementia, as she told Newsweek she hopes to raise awareness about the realities of the condition. We have all seen various versions of 'day in the life' videos on social media, but dog owner Tammie Tuttle, 57, decided to offer a new take on this trend. She posted a video on TikTok (@tammieandthedogs) highlighting the daily routine of her 14-year-old Labrador mix, Bailey, who has dementia and arthritis. While Bailey is still her loving dog in so many ways, Tuttle, of Kentucky, told Newsweek that getting older "has changed her." She was never the most-energetic pup; even when she was younger, she was quite docile. Nonetheless, Bailey loved chasing toys and digging holes outside in her younger years. Sadly, those days are long gone as Bailey lives a much-slower lifestyle now, Tuttle said. From left: Bailey paces in her home; and lays on the floor. From left: Bailey paces in her home; and lays on the floor. @tammieandthedogs / TikTok "We live out in the country, and she used to be able to run and roam our property with my husband or I just watching," Tuttle said. "That's no longer the case, and no more chasing sticks or digging holes. "We have to stay by her side and guide her in the direction she needs to go. If we put a stick in front of her, she will brighten up a little and grab it. Bedtime has also become a routine in that we have to make sure she is on her bed and asleep before we go to bed," Tuttle added. The video showing Bailey's daily routine shows her having a nap in the morning before pacing aimlessly in the afternoon. This is a sign that Tuttle noticed earlier this year, and is common with dog dementia. Experts at PetMD say that canine dementia can also lead to barking or howling at seemingly nothing, increased anxiety, house soiling, forgetting tricks or cues they previously knew, and getting lost in the house. Sometimes, Bailey walks around in circles, Tuttle added, while, other times, she wanders into different rooms "like she's searching for something." Tuttle said that it typically happens for a couple of hours each afternoon. "She may also pace in the evening, but, when I get home from work, I will sit outside, and she will come and relax. We also get out and take her for a walk to distract her from pacing, and that helps a lot too," Tuttle said. "She's more sensitive to loud noises and will often make her pacing and panting worsen. Thunderstorms, the grandkids jumping around or even our other two dogs play will cause her to pace even more." From her mealtimes, bedtimes, and winding down, Tuttle and her husband keep a very structured routine to help Bailey. On the occasions when Bailey becomes stressed, Tuttle will get her to lie down, give her pets and massages, and sometimes even sing to her. PetMD experts say that dogs who experience cognitive dysfunction have a buildup of protein known as beta-amyloid that forms plaques on the brain. This slows the signals sent between the brain cells, interfering with memory, learning, and spatial awareness as a result. There is no cure for dogs with dementia, but environmental modifications can minimize the complications. If the canine wanders around, night lights can reduce their confusion in the dark, and keeping them in a small room that is difficult to get lost in may also help. Maintaining a regular schedule is recommended, and increasing their activity during the day can allow them to quiet their mind at night. After Tuttle shared the "day in the life with dog dementia" on TikTok, it has gone viral with over 804,000 views and more than 34,200 likes at the time of writing. Alongside the video, the caption adds: "She's our girl and it's so hard watching her." The online response has been largely sympathetic, as many fellow dog owners have reached out to share their similar experiences. Tuttle will continue to post videos of Bailey in the hopes of increasing awareness and helping others. Tuttle said: "The love and support has been overwhelming, and the senior dog community is absolutely amazing. I've had a huge amount of comments from people who are going through the same thing with their senior dog." The video of Bailey touched plenty of hearts, leading to more than 860 comments on TikTok so far. One comment reads: "She is so lucky to have you." Another TikTok user wrote: "Doggy Dementia is so painful to watch your babies go through." A third person added: "My heart just hurts for you. I'm so sorry you have to see her go through this."
