Govt to fast-track first national sepak takraw academy

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to expedite the establishment of Malaysia's first national sepak takraw academy, with completion targeted by the end of this year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision reflects the government's commitment to strengthening traditional sports and nurturing homegrown talent to compete at the highest levels. "We will make the sepak takraw academy a reality in this country. "I believe sepak takraw, like football, is a sport that makes us proud, not just nationally but also regionally and globally. "The academy can be completed before the end of this year because the Madani government is a government that works hard," he said in his speech at the launch of National Youth Day here today. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. Anwar said Yeoh had requested an allocation of RM6 million for the project, which would serve as a platform to develop young athletes and elevate the sport to greater heights. He also acknowledged the growing interest among Malaysian youth in both traditional and modern recreational activities, saying these pursuits should be supported as long as they remain within cultural values and norms. "This is part of our cultural heritage — from cities to kampungs (villages), from youth who dance for leisure to those who play futsal and football. "As long as it stays within the boundaries of proper conduct, we support it," he said. He said the unity government would continue prioritising youth empowerment through sports, the arts, and positive community engagement, in line with the Madani vision. Anwar also announced that the government has agreed to allocate RM4 million to the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) to strengthen youth development. He said the decision followed a request by the council's president, Mohd Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid. "This is an increase of RM1 million from last year's allocation, which saw an additional RM3 million channelled to the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Vietnam approves 90% tax on beer, strong alcohol by 2031

Nearly 41,000 Vietnamese people die each year due to alcohol consumption. (EPA Images pic) HANOI : Vietnam's lawmakers approved raising the tax on beer and strong alcoholic beverages today to 90% by 2031 from the current 65%, state media said. The tax rate on liquor with more than 20% alcohol content and all beers will rise five percentage points yearly from 2027 before reaching 90% in 2031 under the National Assembly's new legislation. Levies will also increase by five percentage points annually for other drinks with alcohol content below 20%, which are currently subject to a 35% tax, reaching 60% by 2031. 'The gradual annual tax increase is not intended to change behaviour but rather to help consumers adapt more easily,' Hoang Van Cuong, a member of parliament, told the assembly in March. Lawmakers also approved a new levy of 8% on beverages containing more than 5g of sugar per 100ml, taking effect in 2027 and increasing to 10% in 2028. Beer sales in Vietnam took a hit following the introduction of a strict zero-alcohol rule for drivers in 2019. However, Dan Martin, an international business advisor at Dezan Shira & Associates, said Vietnam's drinking culture has roots 'that run far too deep to be uprooted by policy alone'. 'Rather than spelling doom for the beer market, these measures represent more of a speed bump than a roadblock,' he told AFP. Martin said that behavioural shifts were already underway, with more Vietnamese people consuming alcohol at home rather than at traditional venues such as bars. The trend 'isn't just consumers reacting to new rules', he said. Vietnam ranked seventh globally in beer consumption in 2022, according to a report by Kirin Holdings, a Japanese beer company. Nearly 41,000 Vietnamese people die each year due to alcohol consumption, according to the health ministry.

This was highlighted by Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Brunei Darussalam Mikhail Baranov in his remarks at the Russian National Day reception held at the Songket Ballroom Wednesday night. 'Our bilateral relations with Brunei Darussalam are developing in a spirit of mutual respect and constructive engagement,' said the ambassador. 'In July 2024, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Brunei's Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Erywan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Mohd Yusof, on the sidelines of Asean-related events, reaffirming our shared interest in strengthening political dialogue.' Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Mohd Isham Jaafar was present as the guest of honour, representing the Brunei Government. Also in attendance were members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, and invited guests from various sectors. The event commenced with the national anthems of Brunei Darussalam and the Russian Federation, followed by welcoming remarks from Ambassador Baranov. He noted that a recent visit by a Deputy Minister from the Prime Minister's Office to Moscow for the 13th Meeting of Senior Security Officials included a series of productive bilateral discussions, further strengthening cooperation in the field of security. 'Russia and Brunei also maintain close coordination within international institutions, where both countries often share similar views on global challenges and the principles that should govern international relations,' said the ambassador. 'I am confident that our partnership will continue to expand across many areas — from energy and education to cultural exchange and regional security — for the benefit of our peoples and in the interest of peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.' The evening concluded with a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony by the ambassador and the guest of honour to mark the celebration of Russia Day. The reception reflected the strong spirit of friendship between Brunei Darussalam and Russia and Russia's commitment to further deepening cooperation across multiple sectors for mutual benefit and global peace. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
