Japan's Pizza Studio Tamaki opens in Singapore in June

SINGAPORE – Tokyo Neapolitan pizza brand Pizza Studio Tamaki will be opening a restaurant in Tanjong Pagar on June 10.
It is a partnership between the brand and JAP Dining Concepts, which runs Yappari Steak in VivoCity, an Okinawan-style steakhouse.
PST Singapore will have 60 seats. The pizza will be cooked in a wood-fired oven from oven-maker Stefano Ferrara Forni in Bologna. The pies are priced from $22 to $34 each.
Started by pizzaiolo Tsubasa Tamaki, PST, as fans call it, serves Tokyo Neapolitan-style pizza. The pies have a light and chewy crust with a puffy rim and thin centre, made with dough using Japanese and American flour that is fermented for 30 hours.

The brand has two restaurants in Tokyo – in Roppongi and Higashiazabu – and one in Okinawa. Its first overseas outpost opened in Bangkok in January. Famous fans include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who visited the Roppongi restaurant in 2022.
Chef Tamaki had worked at two famous pizza restaurants in Tokyo – Savoy and Strada – before launching Pizza Studio Tamaki in 2017. He also studied under famous pizzaiolo Susumu Kakinuma of Seirinkan, one of the first Neapolitan-style pizza restaurants in Tokyo.

His pizzas come with either a tomato or cheese base. Red sauce pie options include Tamaki, topped with cherry tomatoes and smoked mozzarella; Margherita, topped with buffalo mozzarella; Romana, with olives, anchovies and Aomori garlic, among other toppings; and Diavola, topped with housemade pork sausage, olives and basil.
Cheese-base pizzas include Nduja, topped with spicy Calabrian sausage; 5 Formaggi, with five cheeses including gorgonzola; and Oltrana, topped with mozzarella, mascarpone, Pecorino Romano and cherry tomatoes.
The Singapore restaurant will be headed by chef Ryosuke Tanahara, who worked with chef Tamaki for three years.
PST Singapore opens on June 10 at 38 Tanjong Pagar Road, from 11am to 3pm, 5 to 11pm (weekdays), and 11am to 3pm, 5pm to midnight (weekends). Go to @pst.singapore (Instagram) for more information.

Japan's exports log biggest drop in 4 years as US tariff impacts intensify

[TOKYO] Japan's exports posted the biggest monthly drop in about four years in July, government data showed on Wednesday (Aug 20), as the impact of US tariffs intensified, raising concerns about the outlook for the export-reliant economy. Total exports from the world's fourth-largest economy dropped 2.6 per cent year on year in July in value terms, the biggest monthly drop since February 2021, when exports fell 4.5 per cent. It was larger than a median market forecast for a 2.1 per cent decrease and marks a third straight month of decline after a 0.5 per cent drop in June. Despite the plunge in the value of exports, shipment volumes have so far held up as Japanese exporters have avoided major price hikes, said Takeshi Minami, chief economist at Norinchukin Research Institute. 'But they would eventually have to pass on costs to US consumers and that would further hamper sales in the coming months,' he said. Exports to the US in July fell 10.1 per cent from a year earlier, with automobiles slumping 28.4 per cent and automotive components down 17.4 per cent. Sign Up Sign Up However, automobile exports fell just 3.2 per cent in volume terms, suggesting Japanese automakers' price cuts and efforts to absorb additional tariffs have partly shielded shipments. The US imposed 25 per cent tariffs on automobiles and auto parts in April and threatened 25 per cent levies on most of Japan's other goods. It later struck a trade deal on Jul 23 that lowered tariffs to 15 per cent in exchange for a US-bound US$550 billion Japanese investment package. The agreed tariff rate on automobiles, Japan's largest export sector, is still far higher than the original 2.5 per cent, exerting pressure on major automakers and parts suppliers. Exports to other regions were also weak. Those to China were down 3.5 per cent, the data showed. Total imports in July dropped 7.5 per cent from a year earlier, compared with market forecasts for a 10.4 per cent fall. As a result, Japan ran a deficit of 117.5 billion yen (S$1 billion) in July, compared with a forecast of a 196.2 billion yen surplus. The outcome follows unexpectedly strong growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in the April-to-June quarter, separate data showed last week, fuelled by surprisingly resilient exports and capital expenditure. Economists said the strong exports growth in GDP data reflected differences in how the impact of price changes is factored in. Nevertheless, Norinchukin's Minami said that the Japanese economy has so far avoided the worst. 'As the tariff deal has at least reduced uncertainties, the Bank of Japan is likely to resume rate hikes as early as in October,' he said. REUTERS

Intel rescue will depend on Trump as investor — and pitchman

[WASHINGTON] A US government plan to take a stake in Intel would give the ailing chipmaker a powerful backer, even if a bigger challenge still lies ahead: finding enough paying customers. Wall Street analysts do not expect the money alone to turn around Intel's business, which has suffered from years of declining sales and the loss of market share. But there is a possibility that pressure from President Donald Trump will help the chipmaker line up more clients for its production arm – potentially justifying the cost of expanding domestic manufacturing. If the US ends up owning part of Intel, 'Trump kind of becomes your salesman,' said Dan Morgan, a senior portfolio manager at Synovus Trust who has covered the company since the 1990s. The president has this year secured trillions of US dollars' worth of pledges to invest in the US – even if some of those commitments are repackaged versions of existing plans. That includes a vow by Apple to spend US$600 billion on a domestic expansion. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), meanwhile, has pledged US$165 billion as part of a factory buildout in Arizona. This time around, the administration will need to pull off something with even longer odds: convincing sceptical prospective clients to use Intel for their manufacturing needs. The company has been trying to compete with TSMC in the so-called foundry business – manufacturing chips based on the designs of customers – but it has struggled to show it can match the industry leader's capabilities. 'Beside money, Intel needs customers,' Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said in a note to clients. 'Is it conceivable that as part of something like this the administration might 'encourage' customers to use Intel's capacity (either directly, or indirectly through tariff policy or other regulation)? Sign Up Sign Up SoftBank Group this week agreed to buy US$2 billion in Intel shares, raising the possibility that the Japanese conglomerate could use the company for chipmaking. Founder Masayoshi Son, who has forged a close relationship with Trump, has ambitions to develop AI chips that would compete with Nvidia. Investors cheered the idea, sending Intel shares up 7 per cent on Tuesday (Aug 19). The stock had rallied 23 per cent the previous week, when Bloomberg News first reported that the government was discussing the plan. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed this week that the government is discussing a plan to own part of Intel, casting the idea as a bid to convert Chips and Science Act grants into equity. The company had been poised to get about US$11 billion from that programme – initiated by a 2022 law signed by President Joe Biden – and the investment is expected to be roughly that same amount, people familiar with the deliberations have said. 'We need to make our own chips here,' Lutnick said. 'We cannot rely on Taiwan.' Intel, based in Santa Clara, California, declined to comment. It was a striking turnabout for Intel chief executive officer Tan Lip-Bu, whom Trump had criticised earlier this month. The US president had urged the executive to resign over his past ties to China, but Trump changed his stance after meeting Tan at the White House. It's an optimistic moment for a company plagued by upheaval and decline in recent years. Previous CEO Pat Gelsinger had bet that a factory expansion plan – centreed on an ambitious new facility in Ohio – would turn around Intel's fortunes. The aim was to transform Intel into a chip foundry and make semiconductors for outside clients, a growing business that turned TSMC into a trillion-US dollar company. The Chips Act money was meant to help make that vision come true. Biden and Gelsinger even held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Ohio site in 2022, promising 20,000 construction jobs and a fresh start for the domestic chip industry. But the economics of the plant don't work without big outside customers – especially because it's meant to feature cutting-edge technology that will be costly to adopt. Intel has repeatedly delayed the project, which isn't currently slated to be ready until the 2030s. Jay Goldberg, an analyst at Seaport Research Partners, estimates that it would take about US$20 billion for Intel to get its next-generation manufacturing technology online. Moreover, the government's cash-for-equity deal isn't necessarily a better arrangement than the original Chips Act grants, Rasgon said. 'Funding a buildout with no customers probably won't end well for shareholders, of whom the US government would be the largest under this situation,' he said. It also doesn't change Intel's standing in the technology industry. It has fallen behind in producing the kinds of chips most prized for AI tasks – an area now dominated by Nvidia. So-called hyperscalers – the largest data centre operators, like Alphabet's Google, which are now committing upwards of US$80 billion per year to buying new hardware – aren't going to settle for lesser chips because the government tells them to, Cowen analyst Joshua Buchalter said. It's not clear how the US investment fixes a problem that stems from a lack of competitiveness, he said. 'You can't force hyperscalers to use less performant processors or else you're inhibiting their competitiveness globally,' Buchalter said. TSMC is the go-to chip foundry for much of the tech industry, including Apple, Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Intel, though, has yet to prove it can keep pace with global chip designers and manufacturers again – let alone act as the linchpin for a revival of domestic production. 'Intel still has to deliver,' Morgan said. 'Will this stake really make a whole lot of difference?' BLOOMBERG

Schulz's most memorable creations, Charlie is the ultimate clueless kid, never able to kick a football, ace a test or approach his crush , the Little Red-Haired Girl . But in Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical, a new Peanuts animated special, Charlie scores a major triumph. Thinking not so much of himself but of his little sister Sally and of future generations, he devises a plan to save a beloved institution: the Peanuts gang's summer camp. The desire to preserve a cherished institution also inspired the creative team behind the production, the first new Peanuts television musical in more than 35 years. The last was Snoopy! The Musical from 1988. With this special, which is available on Apple TV+, the writers aim both to celebrate the legacy of Schulz, who died in 2000 – 2025 is the 75th anniversary of the comic strip – and to take the indelible Peanuts crew in a slightly different direction. 'The thought jumped in my mind – wouldn't it be exciting to see the characters, you know, actually sing and dance?' Craig Schulz said in a joint video interview with Bryan Schulz and Cornelius Uliano, his screenplay collaborators and fellow executive producers. Craig is Charles Schulz's son and Bryan is the cartoonist's grandson. The idea occurred to Craig Schulz while he was home watching movie musicals like Tick, Tick… Boom! (2021) and In The Heights (2021). He felt musical numbers would give this fresh Peanuts offering an extended life. 'You could tell the same story we told without making it be a musical,' Craig Schulz said. 'But when you inject the music aspect into it, it really makes it more enjoyable to watch it over and over and over again.' The Schulzes and Uliano, who have been collaborating for more than a decade on film and TV properties intended to introduce today's viewers to Charles Schulz's sly humour and often poignant wit, are also shifting the audience's focus from Snoopy, the Peanuts strip's spotlight-loving beagle, to its human characters. Although Snoopy plays a pivotal role in the plot – he pitches, naturally, a pup tent at the camp, which is called Cloverhill Ranch – he is not the main character. Geared as much towards nostalgic parents as it is at young viewers, A Summer Musical does not share screenwriters or a setting with Camp Snoopy, the Apple TV+ children's series that debuted in 2024. Instead, the 40-minute special, which is directed by Erik Wiese (Sonic Prime, 2022 to 2024; The Mighty B!, 2008 to 2011), explores the emotions of Sally, who arrives at camp for the first time and hates it (as a young Craig Schulz did) , and those of Charlie, who is embarking on his last summer session and adores the woods and the wild (as Bryan Schulz did) . Depicting Charlie as an experienced camper, the writers have avoided including the kind of 'downbeat Charlie Brown gag' found in many earlier Peanuts specials, Craig Schulz said . In their collaborations, 'we never kind of pull the rug out from under him', he added. Charlie's love of camp and Sally's loathing – a surprising Cloverhill resident finally wins her over to the place's charms – fuel the special's first two musical numbers. Jeff Morrow, a Peanuts productions veteran and this musical's main composer, worked with songwriters Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner to create Best Time Ever. It is an upbeat ode that begins with Charlie singing and builds to a powerful – and, to Sally, overpowering – full camp chorus. Their subsequent song for Sally, A Place Like This, details her every complaint. Both numbers mix pop with jazz, which has been the signature Peanuts sound ever since Vince Guaraldi composed the score in 1965 for A Charlie Brown Christmas, the first and much revered Peanuts special. The music takes on a different quality, however, after the campers learn of plans to shutter Cloverhill because of diminishing attendance. Singer-songwriter Ben Folds , the special's music supervisor, wrote three additional numbers, two of which are lyrical ballads. In the producers' own quest to maintain the Peanuts legacy, they have insisted on digital animation that matches Charles Schulz's drawings, and on casting adolescents and children for the young characters' voices, rather than adults who are trying to sound young. 'There're certain qualities in each voice and each character that we're looking for, and that all goes back to the original Christmas special,' Bryan Schulz said. 'That's kind of the template, the gold standard.' Not surprisingly, the producers have often encountered young people who are completely unfamiliar with the original Peanuts comic strip. Craig Schulz recalled that during a project years ago, none of the voice cast had ever read it. But by the end of filming, all the actors had delved into the history and become attached to the characters. He wants the musical's viewers to feel the same way. 'They discovered a whole world they never knew existed,' he said of the cast. 'That's what we always hope. Once you discover that world, it's hard to leave it.'
