Lyles, Richardson blaze through 100 heats at US Championships
With a ticket to the world championships in Tokyo on the line, Kenny Bednarek was the only man to dip under 10 seconds in the first round, posting 9.95.
Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson are guaranteed spots in the men's and women's 100 at the worlds in September thanks to their triumphs at Budapest in 2023.
Paris silver medallist Richardson clocked her season's best of 11.07 in the women's 100 preliminaries, with Jacious Sears leading the way with a 10.85 and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden third in 10.86.
"I was running that like a final," Lyles said after his heat. "I only have one round in the 100m (and) two rounds in the 200m. I'm in plenty of shape, you know, in terms of endurance and rest and recovery."
Richardson, competing in just her third race this year, said she was feeling good.
"It felt amazing. Being able to compete, feeling healthy, going out there and executing no matter what (and) just being the best athlete I can be...," the 25-year-old said.
"Just to run a qualifying round, show fitness and take the rest of the time to get ready for Tokyo."
DeAnna Price won the women's hammer throw with a throw of 78.53 metres, while Curtis Thompson won the men's javelin.
The meet runs from July 31 to August 3 at Hayward Field.

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa says sitting on Trump's sports council will be ‘an honor'
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has spoken of his pride at being named to Donald Trump's council on sports, fitness, and nutrition. Tagovailoa joins two other current NFL stars on the council, Nick Bosa and Harrison Butker, who have been backers of Trump's Maga movement. While Tagovailoa has not publicly expressed his support for the president, who once described NFL players who knelt for the national anthem as 'sons of bitches', he said he was happy to align himself with Trump. 'I think it's pretty cool – it's an honor, [to serve on the council]' Tagovailoa said on Wednesday. 'I don't know too much about it, but it's an honor.' Trump has revitalized the council under an executive order that will also being back the presidential fitness test for American children, which was phased out during the Obama administration. Tagovailoa said he did not know why he had been named to the council. When Trump announced the council's members he mispronounced Tagovailoa's name. On Wednesday. the quarterback laughed off the president's error. 'I don't think he's had the worst – I heard a couple worse at Alabama,' said Tagovailoa. 'It is what it is, I don't take that to heart.' Earlier this week, Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley said he had declined his invitation to sit on the council. 'A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council,' Barkley told reporters after Monday's Eagles practice session. 'So I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I am going to be super busy. Me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.' NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will also be a member of the council.

Pawol to become first woman to umpire in regular-season MLB game
NEW YORK, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Jen Pawol is set to become the first woman to be an umpire in a regular-season Major League Baseball game this weekend, working for the Atlanta Braves' three-game series at home against the Miami Marlins beginning on Saturday. She will work the bases in both games of Saturday's doubleheader and will be stationed behind home plate on Sunday, MLB said. Pawol, who has umpired in the minors previously, was the first woman to umpire in a Spring Training game for 17 years during a meeting between the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals in 2024. The 48-year-old New Jersey native played college softball and has been a minor league umpire since 2016. The barrier-breaking news comes 10 years after the National Football League hired its first full-time female official, Sarah Thomas, who would go on to become the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl in 2021. The NBA was the first of the "big four" men's professional leagues in North America to add women to its full-time officiating staff, hiring Violet Palmer and Dee Kantner in 1997.
