South African auto industry hit by job cuts and shutdowns

The South African automotive sector has been grappling with significant challenges, leading to the shutdowns of 12 companies and the loss of more than 4,000 jobs within a span of two years. This troubling development was highlighted by Trade Minister Parks Tau during an auto parts conference, as reported by Reuters. The nation, which has traditionally been a stronghold for automotive firms such as Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen, recorded sales of 515,850 locally manufactured cars in 2024. This figure falls substantially short of the South Africa Automotive Masterplan 2035's goal of 784,509 vehicles. A critical issue facing the industry is the high percentage of imported vehicles, which currently stands at 64%. Moreover, the localisation rate, which measures the extent of local assembly, labour, and components, remains stuck at around 39%, significantly below the desired 60% threshold. Tau noted that compounding the industry's woes are the US tariffs that have adversely affected South Africa's R28.7bn ($1.64bn) automotive exports. These tariffs pose a threat to jobs, particularly as some companies have lost contracts in the American market. In response to the tariffs, which were imposed by US President Donald Trump last week at a rate of 30%, South Africa submitted a revised offer for a trade deal with Washington this week. Despite months of negotiations, the two countries have yet to reach a satisfactory trade agreement, leaving South African exports to the US to face the highest tariff rate in sub-Saharan Africa. To address these challenges, the South African government has expanded its incentive scheme for local manufacturing to include electric vehicles (EVs) and related components, added the minister. Stellantis and China's Chery are considering setting up production in South Africa. In July 2025, Stellantis announced plans to expand its South African automotive market presence with the introduction of Leapmotor brand EVs. The first model, the C10 REEV, will be available at select Stellantis dealers starting in September, with more models anticipated to be released in 2026. The South African automotive industry is a critical employer in the country, with 115,000 individuals directly employed and more than 80,000 working in component manufacturing. Amazon Expands Same-Day Grocery Delivery to Steer Competition

Amazon's AMZN recent strategic expansion of its same-day grocery delivery service to more than 1,000 cities marks a transformative moment in the e-commerce giant's quest to dominate the $1.6 trillion U.S. grocery market. The company's ambitious plan to more than double this reach to 2,300 cities by year-end represents one of its most aggressive grocery pushes to date, fundamentally reshaping how Americans shop for their daily essentials. By integrating thousands of fresh perishable items, including produce, dairy, meat, and frozen foods, into its existing Same-Day Delivery infrastructure, Amazon has created a seamless shopping experience that allows customers to order groceries alongside electronics, books, and household items in a single expansion positions Amazon to capture a significantly larger share of the grocery market, building on its already impressive $100 billion in gross grocery and household essential sales in 2024. The service's competitive pricing structure, offering free delivery for Prime members on orders over $25, makes it an attractive alternative to traditional grocery shopping while maintaining the convenience that modern consumers company's investment in temperature-controlled fulfillment networks and six-point quality checks demonstrates its commitment to overcoming the historical challenges of online grocery delivery. This strategic move not only enhances the value proposition of Prime membership but also creates powerful network effects that could accelerate customer acquisition and retention. With perishables like strawberries and avocados already ranking among the top items in Same-Day Delivery carts, Amazon has successfully tapped into consumer demand for fresh grocery convenience. How Rivals Stack Up in the Same-Day Grocery Race While Amazon aggressively expands its same-day grocery footprint, major competitors Walmart WMT, Target TGT and Kroger KR have been developing their rapid delivery strategies to defend market share. Walmart, the nation's largest grocer, currently offers same-day delivery from approximately 4,700 stores nationwide through its Walmart+ membership program, maintaining its competitive edge through extensive physical infrastructure. The retailer has leveraged its vast store network to fulfill online orders, though Walmart's delivery fees and membership costs remain comparable to Amazon's pricing has positioned itself as a formidable competitor through its Shipt acquisition, offering same-day delivery from nearly all its 2,000 stores, with the retailer focusing on integrating grocery with its strong general merchandise the largest traditional supermarket chain, has taken a different approach by partnering with delivery platforms and investing heavily in automated fulfillment centers through its collaboration with Ocado. Kroger operates customer fulfillment centers in multiple states, though its geographic reach for same-day delivery remains more limited than Amazon's planned expansion. While Kroger's deep grocery expertise provides quality advantages, its delivery infrastructure development has progressed more gradually. Target's strength lies in its urban and suburban store density, enabling efficient last-mile delivery, though Target's grocery selection typically remains narrower than dedicated grocery Amazon races toward 2,300 cities, Walmart's established presence provides immediate competition, while Kroger and Target must accelerate their digital investments to maintain relevance in this rapidly evolving landscape. Amazon Just Gave Uber Stock Bad News. Should You Sell UBER Here?

Amazon's (AMZN) massive grocery expansion sent shockwaves through delivery stocks, with Uber (UBER) shares falling 1% after the announcement as the e-commerce giant cranked up competitive pressure on gig-economy platforms. Amazon announced same-day grocery delivery to over 1,000 cities, expanding to 2,300 locations by year-end, which Wedbush analysts called a "shot heard round the warehouse." The service integrates fresh groceries into Amazon's existing logistics network, allowing Prime members to order milk alongside electronics with free delivery on orders over $25. The expansion represents Amazon's most significant grocery push, addressing a category where it has "struggled historically" with perishables. Previously, Prime grocery orders required separate Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods deliveries with higher minimums and fees. Despite the competitive headwinds, Uber maintains its "Strong Buy" rating from analysts. The company's diversified platform extends beyond grocery delivery into ride-sharing, freight, and advertising, revenue streams that Amazon's grocery push doesn't directly threaten. Amazon's move validates the massive grocery delivery market opportunity, which remains fragmented with room for multiple players. Uber's established driver network, restaurant partnerships, and operational efficiency could help defend market share. Is Uber Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Uber delivered a record-breaking quarter in Q2, showcasing the resilience of its platform strategy amid intensifying competition. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted the company's unique competitive advantage: consumers using both mobility and delivery services generate 35% higher retention rates and 3x the gross bookings of single-service users. With fewer than 20% of consumers currently active across both platforms, Uber sees massive expansion potential. The appointment of Andrew McDonald as COO signals a focus on platform integration, with both mobility and delivery leaders now reporting to him. This structural change should accelerate cross-promotion efforts that leverage the company's 36 million Uber One members, who spend 3x more than non-members. Uber's autonomous vehicle (AV) partnerships expanded significantly, with new deals involving Baidu (BIDU), Lucid (LCID), Nuro, and Wayve complementing existing Waymo operations. Uber revealed that average Waymo vehicles achieve higher utilization than 99% of human drivers, validating the economic model. Management outlined three potential AV business models: merchant (predictable partner revenue), agency (revenue sharing), and asset ownership with software licensing. The $20 billion share buyback authorization demonstrates confidence in balancing AV investments with shareholder returns. Uber's "barbell strategy" showed strong momentum, with premium services exceeding $10 billion in gross bookings (up 35%) while Moto two-wheeler services reached $1.5 billion (up 40%). Its ability to capture both ends of the market spectrum provides multiple growth vectors while competitors typically focus on single segments. What is the Target Price for UBER Stock? Analysts tracking UBER stock forecast revenue to increase from $44 billion in 2024 to $81.6 billion in 2029. Comparatively, free cash flow (FCF) is forecast to expand from $6.9 billion to $16 billion in this period. Today, the stock trades at 18.5x forward FCF, which is reasonable. If it can maintain a similar multiple, it could gain over 60% over the next three years. Of the 47 analysts covering UBER stock, 33 recommend 'Strong Buy,' four recommend 'Moderate Buy,' and 10 recommend 'Hold.' The average price target is $107, above the current price of $91. While Amazon's grocery expansion creates near-term pressure, Uber's broader ecosystem and execution track record suggest investors shouldn't rush to sell. The delivery wars are intensifying, but Uber has proven resilient in competitive battles before. Indeed, UBER stock has already bounced back about 2% since Amazon's announcement earlier this week.
