Do Vegas Golden Knights already have a 1-0 lead on Edmonton Oilers?

Vancouver Sun05-05-2025
So, do the Edmonton Oilers save everyone the time and effort, spot the Vegas Golden Knights a 1-0 series lead and go straight to Game 2?
Article content
Article content
Or make it 2-0 and start the series back in Edmonton, where they begin one of their patented comebacks?
Article content
It's in the Oilers DNA to ease their way into a playoff series, starting slowly and finishing with a fury. Over the last 10 series dating back to the Western Conference Final run of 2022, they are just 2-8 in the opening game.
Article content
Article content
But, in the eight series in which they fell behind 1-0, they are a respectable 5-3, losing only to the eventual Stanley Cup champions in 2022 (Colorado), 2023 (Vegas) and 2024 (Florida).
Article content
Article content
Falling behind 3-0 to Florida cost them a Stanley Cup last year and falling behind 2-0 to Los Angeles this year left them one Quinton Byfield mental error from falling behind 3-1 and probably being eliminated in the first round.
Article content
So, once again, the goal heading into Round 2 is to set the tone instead of digging a hole.
Article content
'It's big,' said Leon Draisaitl. 'We can't find ourselves in a 2-0, or 3-0 hole again. And if you do you're going to try and climb your way our of it, of course, but it's big to start the series off well and find your game.'
Article content
The Oilers have started pushing back against the trend, going 2-2 in the opening game last year after losing seven in a row dating back to the pandemic-era sweeps by Chicago and Winnipeg in 2020 and 2021.
Article content
Article content
And this year's 0-2 deficit against Los Angeles, they say, can be written off to rust.
Article content
Article content
'Last series was a little different just with the transition from the regular season to the playoffs,' said Evander Kane, who hadn't played in nearly a year when the puck dropped against Los Angeles.
Article content
'No excuse, but a bit of a fact. We understand that getting down 2-0 isn't a recipe for success all the time, especially against a team like Vegas. It's important to go down there and get one, be ready for Game 1.'
Article content
Because their usual path is too much unnecessary stress.
Article content
'It's tough, when you get down 2-0, it can be mentally challenging,' said Kane. 'It's nice to put that behind us and get ready for Vegas.'
Article content
Draisaitl sees this team gaining strength with every game, so he expects the Oilers will look much different Tuesday in Las Vegas than they did a couple of weeks ago when they limped into Los Angeles.
Article content
'Especially the guys who haven't played in a while. We had a lot of guys in the first couple of games of the series who hadn't played in a long time. With every game, with every practice, with every day, those guys are going to get better and feel more comfortable and that's only to our advantage.'

The home of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning renamed Benchmark International Arena

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The home of the Tampa Bay Lightning has a new name, Benchmark International Arena, after the NHL team unveiled a multiyear agreement Wednesday with the mergers and acquisitions company. The change takes effect immediately. The building that opened in 1996 had been known as Amalie Arena since 2014, and it was the site of the Lightning hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2021 for their second of back-to-back championships. Financial terms were not disclosed. Benchmark International and Vinik Sports Group, which owns the Lightning, said their partnership includes more than $3 million in nonprofit contributions to benefit the area. Vinik Sports Group CEO Steve Griggs called Benchmark 'a well-respected brand with global reach and strong ties to the Tampa Bay community' and said Amalie Motor Oil will continue to be a corporate partner of the organization. 'Canadian mutants': Ex-NHLer rips Oilers star player and fans, gets ripped back

This in, the controversy already erupting over which players will and will not be selected for Team Canada at the coming Olympic Games, with former American NHLer Jordan Schmaltz provocatively picking a squad absent both Edmonton Oilers Zach Hyman and Evan Bouchard. Article content For those who don't recall Schmaltz, after a strong college career at North Dakota, he played 42 NHL games from 2016-19, before heading to Europe and retiring in 2022-23. Article content Team Canada 2026 Olympic roster 🏒 Reinhart- McJesus- Marner Marchand-Sid-The Dogg Cirelli- Point-Hagel Bennett-Schiefle-Wilson Extras: Bob Thomas, Fellabrini (14) Toews-Makar Harley-Paryako Morrissey- Doughty Theodore Extra: Dobson (8) Binner Hill Monty (3) — Jordan Schmaltz (@J_Swish24) August 12, 2025 Article content Article content Schmaltz hit a sore spot with Oilers fan, as both Hyman and Bouchard were left off the Four Nations Cup roster last winter, despite having outstanding 2023-24 seasons and playoffs. The concern now is that both players will be left off the Olympic team as well, despite both Hyman and Bouchard again playing brilliant hockey in the 2025 playoffs. Article content Article content Oilers Nation writer Zach Laing @zjlaing has anyone actually watched the oilers play playoff hockey in the last two years? Article content Oilers fan Skinner over .900? (Knows Puck) @CampbellOver900 For a team that's played the very last game of the last 2 seasons, they are severely underwatched by the rest of the hockey world Article content Article content Dobson… Bouchard is better offensively at 5 on 5, better defensively, better on the PP and now is proving to be good on the PK. Not to mention upping his game (to historic production levels and all around best d-man in the playoff levels). Oh ya, outscores away from 92 and 29. … I think they (Team Canada) could use another material driver of outscoring at 5 on 5 – that's what Bouchard is…. Bouchard is 43-39 goals over the course of the last three years without BOTH McDavid and Drai…. One could also show the numbers for how much worse both McDavid and Drai do away from Bouchard – its substantial, their production rates go down and their goal share goes way down. Article content In response, Schmaltz fired back on his critics. Article content Jordan Schmaltz@J_Swish24 The thing you Canadian mutants don't realize (for the record that's a compliment) is the reason you go with Doughty over Bouchard is fairly simple but the average fan wouldn't understand.. when the game is on the line and into the medal rounds Makar is going to play sub 30 minutes. Paryako will give you 18-20. The other guy on the right side is going to play 10-15 minutes. They don't need Bouchard for PP1 and he's not exactly a penalty kill wizard. Helluva hockey player with the puck you can't question that but who gives team Canada a better option in that role of PK / 10-15 a night on the right side? Doughty is way better suited for that assignment. Weegar / Dobson would be as well. As much as it's an all star team you still need definitive roles and guys who understand how to play in certain scenarios. Doughty has won cups, Olympics, four nations, world juniors. And still can BALL.

This fresh face on the Edmonton Oilers' Top Prospects list will attempt to buck long NHL odds

We will kick off our 2025 Cult of Hockey Prospect Series where we typically do, which is…at the bottom. Article content Today, I will cover all the forwards ranked 34-21. Tomorrow, David Staples will do the Defencemen and Goaltenders in that same range. Then, we will go from #20 to #1 between now and training camp. Who will garner top spot? Article content This series of articles has always strived to be a number of things, long before I was a member of the CoH staff. That includes being comprehensive. We intentionally cast a wide net. Players only fall off the list once they: Article content Article content -Make the NHL -Get dealt to a different organization -Age out, or… -Drop off the map. Article content Article content By their very definition, these guys are distant bells. At best, one of more of them may become a useful NHL Bottom-six regular. But most will never play actual NHL games, let alone have a significant role with the big club. And to be frank, some of these guys are rated as high as they are because the organization is not flush with prospects to begin with. Article content And look: When your club hockey is knocking on the door for a Stanley Cup, and have been in the final two years running, part of the price of that success is the spending of draft picks. Article content (Voters: David Staples, Kurt Leavins, Jim Matheson, Ira Cooper. The average of our four votes determined each prospect's standing). Article content Park (Unranked in 2024). Selected in Round 7 of the 2025 draft, #223 overall. Made an initial splash by sticking around in his hoodie on draft day as he lived just around the corner and was rewarded with the spotlight. The 19-year-old enjoyed a breakout year with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL. The 6'1, 188 LB right-shot Center put up 33-33-66 in 55 GP. Added 49 PIM. Scouts describe him as a tenacious, two-way forward who plays quick and smart. Our Cult of Hockey Draft Day summary can be found here. At just 19, Park would seem to be the one guy out of this lot with an outside shot. So, keep an eye out for him. But there is a long road to go. The numbers say that guys from Round 7 only have a 10% chance of playing 100+ NHL games. And three out of four will never see the ice. Park's Uncle is retired NHL forward Richard Park. Article content Article content Grubbe (Ranked 10 in 2024). Grubbe has toiled in the depths of the Oilers organization for a couple years now. The 6'3, 200LB Calgary native was drafted by the Rangers in Round 3, #65 overall in 2021. Worked himself up to a point per game player for the Red Deer Rebels by the time he graduated the WHL. Since being acquired by the Oilers, Grubbe has had two muted offensive seasons in Bakersfield, of 67-8-6-14 in 2-23-24 and 62-2-12-14 in 2024-25. Good friend of the CoH Ira Cooper who watches Bakersfield a great deal described Grubbe last Summer as 'A player the coach will play in tough situations at the AHL level, but questions arise regarding enough skill to translate for the NHL'. Outside shot at a Bottom-six role down the road a ways. Article content Copponi (19). A long shot selection by the Oilers in 2023, #216 overall in Round 7. After graduating from Hockey East (Merrimack for three years, Boston for one), the right shot Center got a productive cup of coffee with the Condors last season (3-0-2-2). Somewhat undersized at 5'11 180 LB, he was generally at or below a point per game in college. Recently signed a two-year AHL deal. Scouts say he is 'a high-energy player who definitely shows some good skill'. Projects as a middle-six AHL man.
