
NISAR mission enters critical 90-day commissioning phase
Chennai, Aug 1 (PTI) The historic NISAR mission, a landmark collaboration between NASA and ISRO, has entered its crucial 90-day commissioning phase, during which scientists will carry out rigorous checks, calibrations and orbital adjustments to prepare the satellite for full-scale earth observation.
The critical phase follows the successful launch of the radar imaging satellite on July 30 aboard a GSLV-F16 rocket from Srikharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking to PTI, Gerald W Bawden, Program Manager for Natural Hazards Research at NASA's Earth Sciences Division, outlined the key activities underway.
'NISAR is inserted at an altitude of 737 km and we need to actually rise up to 747 km and it will take about 45-50 days for those operations to take place," he explained.
After the commissioning is complete, he said the radars will be activated and it will start collecting data over 'all ICE, all land, all the time" from the Earth.
'The resolution will be 5 metres by 5 metres and we will be imaging that every 12 days. So it is a lot of data. It is more data that NASA has collected in any other mission." On the key lessons from the collaboration with the Bengaluru-based space agency for the NISAR mission, the scientist said, NASA learned from the ISRO's focus on how science can help society, while ISRO gained from NASA's deep focus on scientific research.
Bawden said the project brought together scientists from two countries on opposite sides of the world, with a 12.5-hour time difference.
'… we had culture differences and the other thing is that we are on the opposite side of the world. We have to work together and we have the common love for technology." 'The two scientists (of ISRO and NASA) are building partnerships by working together, friendships. This NISAR partnership is more than building an amazing satellite, it is teams that are together to solve bigger problems," he noted.
Responding to a query on the opportunities the collaboration with ISRO offers for NASA, NASA Earth Sciences Division Program Executive Sanghamitra B Dutta said, 'This is the first large earth observing misison that India and the United States have put together. India is also working on this human space flight. So there are collaborations between the US and India on this over the last 4-5 years." 'An Indian astronaut (Subhanshu Shukla) recently went to the International Space Station that has also been built as part of a collaboration between the US and India. We are enormously proud to work with each other and it will come in future in the commercial area, space collaboration and technology development, science area," she said.
Regarding the mission's dual-band radar, Dutta said radar missions have happened in the past.
'But simultaneous observation (of the Earth) in two different frequencies by two different radars flying together did not happen before. Scientists need not confine to the boundary of a country and they always discuss possibilities of new missions and bigger and better science," she said.
During discussions, Dutta said scientists from ISRO and NASA came up with the idea to fly two Radars at once, using two different frequencies to collect more data in different technical ways.
'The idea was first discussed between Space Applications Centre, ISRO Ahmedabad and scientists from Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA. They discussed, brainstormed and came up with the idea of two radars working simultaneously." Supporting Dutta's statement, Bawden said there are major benefits of having two frequencies.
'We have technology challenge, and at the end of the day, we are building the technology to address scientific questions and NASA has the long L Band while ISRO has S band. It is fantastic to study agriculture like how corn grows, soya beans grow." PTI VIJ ROH

Haryana, Israel will collaborate on agriculture, AI: CM Saini
Chandigarh, Aug 7 (PTI) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said on Thursday that the state will collaborate with Israel in various sectors such as research, healthcare, agricultural technology, advanced irrigation systems, artificial intelligence and wastewater management. According to an official statement, Israeli Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, paid a courtesy visit and met the chief minister at the latter's official residence here. The two discussed cooperation and several other essential subjects, the statement said. Saini stated that there was a focus on establishing a Centre of Excellence in Haryana. Discussions on further development of the Integrated Aviation Hub in Hisar and enhancing overseas placement opportunities were also held. The state government has set up the Department of Foreign Cooperation to explore overseas employment opportunities and strengthen ties with other countries. The department is consistently working to provide employment to Haryana's youth abroad and to double the state's exports, Saini said. Over 180 youths from the state are employed in Israel through overseas placement initiatives. Additionally, there has been a demand from across the country to recruit 5,000 nurses in Israel's healthcare sector, the CM said, emphasising Haryana is keen to increase its participation in this initiative. Azar and Saini also talked about setting up a global artificial intelligence (AI) centre in the state to train youth in modern AI skills and promote technological innovation. The state is also planning on working with Israel on new technologies to reuse wastewater for irrigation and make water suitable for agriculture and drinking purposes, the CM said. During the meeting, he presented a copy of the Bhagavad Gita to the Israeli ambassador. Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Arun Kumar Gupta and Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Foreign Cooperation, Amneet P Kumar, were also present on the occasion. Calicut varsity ties up with coop. tech company to develop supercapacitors
The Advanced Materials Research Lab at the University of Calicut has partnered with a Parappanangadi-based tech company to develop supercapacitors, the high-capacity energy storage devices, using indigenous methods. University sources said on Thursday that the collaboration with Malabar Co-op Tech was aimed at taking a breakthrough material developed entirely in India from the lab to real-world applications. The research team lead by Yahya Ismail, Professor, Department of Chemistry, and his student, Sivakrishna Prakash, had been working for the past five years on developing a new-generation energy storage material that would address some of the biggest limitations in current supercapacitors. Ideal for electric vehicles The material combines polyaniline, a highly conductive polymer, with heteroatom-doped reduced graphene oxide, a modified carbon-based nanomaterial known for its exceptional surface area and electrical conductivity. Mr. Ismail and Mr. Prakash said that what sets this invention apart was the strong chemical bondingbetween the components, which would ensure high energy storage, rapid charging, and long-term durability. 'It can store more energy than typical supercapacitors, charge very quickly, and maintain performance for thousands of cycles—making it ideal for electric vehicles, solar energy systems, and portable electronics,' they said. M.K. Jaison, project head, Malabar Co-op Tech, said that the company would provide the engineering support, infrastructure, and technology platform required to manufacture complete supercapacitor devices, facilitating a seamless transition from lab-scale innovation to real-world application. He said that this was for the first time that a cooperative sector body was getting directly engaged in the high-tech energy storage manufacturing domain. Mr. Jaison said that India currently depends on imported electrode materials, primarily from China, to assemble supercapacitors. This over-reliance on imports and limited domestic research and development have historically stifled indigenous innovation and self-reliance in this critical clean energy segment. By focussing on both material development and device manufacturing within India, the project represents a key step towards building a fully localised supply chain for advanced energy storage solutions. It is expected to open up possibilities for large-scale commercialisation, technology export, and job creation in the clean energy sector, he added.
