UK ninja sword ban begins; 1,000 weapons surrendered to govt in knife crime crackdown
Overall, knife crime in England and Wales has risen 87% over the past decade, with 54,587 offences recorded last year alone, a 2% rise from 2023 and among the highest rates in Europe.
On July 29, 2024, teenager Axel Rudakubana attacked a Taylor Swift-themed children's dance event in the northern English town of Southport, killing three girls and stabbing 10 people in one of Britain's most harrowing knife assaults.
Since then, the government has pledged tougher age checks for knife buyers, warned social media firms they could face fines for failing to curb sales and promotion of weapons, and banned zombie-style knives, machetes and ninja swords.
Over the month of July this year, the government urged young people to drop off weapons, including bladed ones, at "amnesty" bins or a mobile van - part of efforts to control knife crime, particularly when it involves youths. The government said at least 1,000 weapons have been handed in.
A mobile van will be deployed at the Notting Hill Carnival in London later this month in response to past knife-related violence by a small number of attendees.
It is unclear whether the "amnesty" bins will stay in place once the month-long campaign comes to an end.
The interior ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
Charities and experts call the government's efforts a step forward but say they fail to address the root causes.
The interior ministry said that knife-related robberies have fallen in seven highest-risk areas, dropping from 14% of all robberies in the seven highest-risk areas in the year ending June 2024 to 6% in the same period to June 2025.
The ban on buying and selling ninja swords is part of the government's pledge to introduce Ronan's Law, named in honour of 16-year-old Ronan Kanda, who was fatally stabbed with a ninja sword in 2022.
Campaigner Martin Cosser, whose son was killed in a knife attack two years ago, previously told Reuters that the issue was not just about the weapon itself, but about the "emotional drivers" that lead people to carry knives in the first place.

Paxos Trust in $48.5 million New York settlement over Binance-related lapses
NEW YORK (Reuters) -Paxos Trust reached a $48.5 million settlement to resolve New York charges the virtual currency company failed to police illegal activity related to cryptocurrency exchange Binance, the state's financial services regulator said on Thursday. Adrienne Harris, New York's financial services superintendent, said Paxos will pay a $26.5 million civil fine and spend $22 million to upgrade its compliance program. Paxos previously partnered with Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, to market and distribute the Binance USD stablecoin. New York's Department of Financial Services said Paxos lacked effective controls to monitor wrongdoing at Binance, failed to escalate red flags to senior management, and had systemic failures in its anti-money laundering program. The regulator said a review it ordered Paxos to conduct found that from July 2017 to November 2022, about $1.6 billion of transactions on Binance's platform involved illicit actors, including Ponzi schemers and people sanctioned in darknet marketplaces. Binance also processed transactions involving entities sanctioned by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control, the review found. New York ordered Paxos in February 2023 to stop issuing Binance's stablecoin. Paxos subsequently ended its partnership with Binance. In a statement, Paxos said it was pleased to settle. It also said it has "fully remediated" the compliance issues, customer accounts were not affected, and consumers were not harmed. Binance was not a defendant in the New York case. It entered a guilty plea in November 2023 and accepted a $4.32 billion criminal penalty for violating federal anti-money laundering and sanctions laws. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission dismissed its own civil case against Binance in May, reflecting a change in approach toward cryptocurrencies during U.S. President Donald Trump's second White House term. FIR against YouTube channels for PAT paper leak
An FIR was filed against a few YouTube channels for allegedly leaking the Periodic Assessment tests (PAT)-1 exam question papers online at Vishrambaug Police Station on Wednesday evening, said Inspector Arun Ghodke. The complaint was filed by Sangita Shinde, assistant education director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). Ghodke said, 'The council conducts the PAT exams across Maharashtra for Classes 2 to 8. The papers are published in Pune and they are sent across the state. Papers were scheduled for August 7 to 8 for Marathi, English, and Math. The channel claimed to share them online few days ago.' He added, 'These exams are not like board exams but because this kind of thing should not happen again, an FIR has been filed. There is no labelling or packaging for these papers. We have sent an email and blocked the YouTube channel. We will now investigate whether these were the actual papers or some edited documents. We will track the IP address and figure out who's channels they are.' According to the complaint, the state government started PAT for students of Classes 3 to 9 for the academic progress of students with the subjects of Marathi as the first language, Mathematics and English as the third language since 2021. From 2023, the State Council of Educational Research and Training organised a basic test for all government, semi-government and aided schools in the state from August 6 to 8 for the progress of students. Accordingly, correspondence was sent to all education officers of all districts, all district administration officers and all education inspectors in Mumbai. From July 17 to 31, documents required for the examination were sent by the council through a private cargo company. It was after this that it was found the papers were leaked on YOuTube channels.
