Unlike most sports cars meant to demonstrate a firm's performance commitments, this will actually see competition. It has been designed to compete in the FIA's new eRally5 regulations, set to replace the Corsa Electric Rally. On the outside, a distinct black, grey, and yellow livery with the GSE branding are present. Large alloy wheels and yellow brake callipers showcase its performance focus. Aggressive bumpers and a roof-mounted intake complete the rally-ready appearance, cues that will likely influence the upcoming road-going Opel Mokka GSE due in late 2025.
Power comes from a single electric motor delivering 207kW and 345Nm of torque. This power is directed to the front wheels via a multi-plate limited-slip differential and a racing transmission. The 54kWh battery pack is carried over from the standard Mokka Electric but gains added protection through special encapsulation and an underride guard.

Chassis upgrades are extensive, featuring Bilstein rally-spec suspension with reinforced McPherson struts upfront and modified springs and dampers on the rigid rear axle. Crucially, ABS, ESP, and traction control systems are removed, giving drivers complete control in rally conditions. The interior is stripped for competition, featuring an FIA-certified roll cage and bucket seats with six-point harnesses. Safety is paramount, with a 400V system that automatically shuts down in a collision and an electrically non-conductive fire extinguishing system.
Opel plans to offer the Mokka GSE Rally to private customers and teams for the 2026 rally season. A prototype will debut at the ELE Rally Eindhoven in the Netherlands today and tomorrow, part of the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup.

FIA announces tender for new WRC promoter

Motorsport's governing body announced on Thursday a tender process to replace Red Bull and German investment company KW25 as commercial rights holders of the World Rally Championship (WRC). The International Automobile Federation (FIA) said JPMorgan would act as financial adviser to Red Bull and KW25, who jointly own Munich-based WRC Promoter GmbH — the commercial arm responsible for media, sponsorship rights, and television production. The promoter, which also oversees the European Rally Championship, took over the WRC rights in 2013 and still had seven years remaining on the contract, according to sources. Reuters reported a year ago that the owners were preparing a potential sale with a target valuation of up to €500m (R10.3bn). The WRC has been in existence since 1973 and this year features 14 rounds on different continents with the showcase Monte Carlo Rally opening the season in January. 'The tender process for the commercial rights holder is a big opportunity for a new enterprise to take the championship into its next chapter with renewed energy and investment,' said the FIA's deputy president for sport Malcolm Wilson. 'We will work with Red Bull and KW25 to find the best fit for this important role.' The FIA said the championship had surged in popularity with a cumulative television audience of 1.3-billion and more than 4-million on-site visitors in 2024, with huge further growth potential. Paraguay makes its debut hosting a round of the championship this weekend and the sport is looking into a future round in the US. 'I am confident that, together with the right partner, we can take the championship to the next level, preserve its proud heritage, and grow its global reach for generations of fans to come,' said FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

5 most affordable EVs in South Africa in 2025

We've rounded up the five most affordable passenger EVs you can buy in South Africa in 2025. With reports from China having suggested BYD is hoping to launch the Atto 1 in South Africa for under R400 000, we were curious what the most affordable electric vehicles (EVs) currently available in our market are. So, before the Atto 1's imminent arrival, we've compiled a list of the five least expensive passenger EVs you can buy at the moment. 5. Mini Aceman E — from R800 000 The Mini Aceman E is powered by a single electric-motor arrangement that produces 135kW and 290N.m of torque, exclusively delivered to the road via the front wheels. The entry-level Aceman (we sampled the flagship, Aceman SE in March 2025) has a claimed operating range of 300km from a fully charged 42.5kWh battery. 4. BYD Atto 3 — from R768 000 The Atto 3 is the first BYD on this list. The Atto 3 is available in two flavours, with the Standard Range derivative serving as the opening gambit to the lineup. This model's 150kW/310N.m electric motor is fed by a 49.92kWh battery, which offers a claimed operating range of 345km on a single, full charge. 3. GWM Ora 03 — from R686 950 Sporting a retro-inspired exterior design, the four-strong GWM Ora 03 lineup is priced from R686 950 for the 300 Super Luxury, which we've evaluated for a road test, to R835 950 for the 400 GT Super Luxury. The base-spec model's electric motor produces 126kW and 250N.m, and is coupled with a 48kWh battery pack that offers a claimed driving range of 310km when fully charged. 2. BYD Dolphin — from R539 900 When the Dolphin made its local debut in early 2024, it was South Africa's most affordable EV. The Dolphin is available in Standard Range and Extended Range configurations, with the former, least expensive of the two featuring a 70kW/180N.m electric motor and a 60.4kWh battery pack that's good for a claimed operating range of 340km/h on a single, full charge. 1. Dayun S5 — from R399 900 Introduced to our market in July 2025, the Dayun S5 lineup is priced from a hair below R400 000, making it the most affordable EV currently available in South Africa. This city car is equipped with a 31.7kWh battery, which offers a claimed range of 330km, and an electric motor that produces only 35kW and 105N.m.
