It is no secret that striker Jonathan David is set to leave Lille on a free transfer this summer.
The Canadian will be available when his contract with the Ligue 1 side expires at the end of June.
And there have been quite a few clubs reportedly after David's signature, meanwhile.
Inter Milan have certainly been among them.
The Nerazzurri will be aiming to revitalize their attack next season, with Marko Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa heading for the exit door.
And Inter's predilection for big name free transfers is hardly a secret.

Rourke throws three TDs, B.C. Lions dump Edmonton Elks 31-14 in season opener

VANCOUVER - Nathan Rourke threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns, and the B.C. Lions opened their CFL season with a 31-14 win over the Edmonton Elks on Saturday. The Canadian quarterback went 27-for-36 on his passing attempts, linking up with Stanley Berryhill III twice in the end zone. Justin McInnis caught his first TD of the year and James Butler drove in another major. Veteran kicked Sean Whyte contributed a 22-yard field goal for the Lions, who played their first game under rookie head coach Buck Pierce. Elks quarterback Tre Ford put up 178 passing yards, connecting on 17 of his 27 attempts and throwing one interception. He was sacked twice. Cody Fajardo chalked up two short-yardage rushing majors for Edmonton, who also have a first-year head coach in Mark Kilam. Rapper Snoop Dogg performed for the announced crowd of 52,837 fans before kickoff. The game got off to a promising start for the Lions with Rourke and his teammates steadily working the ball up the field to give B.C. a first down at Edmonton's two-yard line. Chase Brice came in for short yardage duty and appeared to stretch the ball into the end zone on third down. A review by the command centre, though, determined the QB went down before getting the ball across the line. Ford struggled early, going 0-for-3 on his first attempts of the game before connecting with Zach Mathias for a six-yard gain on his fourth attempt of the night. Edmonton got on the board with just over three minutes left in the first quarter when Cody Grace sent a 66-yard punt into the end zone for a rouge. B.C. again came within inches of a touchdown early in the second frame when Rourke threaded a crisp pass to Jevon Cottoy directly under the uprights. The Canadian receiver fumbled the ball, then stared at his gloves in apparent disbelief. Whyte posted the home side's first points of the night, booting a 22-yard field goal to give the Lions a 3-1 lead. The Elks took control again midway through the second quarter when Fajardo muscled his way through traffic for a one-yard rushing major. Vincent Blanchard missed the convert and Edmonton went up 7-3. The score stood at the end of the first half after the Elks kicker sent a 49-yard field goal attempt wide in the final seconds of the frame. B.C. came alive early in the second half, stringing together a possession that ended with Rourke escaping the pocket, taking a few steps and sailing a 34-yard pass to Stanley Berryhill in the end zone. Whyte made the convert and the Lions jumped out to a 10-7 advantage. Edmonton had an opportunity to level the score minutes later when Blanchard lined up for a 45-yard field goal, but the kick again went wide. Rourke proved on the next possession that he's a dual threat, rushing for 13 yards on one play and 22 on another. He capped the drive with a 37-yard lob to Berryhill under the uprights and another convert from Whyte increased the Lions' lead to 17-7 midway through the third quarter. Ford responded with some fast feet of his own in the dying seconds of the third quarter. The 27-year-old Canadian deftly darted around midfield to avoid multiple sack attempts and got a 37-yard pass off to Justin Rankin, who similarly snuck past several B.C. defenders before being felled at the three-yard line. Edmonton opened the fourth with Fajardo powering through traffic for his second touchdown of the night. Blanchard sent the convert through the uprights to cut the Elks' deficit to three points. B.C. kept pressing and launched a seven-play, 86-yard scoring drive, capped by a 17-yard pass from Rourke to McInnis in the end zone. McInnis, who hails from Pierrefonds, Que., led the CFL in receiving yards last season with 1,469. The Lions defence got to work next with linebacker Ben Hladik picking off Ford's pass and dashing 61 yards to put his team back in prime scoring position. B.C. capitalized with Rourke handing off to running back Butler, who sprinted into the end zone for the home side's fourth touchdown of the night. Another convert from Whyte put the Lions ahead 31-14. A massive 92-yard kickoff return by Javon Leake looked to cut Edmonton's deficit midway through the fourth, but Elks linebacker Josiah Schakel was called for an illegal block on the play. NOTES Lions linebacker Jeremy Lewis (hamstring) and defensive lineman Deshawn Stevens (foot) did not return for the second half. … The game marked the first time two Canadian quarterbacks have started and gone head to head in a CFL season opener. UP NEXT Elks: Host the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday, June 19. Lions: Visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 7, 2025.

Club World Cup team guide – Inter: Exit of coach Inzaghi adds to Champions League pain

The inaugural Club World Cup starts on June 14, with 32 teams split into eight groups of four. As part of our guides to the teams that will feature, James Horncastle gives you the background on Inter. Follow the Club World Cup on The Athletic this summer… Better than their performance in the Champions League final would suggest. Inter were on for a treble until late April and the accumulation of fatigue, psychological baggage and Paris Saint-Germain putting in a historic display left a bad impression of a team that remains, for many, the best in Italy, regardless of Napoli's domestic league title. The last four years have been a dynasty in disguise insofar as Inter have come within inches of winning far more than they actually did. Inter lifted the UEFA Cup in 1994 after Wim Jonk and Nicola Berti clinched back-to-back 1-0 wins over Salzburg in both legs of the final. Nearly two decades later, a rematch occurred in the Champions League group stages. It wasn't as consequential because, ultimately, a trophy was not riding on the outcome. But another 1-0 win for Inter on a wintry Austrian night ensured they had a FIFA ranking commensurate with Club World Cup qualification. This is awkward, as it is still a work in progress. nter were hoping Simone Inzaghi wouldn't leave after the Champions League final, but he accepted the offer to join Al Hilal, a fellow Club World Cup participant, who have made him possibly the highest-paid coach in the world with an annual net salary reportedly worth €25million (£21m; $28.5m). Reaching the Champions League final extended Inter's season and meant they missed out on other coaches who were snapped up by their rivals. Attempts to headhunt Cesc Fabregas from Como failed. They didn't have one until the end of this week. After Como emphatically rebuffed their attempts to hire Fabregas, Inter were left in a difficult spot and time was of the essence. Intriguingly, treble winner Thiago Motta was overlooked for another member of that legendary 2010 team. Inter brought back Cristian Chivu, who only recently made the step-up into senior-level coaching. Chivu was parachuted in at Parma in February and, to his credit, he kept them in Serie A, fulfilling his remit. No one, however, expected he would receive an offer from Inter a few months later. That said, the Romanian fits the club's brief. Inter want to get younger and Chivu started his coaching career in the club's academy system, winning the Primavera (under-19) championship. On the one hand, it is an underwhelming appointment. On the other, Inzaghi's own career took off after Lazio courageously backed him based on his record in their youth system. Inter hope Chivu will follow the same trajectory. It is still the skipper, Lautaro Martinez. People flippantly say he doesn't do it in big games — but maybe he just didn't do it in the one big game you watched. He has scored away at Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Bayern and in Milan derbies. He put away the last penalty in the shootout that decided the World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and the Netherlands. Had he missed it, Messi would never have won that tournament. Lautaro was the top scorer at the Copa America in the U.S. last summer and got the only goal in the final. Give the guy a break. Given how much of the build-up to the Champions League final was about Inter's old age and their lack of superstars, what do we say here? Davide Frattesi was a rising star at Sassuolo. The same goes for Kristjan Asllani at Empoli. Yann Bisseck is a giant defender in need of improvement. The rising stars are coming. Inter are amid a rejuvenation window. They have already made moves since a mini pre-Club World Cup transfer market opened, signing Petar Sucic, 21, from Dinamo Zagreb and Luis Henrique, 23, from Marseille to freshen up the midfield. Kanye West sampled some of Inter's chants for his latest album (not his latest single…). Shall we say, it speaks volumes that the ultras associate with West and leave it at that. If I had to choose one chant from the Inter songbook, it would be 'Eeeeeee per la gente che/ama soltanto te/per tutti i kilometri che ho fatto per te/Internazionale deve vincereeeeee'. The rhyme scheme naturally works better in Italian. 'It's for the people who/only love you/for all the miles we cover for you/Inter have got to win.' That would be Juventus and their 'cousins', Milan. So much of Inter's core identity is about what they're not. For instance, unlike their two principal nemeses, Inter have never been caught up in a scandal punished by relegation. 'Mai in B' — never in the second division — is boastfully spray-painted in blue on the concrete walls behind the Inter end at San Siro. Inter fans also like to gleefully sing, 'How come you never win the Champions League?' at Juventus. This peaked when Juve lost two finals in three years, in 2015 and 2017. Inter have since experienced the same pain themselves and won't be leading chants of that anytime soon. They are the original Inter and shouldn't need distinguishing from Internacional in Brazil or Inter Miami in MLS. It is weird for them to be talked about as Inter Milan when in Italy everyone knows them simply as 'Inter'. This is perhaps a legacy of 'AC' Milan's English founder, Herbert Kilpin, using the English word for Milan instead of Milano, whereas Inter have always just been Inter or, more formally for purposes such as a UEFA draw, FC Internazionale Milano. To make Inter feel better about themselves in the aftermath of the Champions League final. Don't pity them. Have some empathy.
