Askey still aiming to strengthen Truro City squad

Yahoo25-07-2025
Truro City manager John Askey says he is still looking to strengthen his side ahead of their first season in the National League.
The Tinners have already brought in a number of new players such as Harry Kite, Lirak Hasani and Max Kinsey, while Luke Jephcott has moved on a permanent deal after being on loan at Truro last season.
City begin their first-ever campaign in the fifth tier at Wealdstone on Saturday, 9 August after winning National League South last season.
"We still need another goalkeeper along with Lavs (Dan Lavercombe), we need another centre-back, another centre-forward and probably a couple of lads who can play in different positions," Askey told BBC Sport.
"We're only a small squad and if we want to compete then we need to bring in one or two more experienced players."
Askey is hoping he can strengthen his side before the start of the season.
But he says he understands that he may have to wait until later in the summer transfer window for the right players to become available as other clubs make decisions on their squads.
"We're pretty close on one player, he's just got past his medical," he added.
"Then what you find at smaller clubs is you have to wait until you get towards the start of the season and you'll pick up probably better players than what you would at the start of pre-season.
"Truro is not going to be players' first choices, so we have to wait and then when lads feel as though they've got something at an elite club, then all of a sudden the contract gets taken away or they're not taken on, then hopefully we can step in and pick up one or two bargains."

MLB rumors: Dodgers ‘engaged' in trade talks on 3 Twins relievers

The post MLB rumors: Dodgers 'engaged' in trade talks on 3 Twins relievers appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Major League Baseball trade deadline looms large over the whole league. Even the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers have been active. The Dodgers have plenty of players to move, including Dustin May. Their top targets in the MLB trade market are relief pitchers. Los Angeles has its sights set on Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, and Louis Varland. The Dodgers have dealt with injuries all season, including to their closer, Tanner Scott. Because of that, the front office wants to bring in more depth that can help the team navigate its way to back-to-back World Series wins. Duran has emerged as a viable option at this year's MLB trade deadline. He is still one of the top closers in the league, even if his team is struggling. Duran and Jax have been in rumors for the last few weeks. Neither player was a 2025 MLB All-Star, but both have been excellent in the regular season. However, the Twins' asking price will be steep for both of them. According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Dodgers are one of many teams talking with Minnesota about each of them. While both relievers would be big subtractions at the MLB trade deadline, they might not be the best Twin moved in the next 24 hours. The Houston Astros have interest in Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa, who is willing to waive his no-trade clause to make the deal happen. With Byron Buxton on the Twins' injured list, the team has turned into sellers very fast. Duran, Jax, and Varland are all names to watch at the MLB trade deadline. It is unlikely that the Dodgers would trade for all three, but adding any one of them improves their bullpen. For a team trying to hold off the competition in the National League, Los Angeles needs all the help it can get. Padres' Robert Suarez replaces Chris Sale for 2025 MLB All-Star Game

The post Padres' Robert Suarez replaces Chris Sale for 2025 MLB All-Star Game appeared first on ClutchPoints. The MLB All-Star lineups are set, and the rest of the rosters for both the NL and AL are getting finalized. The league recently announced the reserves, but some players are dealing with injuries. Three players have been added to the rosters on Tuesday, including Luke Abbott of the Cincinnati Reds replacing Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and then third baseman Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays, replacing Alex Bregman. Now, Robert Suarez, closer for the San Diego Padres, is replacing Braves' star Chris Sale on the National League roster. Sale is dealing with an injury and is on the 60-day IL. Suarez is tied with Josh Hader with 25 saves to lead the league. This is a deserving nod for a closer who is very valuable for the Padres. He has slumped a little as of late, but has been the league's leader in saves for the majority of the season. This will be his second All-Star nod as he was one in 2024 as well. Suarez joins his teammate, Jason Adam, as an NL reliever on the roster. Edwin Diaz and Randy Rodriguez are the other two relievers on the roster. The American League currently only has three: Hader, Andres Munoz, and Aroldis Chapman. Suarez's ERA is now at 3.82, which is not where he wants it. Over the last few outings for him, Suarez has bounced back after a rough stretch. He allowed three runs over two straight games and allowed five in one outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks in a non-save opportunity. The Padres desperately need him to bounce back to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Padres are taking on the Diamondbacks once again, this time in San Diego. The Dbacks took the opener of a four-game set, and the Friars need to return the favor to avoid being put in a bad spot. Phillies Predicted To Part Ways With $8.5 Million Free Agent Signing

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are in the midst of a very competitive postseason push in the loaded National League. The NL East is up for grabs as the New York Mets are very good alongside the Phillies. Even the Miami Marlins are making a late push for a postseason spot. With that in mind, the Phillies are going to need to make all the right moves in the coming weeks in order to give themselves the best chance to win in October. Edward Eng of That Ball's Outta Here recently predicted the Phillies would cut bait with reliever Jordan Romano as early as sometime this season due to his disastrous play. The Phillies signed Romano last offseason to a one-year contract. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JULY 20: Jordan Romano #68 of the Philadelphia Phillies throws a pitch in the eighth inning during a game against the Los Angeles Angels at Citizens Bank Park on July 20, 2025... PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JULY 20: Jordan Romano #68 of the Philadelphia Phillies throws a pitch in the eighth inning during a game against the Los Angeles Angels at Citizens Bank Park on July 20, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More"Finally, we have perhaps the Phillies' biggest move this past offseason in signing reliever Jordan Romano to potentially be the closer for the team in 2025," Eng wrote. "Well, that plan certainly backfired when Romano struggled immensely coming out of the gate. By the end of April, the 32-year-old right-hander was flashing an abysmal 12.19 ERA but somehow kept his blown saves to just two. "Romano has been pushed to some lower-leverage situations but somehow manages to remain in the Phillies bullpen mix for the moment. But for what has turned out to be a failed experiment so far, there's a chance Romano won't make it to the end of the season." Romano has been a thorn in the Phillies' side all season. Rather than being a dominant seventh, eighth, or ninth inning reliever for the team, the righty has been a low-leverage guy who struggles in that role. The veteran reliever has an ERA near 7.00 in almost 40 innings. ERA isn't always a good indicator of success for relief pitchers, as one bad outing can cause it to balloon up, but Romano's struggles began in April and have lasted all season. It's about time the Phillies cut ties with him. More MLB: Dylan Cease Predicted To Leave Padres, Sign With Loaded NL Powerhouse
