Meta introduces V-JEPA 2, an AI world model to power robotics and autonomous systems

It seems the AI community is gearing up for the next frontier in AI, world models. Meta, on Wednesday, June 11, unveiled its new AI model, V-JEPA 2. Dubbed as a 'world model', the V-JEPA 2 has the ability to understand the physical world. The model has been designed to comprehend movements of objects and has the potential to enhance robotics and self-driving cars.
The V-JEPA 2 is an open-source AI model that can understand and predict real-world environments in 3D. It allows AI to build an internal simulation of the real world, essentially helping it reason, plan, and act much like humans. While a traditional AI model would rely heavily on labelled data, the V-JEPA 2 is reportedly trained to identify patterns in unlabelled video clips, using these as its foundation for internal 3D reasoning.
The world model highlights the tech giant's increasing focus towards more intuitive and intelligent AI systems that can engage with the physical world. Reportedly, this technology can be beneficial in the domains of robotics, augmented reality, and future AI assistants.
'Today, we're excited to share V-JEPA 2, the first world model trained on video that enables state-of-the-art understanding and prediction, as well as zero-shot planning and robot control in new environments. As we work toward our goal of achieving advanced machine intelligence (AMI), it will be important that we have AI systems that can learn about the world as humans do, plan how to execute unfamiliar tasks, and efficiently adapt to the ever-changing world around us,' Meta wrote in its official blog.
The latest announcement from Meta comes at a time when the company is facing stiff competition from rivals Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. According to a recent CNBC report, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made AI a top priority for the company, which is also planning to invest $14 billion in Scale AI, a company that pioneers data labelling for AI training.
When it comes to the specifications, the V-JEPA 2 is a 1.2 billion-parameter model that has been built using the Meta Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA) model which was shared in 2022. V-JEPA is Meta's first model trained on video that was released in 2024, with the latest V-JEPA 2 the company claims to have improved action prediction and world modelling capabilities which allows robots to interact with unfamiliar objects and environments to accomplish a task.
In simple words, world models are mental simulations that help us in predicting how the physical world behaves. We humans develop this intuition right from a young age, such as we know instinctively that a ball thrown in the air will fall back down. Similarly, while walking in a crowded space we avoid colliding with others. This inner sense of cause and effect helps us to act more effectively in complex situations.
When it comes to AI agents, they need similar capabilities to interact with the real world. Accordion to Meta, to achieve this their world models should be capable of understanding their surroundings and recognise objects, actions, and movements; they should be able to predict how things will change over time, especially in response to actions; they should plan ahead by simulating possible outcomes and choosing the best course of action.
So to simplify, an AI world model is an internal simulation that helps a machine to understand, predict, and plan within a physical environment. Essentially, it helps the AI to anticipate how the world will change in response to actions. Now, this could enable more intelligent, goal-driven behavior in AI.
The V-JEPA 2 model could likely enhance real-world machines like self-driving cars and robots. For instance, self-driving cars would need to understand their surroundings in real time to move about safely. While most AI models depend on massive amounts of labelled data or video footage, V-JEPA 2 reportedly uses something known as simplified 'latent' space to reason about how an object moves or interacts.
According to Meta's Chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, a world model is an 'abstract digital twin of reality' that allows AI to predict what will happen next and plan accordingly. It is a big leap towards making AI more useful in the physical world. In one of his recent presentations, LeCun stated that helping machines understand the physical world is different from teaching them language.
World models, which are a recent phenomenon, are gaining attention in the AI research community for bringing new dimensions other than large language models used in tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
In September 2024, noted AI researcher Fei-Fei Li raised $230 million for her startup World Labs, which focuses on building large-scale world models. On the other hand, Google DeepMind is also developing its own version of a world model named Genie which is capable of simulating 3D environments and games in real time.

Delhi: NDMC nod for ₹135 crore projects to boost infra

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Thursday approved projects worth over ₹135 crore for procurement of 120 Megawatts (MW) renewable energy, water metres, purchase of hydraulic high pressure jetting machine and for the promotion of art and culture in the NDMC area, among other projects, said officials. The decisions were taken in a meeting chaired by minister Parvesh Verma and attended by MP Bansuri Swaraj and other top NDMC functionaries, the council meeting took these decisions. A major welfare decision was taken regarding regularisation of Type-I and Type-II municipal quarters allotted in the name of the spouse or ward of former NDMC employees. These provisions apply to cases where the original allottee has retired or passed away, and the spouse or ward is a regular NDMC employee—even if the application was submitted after the permissible time period. The Council approved a one-time policy relaxation, including waiver of pending dues for such applicants. Chairman Parvesh Verma announced that penalties imposed on occupants residing for more than two years beyond permissible limits will also be waived. Citing one case where a family had a penalty of ₹24 lakh, he confirmed that the full amount has been waived off. 'This is not just about housing regularisation, it is about honouring families who served NDMC for years. It is our responsibility to stand by them,' said Verma. He further informed that in cases where judicial proceedings are pending in courts, NDMC will move towards withdrawal of those cases. The council approved procurement of 120 MW of firm, dispatchable renewable energy from NHPC Ltd. at ₹4.62/kWh to address the shortfall in power demand and meet renewable power obligations. It also sanctioned ₹4.56 crore for replacing outdated electronic energy metres with smart metres and ₹30.84 crore for swapping over 15,000 old water metres with AI-enabled smart water metres, marking a full transition to digital utility monitoring in the NDMC zone, said officials aware of the matter. 'This council is committed to transforming New Delhi into a model of responsive governance and sustainable urban development. All our decisions are aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a modern, inclusive and efficient capital — every initiative approved today is a step towards delivering citizen-first governance,' said NDMC vice chairman Kuldeep Singh Chahal. Acknowledging aging infrastructure, NDMC cleared ₹6.75 crore for replacement of life-served 33kV power cables, and ₹5.20 crore for a hydraulic high-pressure jetting machine to manage drainage before the monsoon. In another major move, ₹70.44 crore was allocated for the desilting of the Sunehri drain near Lodhi Road, a joint project with the DMRC flagged as a top priority by the Lieutenant Governor, according to officials. To bolster the cultural identity of the capital's core, NDMC approved 1% of its annual budget for the promotion of art and culture, including music and heritage festivals. The Council also approved ₹4.18 crore for hiring temporary urinals and comfort stations for national events, and ₹6.64 crore for shifting water lines in Sarojini Nagar in coordination with NBCC's redevelopment project. Small amounts have been allocated for other civic projects as well, officials said. For the welfare of employees, a one-time policy relaxation was approved to regularize quarters for families of deceased or retired staff. Hospital Patient Care Allowances and Conveyance Allowances were approved for doctors and medical staff. The Council also passed amendments and framed Recruitment Rules (RRs) for over 1,000 posts across categories including stenographers, assistants, carpenters, metre inspectors and medical staff. Notably, 17 posts of deputy directors will now be merged with four joint director roles, expanding top-level administrative strength to 21.

Netizens claim major internet outage caused by cyberattack, all details on Cloudflare, GCP downtime here

An internet outage on a massive scale this Wednesday, caused a downtime for Google Cloud, and Cloudflare. Meanwhile, netizens are crediting this major outage to a large-scale cyberattack. However, Google or Cloudflare have not yet issued any official statements related to this cyberattack yet, as per reports. There are still no confirmed links to the internet outage or the downtime of these services by the tech giants with any cyberattack, but Downdetector has witnessed an increasing number of users experiencing downtime. According to a Times Now report, other services like Spotify, Discord, Fubo, and Twitch are also among the services that have been affected drastically due to the internet outage on Wednesday, according to reports. 'Outage reports for music streamer Spotify in particular, peaked around 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time before dropping off, and some users began saying their access was restored,' says AP. Even though an official confirmation is still awaited, it is likely that the disruption in services of these platforms were due to the overall downtime of cloud services like GCP, or Cloudflare. 'Google's Cloud status page said an incident with their systems affected clients in the U.S. and abroad. The company also posted that services are starting to recover after its engineers identified and began to mitigate the issue,' an AP report read. 'We have identified the root cause and applied appropriate mitigations,' Google Cloud said. It added that there is no estimate for when the issue would be fully resolved, as per AP. Meanwhile, a Grok AI query response on X said, 'It's true, a major internet outage hit on June 12, 2025, affecting Google Cloud, Spotify, Discord, and more, starting around 2 p.m. ET. Likely caused by Google Cloud authentication issues, it disrupted many services.' 'Google and Cloudflare are investigating, with some services possibly recovering, but the situation is still unfolding as of 3:27 PM PDT,' the Grok AI response read. A social media post read, 'AWS, Azure, Google Cloud all down. What the heck is going on? Is this an international cyberattack?' However, a user commented on this post, claiming that AWS is not down. Meanwhile, a response was received on CloudFlare's behalf, which suggests that this is a Google Cloud outage. The response also says, 'A limited number of services at Cloudflare use Google Cloud and were impacted. We expect them to come back shortly. The core Cloudflare services were not impacted.'
