We focus on preventing Thalassemia through education: TSCS
Aligned with the Thalassemia International Federation's 2025 global theme, 'Together for Thalassemia: Uniting Communities, Prioritising Patients,' the event highlighted the importance of community involvement and patient-centric strategies in combating Thalassemia.
The day began with an awareness walk that witnessed enthusiastic participation from patients, caregivers, and volunteers. This was followed by cultural performances showcasing the talents of Thalassemia patients, creating an atmosphere of joy and unity.
Dr Chandrakant Agarwal, president, TSCS, emphasised the society's commitment to improving the lives of those affected by Thalassemia. 'Our focus remains on empowering patients and advocating for better prevention and treatment strategies through education, collaboration, and community engagement,' he stated.

Staying true to tradition, each guest seated at the table was served on a banana leaf. Speaking about the initiative, Nihal Reddy, owner of Akan, shared, 'Every year on August 15, we dedicate the day to a cause. This year, we chose to focus on Thalassemia. We serve traditional food as part of the fundraiser, and the proceeds go towards supporting the cause. I first learned about Thalassemia from Krishna, the founder of Blood Warriors, and later my wife, who is a doctor, explained it in detail. I realised that in India, many are prone to this disease, but awareness is low. That is why I wanted to focus on it this year. Compared to last year, we had more people participating, and I hope it continues to grow.'

Thalassemics in lurch as LNJP doctor set to retire
NEW DELHI: Thalassemia patients over 12 years of age at the Lok Nayak Hospital are reportedly worried, as the facility has instructed them to seek an alternative place for treatment. The patients allege that the only doctor from the paediatric Thalassemia ward treating them, is set to retire with no replacement from the hospital in sight. They have written to the facility's Medical Director (MD) requesting the hospital administration to arrange a permanent doctor from the General Medicine department for the care of Thalassemics. Officials said about 63 patients aged over 12 years will be affected by the purported move of the hospital. When reached out for comments, no response was received from LNJP MD Dr BL Chaudhary. 'It is our humble request that we are all Thalassemia patients who have been receiving regular blood transfusions and treatment from Loknayak Hospital since birth. For years, we have received excellent treatment under the supervision of Dr. Sudha (Pediatric Thalassemia Ward), for which we are extremely grateful. We have recently received the information that Dr. Sudha is going to retire in the next few months. This information is a matter of great concern for us, as we are all worried about our regular medical care and future treatment after her,' patients' letter to the hospital's MD read.

Telangana Governor launches Dialysis premier league poster
Hyderabad: Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has officially unveiled the poster for the upcoming Dialysis Premier League (DPL) 2025. He praised the Umeed Charitable Trust and SAP Kidney Center for their efforts in promoting sports among dialysis patients. The event, India's largest sporting competition exclusively for dialysis patients, is scheduled for 15 August at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Stadium in Yousufguda. It aims to celebrate the spirit of freedom and resilience, demonstrating that life on dialysis can still be active and empowering. Games will include Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Carrom Board, and a Quiz Competition for technicians, among others. Lucky draw winners will also be awarded free kidney transplant services. At the unveiling, Dr Mohd Shoeb A Khan, Dr Mohd Niaz A Khan, Dr Mohd Aqib A Khan, and Mohd Hasan A Khan were present to reaffirm their commitment to patient empowerment.
