‘No time for life': Andhra Pradesh's new 10-hour work rule slammed by workers, unions
The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to raise the maximum working hours from nine to 10 per day in a move that has led to outrage and backlash on social media. This decision from the TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh will allow private companies and factories to increase their maximum working hours to 10 per day, up one hour from the earlier nine.
As per a PTI report, the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Minister K Parthasarathy said that it has been decided to amend labour laws to make them 'favourable' to workers and investors.
However, workers on social media struggled to see how increased working hours would be 'favourable' for them. The move has also drawn the ire of trade unions,
On social media, users said that increased work hours would benefit only business owners at the cost of employees. Many were of the opinion that private companies would implement 10 hours as mandatory policy, further affecting work-life balance.
'Good for financial growth. What about mental health? 10 hrs work, 2 hrs travelling, 8 hrs sleep, you have to do everything in left 4 hours,' wrote X user Ankit.
'So the Andhra Pradesh govt thinks longer hours = better productivity? No, it means exploitation. More hours, same pay, worse lives. Workers deserve dignity, not burnout,' X user Supriya opined.
Several people said the move will lead to overworked employees who have no time to spend with family.
'9 hours of working itself was a lot and they still increased it. Overworking your employees has tickled down effects, people will have no time to spend with their families. AP fertility rate is already falling rapidly & you're disincentivizing people from having/raising kids,' an X user said.
Others noted how maximum working hours in parts of India are already more than the global average of 8 hours per day.
'The Government is hand in glove with the corrupt corporations that want to exploit cheap labour,' a user said.
Dozens of people wondered whether increased working hours would come with an accompanying pay raise.
"Because of this (amendments to labour laws), investors in factories will (come to our state). These labour rules will be favourable for labourers and they will come to invest more. Globalisation is happening in every state. These amendments were brought to implement global rules," said Minister K Parthasarathy.
Further, the minister observed that the cabinet has also relaxed night shift rules to enable more women to work in the night shifts.
According to the I&PR Minister, women were not allowed to work in the night shifts earlier but now they can work with safeguards such as consent, transport facility, security and surveillance.
Meanwhile, K Ramakrishna, State Secretary of CPI, opposed the NDA alliance government's stand on labour laws amendments. He alleged that the Central and state governments are working against the interests of workers.
"For the past 11 years, the Modi government has repeatedly taken measures that infringe upon workers' rights in India," Ramakrishan told PTI on Saturday.

CPI(M-L) likely to contest around 45 seats in Bihar Assembly election
The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), an ally of the Opposition Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) in Bihar, is planning to contest around 45 seats of the total 243 in the Assembly election due later this year. The CPI(M-L) will also launch a campaign, 'Badlo Sarkar-Badlo Bihar' (change the government, change Bihar)', across the State soon. Addressing mediapersons in Patna on Tuesday (June 10, 2025), CPI(M-L) national general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said: 'Our party has been making preparations to contest 40-45 Assembly seats in the upcoming election. In the coming days, there would be talks on seat sharing and the agendas on which the Mahagathbandhan would contest the poll.' Won 12 in 2020 election In the last 2020 Assembly election, the party won 12 seats out of 19 it contested. The CPI(M-L), the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) together won 16 out of the total 29 seats in the election. The CPI had contested six seats, while the CPI(M) fought on four seats. Both won two seats each. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the CPI(M-L) won two seats of Ara and Karakat of the total 40 seats. 'No governance' The CPI(M-L) slammed the NDA governments led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the State on national security and law and order issues. 'Today there is no government as such in the State. Law and order has collapsed and the people of the State are caught between crime and corruption,' Mr. Bhattacharya alleged. 'Cases of rape have become common, and feudal atrocities have increased in the name of development and good governance in the State. People of the State now are trying to get rid of this oppressive government,' he said. The party leader said the CPI(M-L) would run the Badlo Sarkar-Badlo Bihar campaign from June 18 to June 27, especially in the four regions of Shahabad, Saran-Champaran, Magadh, and Muzaffarpur to Darbhanga. Calls for special session The CPI(M-L) leader criticised the Modi-led government over its foreign policy too. 'The Modi government had sent seven delegations to 32 countries (following Operation Sindoor), but India's international isolation continues. They [the Central government] should call a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terrorist incident and the situation thereafter,' he said. 'The BJP-led NDA government has weakened the country on every front, especially on issues related with national security and foreign policy,' he said. On the ongoing (anti-Maoist) 'Operation Kagar' in Chhattisgarh, Mr. Bhattacharya said: 'It's all state- sponsored violence. The five Left parties of the country have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 9 demanding an immediate stay on the ongoing operation.' Polit Bureau member Dhirendra Jha, party legislators Gopal Ravidas and Sandeep Saurabh, party MLC Sashi Yadav, and senior State leaders K.D. Yadav and Umesh Singh were present on the occasion.

'Like cat guarding milk': Rajnath Singh slams UNSC for naming Pakistan in anti-terror panel; says PoK will join 'Bharat' soon
Defence minister Rajnath Singh addresses a gathering during a dialogue on the topic 'National Security & Terrorism', in Dehradun. (PTI) NEW DELHI: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday criticised the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for appointing Pakistan as the vice-chair of its counter-terrorism panel. Singh said this decision is similar to "making the cat guard the milk" as Pakistan has a known history of protecting and supporting terrorists. "What is astonishing is that this Counter-Terrorism panel, was formed after the 9/11 terror attacks. Pakistan had sheltered the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. This (decision) is akin to cat guarding the milk," Singh said. At an event in Dehradun, Singh said Pakistan has supported terrorism for many years and described Operation Sindoor, which was carried out in response to the Pahalgam attack, as the "biggest action" against terrorism in India's history. Singh pointed out that both India and Pakistan became independent at the same time, but while India is now seen as the "mother of democracy", Pakistan has gained the label of "father of global terrorism". He said this comparison should be kept in mind. Singh also said Pakistan is "stubborn" and needs to be dealt with using "strategic, diplomatic and economic pressure" from the global community to stop terrorism from its land. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3.5, 4.5 BHK Homes starting at ₹4.89 Cr.* Hero Homes Learn More Undo "Pakistan has always given shelter to terrorists, trained them on its soil and helped them. Pahalgam (attack) was just an example, but I want to tell you that list of Pakistan-aided terrorists is very long. And, Pakistan always tries to justify terrorism. So, it is important that we eliminate not just these terrorists but the entire terror infrastructure that aids them," he said. He added that Pakistan has not been able to stop development in Kashmir despite efforts. "Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link is a shining example of the government's relentless pursuit of progress in Jammu & Kashmir. Soon, PoK will join us and say 'I, too, am Bharat'," he said. Shashi Tharoor, Priyanka Chaturvedi Share Key Insights After Meeting PM Modi At His Residence Calling terrorism a problem for humanity and a global issue, Singh said that no society should accept it. He also mentioned that some people glorify terrorists as "freedom fighters" and said, "no revolution is born out of the womb of terrorism, it only engenders destruction and hatred". Singh further stated that "No religious, ideological or political reason can justify terrorism. No human objective can ever be achieved through bloodshed and violence." He said Pakistan supports terrorism and a large portion of its foreign aid is used to fund this support. "Funding Pakistan means funding the infrastructure of terrorism. Pakistan is a nursery of terrorism. It should not be nourished," he said, asking other countries to stop giving money to Pakistan. Singh said that Pakistan's land has been a shelter for global terror groups. He named terrorists like Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar who move freely there, and added that even senior officers of the Pakistan Army have attended terrorists' funerals. "Now, the same country is expected to lead the global community against terrorism. This raises serious questions on the intentions and policies of the international system," he said. Singh urged the international community and organisations like the UN to take the issue of terrorism seriously. He said, "Only when we are free from terrorism, will we be able to move towards the goal of global peace, progress and prosperity."

Kamal Haasan to make Rajya Sabha debut, set to be elected unopposed
In a significant political development, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan is poised to make his debut in the Rajya Sabha. The MNM chief, along with five other candidates, is set to be elected unopposed after their nominations were officially accepted on Tuesday. As an ally of the DMK, Haasan-led MNM was allotted a Rajya Sabha seat as per an understanding reached between the two parties ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Haasan campaigned for the DMK alliance in last year's Parliamentary election. A release from the office of the Returning Officer/Additional Secretary, Legislative Assembly Secretariat, said the nominations of Makkal Neethi Maiam founder Haasan, DMK nominees P Wilson, SR Sivalingam and Rajathi and IS Inbadurai and M Dhanapal (both AIADMK), were taken up for scrutiny on Tuesday. With the nomination of these candidates being accepted, they are now set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. Wilson will be representing the state for a successive term, while this would be Haasan's maiden innings in the House of Representatives. He had unsuccessfully contested the 2021 Assembly polls in Coimbatore South and lost to BJP Mahila Morcha chief Vanathi Srinivasan. He joined the DMK-led bloc last year. Six Rajya Sabha members from Tamil Nadu, including DMK ally MDMK's top leader Vaiko and PMK's Anbumani Ramadoss, are set to retire on July 24, 2025, and the Election Commission had last month announced elections to the Upper House from Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, nominations from seven independent candidates were rejected during the same process. The candidates filed nomination papers to contest for the June 19 biennial polls to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu. In the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Haasan signed and presented the papers to the Returning Officer and Additional Secretary (Legislative Assembly), B Subramaniyam, at the Secretariat. The key Rajya Sabha election-related dates are June 2, 2025 (issue of notification), June 9 (last date for nominations), June 10 (scrutiny of nominations, June 12 (last date for withdrawal of candidatures) and June 19 (date of poll and counting of votes).
