KickFlip returns with new album, personal touch
JYP Entertainment's youngest pop group, KickFlip is returning with another album full of rebellious charm.
"Kick Out, Flip Now!" marks the group's second release, arriving just four months after debut album "Flip it, Kick it!" Following the strong performance of the debut — surpassing 300,000 sold in preorders — the latest album has already exceeded 350,000 sold in preorders, showing the group's steady rise in popularity.
'We wanted this album to be like a stamp that solidifies KickFlip's identity,' said Donghwa. 'That's why we got even more involved in the production, trying to infuse it with our own unique color.'
Kyehoon, Amaru, Donghwa, Minje and Donghyeon actively participated in the album's production, helping shape the group's distinctive sound.
The youngest in the group, Donghyeon, took part in composing lead track "Freeze," an energetic song that evokes 1990s nostalgia with a twist of glitch and hyperpop synth sounds. The track is highlighted by the weighty rap verses from Minje and Kyehoon, as well as a catchy hook in the latter half that invites listeners to sing along. Kyehoon, Donghwa and Minje wrote the cheeky lyrics, capturing the spirit of youth longing for freedom.
'As we were working on the song, I kept thinking, 'This fits our group so well.' So when it was chosen as the lead track, I was incredibly honored. Collaborating with the older members was a lot of fun, too,' Donghyeon said.
Amaru, who had been composing music even before the group's debut, contributed to both the composition and arrangement of the fifth track, "Complicated!!" He also wrote the lyrics, showing potential as a self-producing artist.
'I've been writing songs since before my debut, and at one point, I wrote over 100 songs in a single year. 'Complicated!!' is one of those songs, and I feel especially attached to it. I'm thrilled to perform it with the group,' Amaru shared.
Actively participating in production, the bandmates have been deeply reflecting on the image they want for the group.
Leader Kyehoon explained, 'In our daily lives, we're just cheerful and lively like any ordinary boys. That's the vibe we wanted to capture — an authentic image of teenagers. I think that really came through in the songs we produced this time. We hope fans will look forward to the narrative KickFlip continues to build.'
KickFlip's momentum is expected to grow even stronger with several performances lined up at major international festivals this summer. The rookie septet is scheduled to perform at Lollapalooza Chicago on Aug. 2 and Summer Sonic Bangkok 2025 on Aug. 23 and 24.
'At these festivals, we want to showcase KickFlip's own take on summer and refreshing vibes, something like an explosion of mint-colored energy,' said Donghwa. 'We'd love to earn a reputation as one of the most powerful K-pop performances.'

The Korean and Canadian singer returns with a genre-blending, deeply personal project exploring self-discovery amid pressure and uncertainty Jeon Somi is back after a year with her second EP, 'Chaotic & Confused' — a candid exploration of self-discovery found within moments of disorder and doubt. The singer first rose to fame in January 2016 on the large-scale survival project 'Produce 101,' where she finished first among 101 contestants. She debuted later that year as a member of the project group, I.O.I. After the group disbanded in early 2017, she signed a solo contract with JYP Entertainment but parted ways a year later without notable releases. In September 2018, she joined The Black Label, working under the guidance of esteemed producer Teddy to establish herself as a solo artist. Her new five-track EP marks what she calls a milestone — both musically and personally — capturing the pressure of being a solo performer nearly a decade into her career, despite still being only 24. 'This album reflects my current chaotic chapter,' Jeon said at a press interview in Seoul, Thursday. 'As always, I've shaped my music to mirror the situations I'm living through. Each track reflects something I can do best right now.' The lead single, 'Closer,' introduces a fresh genre experiment — stutter house — beginning with light, airy guitar riffs before bursting into a high-energy chorus. Its playful unpredictability mirrors the lyric 'a beautifully crooked dream,' which Jeon says reflects the search for herself amid uncertainty. ''Closer' was actually the last song I worked on for the album,' she said. 'I wanted a softer comeback this time, but still with a performance element fans would enjoy. Genre-wise, it allowed me to go deeper creatively.' The track samples Sean Kingston's 2007 hit 'Beautiful Girls,' though Jeon aimed to reimagine it in her own style. 'It's challenging to turn a well-known song into something original,' she said. 'But I feel 'Closer' blends old-school charm, today's house and techno trends, and my own voice perfectly.' The EP spans multiple styles — from the post-punk flair of 'Escapade' to the prerelease nu-disco and R&B single 'Extra,' the hybrid pop title track 'Chaotic & Confused' and the emotive R&B ballad 'Delu.' Jeon, who has been involved in the creation of all her releases, took an even larger role this time, contributing to songwriting, composing, visuals and performance concepts. Expanding her sound Teddy, founder and executive producer of The Black Label, and producer Vince both played key roles in shaping the record. Teddy, who recently co-wrote Blackpink's 'Jump,' is known for his meticulous approach. 'He finds sides of my voice I didn't know I had,' Jeon said. 'He reminds me that as a soloist, I have to fill the entire track on my own — and keep it engaging.' Vince, she added, brings a more relaxed style. 'He lets me record freely first, then gives feedback. I think he trusts me more now — even Teddy has let me work directly with him without oversight.' Vince also contributed to the 'KPop Demon Hunters'' hit soundtrack, including the Saja Boys' 'Your Idol,' which Jeon witnessed being produced in the studio. Asked if she ever wanted to claim a 'KPop Demon Hunters' track for herself, Jeon laughed. 'I used to feel that way, but now I believe the right songs come when the time is right. I focus on what fits me in the moment.' Looking ahead, Jeon says she wants to continue singing songs she can fully own in style, message and delivery. 'I think I have my own vocabulary and way of expressing things,' she said. 'I want to grow that and become a solo artist who competes on the quality of the music itself, while giving fans something exciting to see and hear every time.'

Twice's Chaeyoung to roll out 1st solo release next month
Chaeyoung of Twice will release her first solo endeavor on Sept. 12, label JYP Entertainment announced Friday. A short-form video showing her working on her first record — singing in a recording booth, having a discussion with Japnese pop band Gliiico and playing piano — was uploaded as well. She will be the fourth member of the Twice to have a solo outing, after Nayeon, Jihyo and Tzuyu. Her first step as a soloist comes amid blessings from 'Takedown,' which she sang with Jeongyeon and Jihyo for the soundtrack of Netflix hit animation film 'KPop Demon Hunters.' The single climbed up to No. 67 on Billboard's Hot 100 from last week's No. 76. Separately, the group will resume touring Japan on Aug. 23 in Nagoya for its ongoing world tour 'This Is For.'

JYP Entertainment ends contract with KG, rebrands VCHA as Girlset
Split follows months of dispute after KG's allegations of abuse, unhealthy work environment JYP Entertainment said Friday it has terminated its exclusive contract with American singer KG, who was a member of the agency's first global girl group VCHA — just a day after announcing the group's rebrand as Girlset. 'JYP America and KG Crown have mutually agreed to part ways as she concludes her journey with VCHA. Both parties sincerely wish each other all the best in their future endeavors,' JYP Entertainment said in a statement. JYP America is the North American branch of the K-pop powerhouse. On Thursday, the agency announced via social media that the multinational girl group would retire its previous name, VCHA, and continue its activities under the new name Girlset. KG left the group last year after alleging abuse by a JYP Entertainment staff member. The 17-year-old singer shared her grievances on Instagram in December, citing disapproval of 'the working conditions that led a member to attempt suicide.' 'Nor do I support an environment that encourages eating disorders and has caused members to self-harm,' she wrote. 'I do not blame anyone for the treatment endured, but feel this is an issue that lies deeply embedded in the K-pop industry.' The following day, JYP America said it would take strong action in response to KG's departure. The singer later filed a lawsuit against the company, alleging workplace mistreatment. 'We deeply regret KG's decision to file a lawsuit and make unilateral public statements containing false and exaggerated claims,' JYP USA said at the time. 'This action has caused significant harm to other members of VCHA and JYP USA, who have been working diligently on their upcoming album and projects for early 2025.' VCHA was formed as a joint project between JYP Entertainment and US music giant Republic Records, consisting of six finalists from 'A2K' (America2Korea), a girl group audition program run by the two companies from July to September 2023.
