Kyle Larson had to keep looking forward. Indiana was behind him—along with the heartbreak of missing the end of the Indianapolis 500. The much-hyped 'double' was no longer in play, but there were still 600 miles to run in Charlotte. A full workday behind the wheel. Focus forward. Try to salvage something.
But the night didn't get much better.
Larson rolled off second for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and quickly jumped to the lead by lap 9, as if the racing gods were offering him a shot at redemption. For a moment, it looked like a story straight out of Hollywood: heartbreak in Indy, triumph in Charlotte. The kind of thing that ends with slow-motion confetti and dramatic orchestral music.
What happened instead was more like a country song with a wrecked Chevy in the chorus.
On lap 36, Larson scraped the wall coming into Turn 3—nothing dramatic, just enough to rattle the sheet metal and let everyone know he was pushing. No lift, no hesitation. Because he's Kyle Larson, and that's what he does.

But Turn 4 had other ideas. On lap 43, with Larson leading and seemingly in control, the rear end stepped out and the No. 5 car skated sideways across the frontstretch grass like a hockey puck on a bad breakaway. To the naked eye, it looked cosmetic. But underneath, a broken toe link had turned a top-tier race car into a wounded animal.
The Hendrick Motorsports crew went into triage mode. Wrenches flew. Metal bent back into shape. Larson eventually rejoined the field, down but not out. He made up the lost laps and continued on, no longer a contender, but at least still in the race. If the win wasn't possible, maybe a finish was.
Then came lap 247.
Daniel Suárez, running three-wide on the bottom out of Turn 4, drifted up into Chase Briscoe, who then bumped into Ryan Blaney, who promptly bounced off the wall like a pinball. Suárez spun down across the frontstretch and into Justin Haley. Then into Larson. Again.
This time, there was no recovery.

'I don't know... I saw smoke and I tried to get left through the infield and I just didn't get far enough left,' Larson said after being released from the infield care center. 'I got tagged and it ended our night. Just a bummer of a day all around.'
It wasn't just the final crash—Larson had been fighting an uphill battle from early on.
'I just got super loose into Turn Three out of nowhere early in the race. I caught the wall and got some toe damage,' he explained. 'I thought the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet team did a great job in getting us back to where we were somewhat comfortable there the last 200 laps. We just needed to kind of chip away at it and I thought we could still end up OK.'
Ultimately, his effort to complete 1,100 miles of racing across two iconic tracks came to a premature end after 336 total laps—91 at Indianapolis, 245 at Charlotte.
'Just not the day that I wanted,' Larson said, 'but huge thanks to Rick and Linda Hendrick, all of Hendrick Motorsports, Arrow McLaren, Chevrolet, everybody involved in making the day memorable. It's just unfortunate, but hopefully we can run it back someday.'

Next-Gen Shelby GT500 Looks Menacing in New Spy Shots
Since the debut of the S650 Mustang in 2023, we've been waiting for a hardcore Shelby model. Rumors of the high-performance muscle car have been circulating for years, but nothing's been made official. That'll likely change soon, judging by these spy photos of a seemingly complete Shelby GT500 mule captured driving around Michigan. Our spy photographer managed to snag some detailed photos of this camouflaged GT500 prototype stalking around on the street ahead of a reveal likely to take place later this year. The front fascia wears a thick layer of netting and tarp to conceal changes to the front end, though we can see wider openings for the upper and lower grilles, as well as some outer bulges on the hood. The thin quad-exhaust pipes are clearly not production ready, while the wing looks to be lifted straight from the lesser Mustang GT . The wheels and tires are the most fascinating part of this tester. Look closely, and you'll see the tires measure 305/30ZR20 up front and 315/30ZR20 in the rear—coincidentally, these are the same exact sizes found on the last-generation GT500. The tires themselves are Pirelli P Zero Rs with "Prototype Use Only" text on the sidewalls. Unlike the last GT500 prototype we saw, this one isn't using carbon fiber wheels, but more traditional alloys. In all likelihood, this wheel and tire setup will likely be the base offering for the upcoming GT500, with a carbon fiber wheel and stickier tire offered as the sportier option. Photo by: KGP Photography There's no official word on what sort of engine will power the next GT500, but we have a pretty good idea of what to expect, thanks to a leaked union memo from the Dearborn engine plant in Michigan. The document, whose contents were confirmed by the Detroit Free Press through internal sources, showed plans to produce an engine nicknamed "Legend." The plant currently builds the supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 found in the Raptor R. That same motor powered the last GT500 , making 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. So it makes sense for the factory to supply the next car's engine, too. Power is still a question mark, though we wouldn't be surprised to see the next GT500 make over 800 hp, possibly matching the track-ready Mustang GTD . Judging by how ready-for-production this prototype looks, we probably won't have to wait much longer to find out. Bill Belichick Sets the Record Straight on Jordon Hudson's Responsibilities at North Carolina
North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick offered some clarity on his girlfriend's role with the Tar Heels. Belichick's move to the college ranks certainly created some excitement around the North Carolina program. The 73-year-old left the NFL as the league's second-all time coaching wins leader at 333 through 29 seasons. Advertisement However, the efforts to build UNC to national contention have been overlooked recently. Much has been made about 24-year-old Jordan Hudson's presence around the program after Belichick took over in January. Questions surrounding the relationship and the potential impact it is having on UNC have largely gone unanswered. Belichick cleared the air on the situation to former NFL defensive back and current ESPN analyst Ryan Clark on Friday. Belichick insisted that his focus is on football, and that Hudson's role has nothing to do with the program. "And some of the other opportunities that that come along, Jordan looks at those and can dig into them a little bit deeper. But really what she does helps me spend my time on football, and that's what's important to me." "Well, nothing with North Carolina," Belichick said. "That would be number one. It would be personal opportunities. Could be a a speaking thing. It could be an appearance on this, or talk about that, or somebody wants whatever it happens to be." Belichick went on to describe the email fiasco that made headlines in April. Those emails, which were made public, showed Belichick asking UNC leaders to copy Hudson on emails moving forward. "I sent back an email, 'Can you please copy Jordan on these requests?'" Belichick said. "So that she could at least filter through them because there was nobody. We didn't have a sports information guy. That was taken – because all the emails are shared publicly – that was taken as Jordan's run in the sports information department. I mean, there was nobody to help me sort them out. For as much off-field intrigue as the program has garnered in recent weeks with Belichick and Hudson in the spotlight, questions remain about the Tar Heels' on-field product ahead of their first season without coach Mack Brown in charge since 2018. 'Honestly, no one really has any idea what to expect on the field when they start this season,' an anonymous ACC assistant said in Athlon Sports' 2025 College Football Preview magazine. These comments were made in the Tar Heels' exclusive scouting report in Athlon's annual magazine, which is available for purchase online and at newsstands nationwide. There have been reports that North Carolina is not throwing around money in the same fashion that some other FBS programs are in the NIL era with revenue sharing on the horizon. 'There's talk about how they're going to become an advanced, pro-level scouting program that implements NIL better. We'll see. We do expect a better overall haul from these guys in high school recruiting than from Mack [Brown], at least until the novelty wears off or Bill gets a bad reputation.' It's fair to question whether Belichick's reputation already has taken a hit. And attention on him, Hudson and the Tar Heels will only ramp up in the lead-up to their Sept. 1 season opener against TCU when the Belichick era truly begins.
