Pochettino wants to bring American winning mentality to US soccer
The former Tottenham Hotspur boss has been tasked with leading the U.S. at the showpiece event to be co-hosted with Canada and Mexico, and while they have suffered some disappointments under Pochettino he says they are on the right track.
'We need to compete and create a team that can compete in the level that we expect,' the Argentine told the U.S. Soccer Podcast in an episode released on Wednesday.
'But I think little by little we're trying to evolve together and trying to understand what it means to defend and to play for a national team like the USA, that always requires from everyone the best.'
The U.S. were beaten by Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals in March, and lost Sunday's CONCACAF Gold Cup final against Mexico.
Pochettino knows there is an expectation for success.
'We're representing a country that always wants to be the best in every single thing that they are doing and that is why in soccer, we are responsible to create that mentality,' he added.
'We're in a process, it's still one year from the World Cup and in a very good process, and we're happy in the way things are going.'

PSB bars federations from competing in India without prior approval
The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has issued a fresh directive instructing all national sports federations to seek prior consultation and approval before participating in any sporting event held in India, citing prevailing security concerns. The decision was taken during the 34th meeting of the PSB Board held on July 23, 2025, PSB spokesperson Khuram Shahzad PSB told Business Recorder. A circular in this regard has also been issued, explicitly urging all national federations to strictly adhere to this directive. 'In view of the current security situation, no national federation shall make any commitment or agreement regarding participation in sports events in India without prior permission from PSB,' the circular reads. The development comes amid debate that whether Pakistan hockey team should travel to India for Men's Asia Cup Hockey tournament. Earlier this month, media reports suggested that Pakistan will not travel to India for upcoming hockey tournaments over 'security' concerns, potentially jeopardising their place in next year's World Cup. The nuclear-armed neighbours traded the worst violence in decades during a four-day conflict in May that killed 70 people. Pakistan was due to participate in the Men's Asia Cup for field hockey to be hosted by India in August and September, for which the federation had sought the government's clearance. 'After the recent war the security and safety of our hockey players will be at risk,' said a sports ministry source, who asked not to be identified. Pakistan will also not participate in the Junior World Cup in India in November, the source said. In May, national hockey team captain Imad Shakeel Butt had also called for the relocation of the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 from India, citing escalating political tensions between the two countries. 'The Asia Cup is crucial for us as it's a World Cup qualifying event. Given the current political situation between Pakistan and India, we believe the venue should be reconsidered,' he said.

Another tri-series on cards involving Pakistan

The series is likely to be played ahead of the T20 World Cup, a source within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed. Cricket Australia has a longstanding tradition of touring the subcontinent ahead of major ICC events to acclimatise properly. In 2021, Australia toured Bangladesh for a five-match T20I series and, similarly, played a Test and ODI series in Sri Lanka to prepare for the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. With India and Sri Lanka scheduled to host the mega event in February–March, Australia are set to play three T20Is against Pakistan. However, discussions are underway to convert the bilateral series into a tri-nation competition. According to local media, the PCB is eager to include Bangladesh in the series following improved bilateral relations between the two boards. It is expected that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will formally discuss the tri-nation proposal with BCB counterpart Aminul Islam Bulbul on the sidelines of the ACC meeting. Naqvi, who is also the ACC President, is currently in Dhaka for the ACC Annual General Meeting scheduled for July 24–25. If finalised, the series would feature seven matches, with each team playing the other two sides twice, followed by a final between the top two. Meanwhile, a similar initiative is in motion involving Pakistan's scheduled T20I series against Afghanistan. On July 5, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Chairman Mirwais Ashraf confirmed that talks are underway to transform the series into a tri-nation tournament, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the third team and host. Spain reach Euro 2025 final after 1-0 extra-time win over Germany
ZURICH: Spain's Aitana Bonmati struck a superb extra-time winner to fire her side to a 1-0 victory over Germany on Wednesday and send them through to the Women's European Championship final for the first time. The win set up a decider against holders England in Basel on Sunday in a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final that saw the Spaniards crowned world champions for the first time. Bonmati finally broke the deadlock in the 113th minute, picking up a ball in the left channel and spotting a gap left by Germany keeper Ann-Katrin Berger at the near post before whipping a shot from a tight angle into the net. Spain captain Irene Paredes struck the foot of a post with a first-half header as her side dominated possession, with the Germans building a solid block and inviting the Spaniards to attack while they attempted to strike on the counter. Germany winger Klara Buehl was impressive throughout, getting in behind the Spanish defence in the 63rd minute but shooting straight at keeper Cata Coll. With the Germans defending superbly, Spain struggled to break them down and they were almost caught out in stoppage time when Buehl had a deflected effort that Coll had to claw away, but the game ended scoreless, forcing extra time. The Germans, who came into the game with a record of nine wins in 10 previous Euro semi-finals, looked set to drag the match to penalties, but Bonmati had other ideas. '(I feel) proud. We deserve it. We've had a brutal championship. But we've also had a great tournament so far until today,' Bonmati said, acknowledging how tough it was to break the Germans down. 'Today we also suffered, of course, against Germany. It's the first time we've beaten Germany too, and for those who win at the end of the European Championship, what more could you ask for, right?' England fight back to down Italy in extra time and reach Euro 2025 final Berger, who was the hero of Germany's quarter-final shootout win over France, took responsibility for the goal that saw her side crash out of the tournament. 'I take the blame for that as well. The near post had to be covered, that's clear, and that's why I'm even more disappointed in myself,' she said. 'I can make as many saves as I want, but that goal should have simply been mine, and that's why I feel incredibly sorry, not even for myself, but for the team, because they really gave everything.'
