NCC ‘Summer Zone' returning for 2nd year at newly installed Dows Lake dock
The National Capital Commission's 'Summer Zone' will return this year with a change in location.
A floating dock that was installed earlier this month along the shoreline of Dows Lake across from Commissioner's Park will become home to the attraction this year.
'We expect to have lawn games, as well as food and beverage offerings near the dock's location, across from Commissioner's Park, beginning in June,' a spokesperson for the NCC said in an email to CTV News.
'For this year, taking into consideration construction impacts on the Queen Elizabeth Driveway, and the installation of the recreational dock, we decided to try out a new format and location.'
The Summer Zone was launched last year between Catherine Street and Somerset Street West on Queen Elizabeth Drive to celebrate the organization's 125th anniversary.
The NCC says it proved to be 'very popular with residents and visitors,' with more than 80,000 visits last year. The first edition featured sports, outdoor games, art classes and showcases, food and drink and live music.
A new recreational dock opened earlier this month near Lakeside Avenue with Muskoka chairs and bike racks available. The NCC says the dock will be used for launching kayaks and paddleboards, but has said it may open for swimming later this summer.
'The NCC is continuing to enhance the Dow's Lake shoreline with new amenities and activities, and these additions will help create a vibrant and welcoming waterfront experience,' the organization said.
Weekend Bike Days are returning this year but without 24-hour use on the QED. The road will be open for active use between Somerset Street to Fifth Avenue from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Last year, a section of the Driveway was reserved for active users 24 hours a day in July and August.
The Kichi Zībī Mīkan and the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway will also have certain sections open for active use on weekends and holidays.

‘Spotlight Celebration' showcases Sarah McLachlan School of Music in Vancouver
Friday was a big night for Canadian songwriting legend Sarah McLachlan and students at her Vancouver music school. Canadian music legend Sarah McLachlan and her eponymous school of music held their first-ever Spotlight Celebration in Vancouver Friday night. The event, which showcased some of the school's talented young musicians, was held to celebrate graduating students and the donor community that funds the school. In an interview with CTV News Vancouver before the concert at the school's Mount Pleasant building, McLachlan highlighted some of the key contributors to the school's mission. 'Part of the reason for the celebration tonight is donor appreciation and, in particular, Dona Wolverton and the Wolverton Foundation, who donated this incredible, 16,000-square-foot space to us, to the music school, for perpetuity, rent free, which is unbelievable,' McLachlan said. The musician has personally funded the school's administrative costs since it started, allowing for every donor dollar to support the school's free programming for underserved youth. In September, the school will enter its 24th year of operation. It has been in its current Vancouver location since 2011. 'I have a great sense of pride and joy and love for this place,' McLachlan said, recounting how she founded the organization in response to contracting public school music programs in Canada. 'For me, who grew up in a vibrant school music program and also had parents who could afford to pay for private music lessons, and knowing what music did for me and how it fed me and it saved me in so many ways, the idea of kids not having that opportunity just felt like a travesty to me.' From a starting point of a few hundred kids taking instrument lessons in a pilot project within the Vancouver-based non-profit Arts Umbrella, The Sarah McLachlan School of Music has grown to provide tuition-free music programs for 1,100 youth in Vancouver, Surrey and Edmonton each year. McLachlan described the school's current offerings as 'kid-focused' in a way music education sometimes isn't. 'You get to kind of try everything,' she said. 'You get to try all these different instruments and in second year you're already playing in a band and, you know, you're singing with someone else, you're doing songwriting, you're doing beatboxing … It's just an incredibly fun, safe, nurturing environment.'

Brockville Pride Parade takes place Saturday
The beginning of the 2025 Brockville Pride Parade on Saturday, June 7, 2025. (Jack Richardson/CTV News Ottawa). Brockville Pride is hosting its annual Pride Parade down King Street West in the city's downtown on Saturday afternoon to support members of the LGBTQ2S+ community in the area. At noon, over 30 groups representing different organizations and groups will walk through the streets of Brockville before wrapping up at Hardy Park. Brockville Pride began in 2011 - after a LGBTQ2S+ youth in the area took their own life - to raise awareness about the issues their community faces in a rural city. Chairperson Nicole Croteau says Brockville Pride has grown every year. 'Pride is more than just a celebration,' she said. 'Representation and having Pride in rural spaces is so important to show individuals that there is community here, that you belong here, and that there's just love to go around.' The parade is more of a conclusion to Pride Week in Brockville. It began Monday when the city raised a Pride flag on top of the Railway Tunnel, with potlucks, comedy shows, an LGBTQ2S+ Youth prom, and a Drag Competition.
