Severe weather forces diversion of Chennai-bound flights to Bengaluru
CHENNAI: Two commercial flights en route to Chennai were diverted to Bengaluru on Friday, as adverse weather conditions disrupted evening air traffic at Chennai International Airport.
IndiGo flight 6E6486, operated on an Airbus A321, was originally scheduled to arrive in Chennai from Hyderabad at 8:15pm. Similarly, Air India Express flight IX2822, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, also on the Hyderabad-Chennai route, had a scheduled arrival time of 9:05pm.
Both aircraft were rerouted mid-flight and landed at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru instead, according to airport sources.
Similarly, IndiGo 6E209, an Airbus A320 vaircraft, which had been scheduled to arrive in Chennai from Ranchi at 9.15pm was also diverted to Bengaluru.

A Ranchi-bound IndiGo flight made an emergency landing at Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport on Monday after being hit by a vulture at around 4,000 feet altitude, an official said, as quoted by PTI. He added that all the passengers and crew members in the aircraft are safe. However, the incident that occurred at 1.14 pm, caused some damages to the aircraft — Airbus 320. "An IndiGo flight suffered a bird hit near Ranchi. It was approximately 10 to 12 nautical miles away from here at an altitude of 3,000 to 4,000 feet when the incident occurred. The IndiGo flight was coming from Patna to Ranchi, and the pilot had to make an emergency landing here," R R Mourya, director of Birsa Munda Airport, told PTI. The aircraft was later scheduled to go to Kolkata, another official said. The incident comes a day after an IndiGo flight from Raipur to Delhi encountered severe turbulence due to a sudden dust storm as it approached the national capital's Indira Gandhi International Airport, eventually forcing the pilot to abort landing at the last minute. The pilot said that the wind speed was upto 80 km per hour, therefore he discontinued the approach and climbed back until the weather cleared. Similarly, on May 21, another IndiGo flight from Delhi to Srinagar faced extreme turbulence due to a hailstorm, resulting in visible damage to the aircraft's nose. The flight was denied permission to divert into Pakistani airspace to evade thunderstorms, and it made an emergency landing at the Srinagar airport.

The pilot declared an emergency and alerted Srinagar Air Traffic Control. The plane landed safely at 6:30 pm, according to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). All passengers and crew were unharmed. The airline later declared the aircraft "AOG" (Aircraft on Ground), indicating it was grounded for technical checks. Social media videos from the Srinagar flight showed the plane swaying as passengers recited religious prayers.

An IndiGo flight from Raipur to Delhi experienced turbulence due to a duststorm, prompting the pilot to climb up again when the aircraft was about to touch down at Delhi airport. Flight 6E 6313 landed safely at Delhi airport after making many circles in the air. The video of the incident also went viral on social media. The pilot announced that the wind speed was upto 80 km/hrs, and he discontinued the approach and climbed back till the weather cleared. Meanwhile, the national capital on Sunday (June 1, 2025) witnessed a spell of rain, accompanied by strong winds over the southern parts of Delhi. The rains are due to an east-southeastward-moving cloud cluster, according to the Meteorological Department. The spell of rain offered a much-needed respite from the heat, as the national capital recorded maximum temperatures of more than 39 C earlier in the morning. According to IMD, Safdarjung area recorded a maximum temperature of 39.7 degrees Celsius, Ayanagar 39.5 degrees Celsius, Lodhi Road 39.4 degrees Celsius and Palam recording 39.1 degrees Celsius. The IMD has issued warnings of thunderstorms, lightning and squall for the next two days, on June 2-3, in the national capital. The IMD has issued warnings on the nowcast for atleast 8 districts, including South, South East, New Delhi, East, Central, Sahadara, North East. The Met Department has said that the winds could reach up to 80 kmph too. Meanwhile, South West, West and North West Districts have been issued an advisory to watch out for light rains, thunderstorms and lightning.
