Perseids meteor shower peaks tonight with 100 meteors per hour

KUALA LUMPUR: The Perseids meteor shower will reach its peak intensity late tonight into early tomorrow morning, with up to 100 meteors potentially visible per hour.
The Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) confirmed the annual celestial event, which occurs between July and August, can be observed without telescopes in areas free from light pollution.
However, MYSA noted that visibility in Malaysia may be affected by the bright waning gibbous moon, which could reduce the number of visible meteors.
The agency advised stargazers to select open, dark locations and allow their eyes 15 to 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness for optimal viewing.
Unlike typical stargazing, observers should avoid focusing solely on the Perseus constellation as meteors may appear from various directions across the sky.
The Perseids occur when Earth passes through debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which has a 26-kilometre-wide nucleus and orbits the Sun every 133 years.
MYSA explained that comet particles entering Earth's atmosphere burn up, creating the characteristic glowing streaks across the night sky.
The comet last approached Earth in 1992 and is expected to make its next close pass in 2126. – Bernama

Geespace Adds 11 Satellites To GEESATCOM For Global IoT Expansion

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Geespace, a Chinese commercial aerospace company, has announced the completion of the fourth orbital deployment of GEESATCOM, known as the Geely Constellation, launching 11 satellites from waters off Rizhao, Shandong Province, aboard a single rocket. According to a statement, the constellation has grown from 30 to 41 satellites in a 600-kilometre orbit and is expected to reach 64 satellites within two months, enabling seamless real-time global data coverage, excluding the polars. The GEESATCOM, which is independently developed and operated by Geespace, enables satellite Internet of Things (IoT) testing and inter-satellite communications for applications such as emergency communications, transportation and logistics, public infrastructure, and animal husbandry.

Malaysia, ASEAN Members Work Closely To Advance Safe, Regulated Nuclear Technology

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 14 (Bernama) – Malaysia has been working closely with ASEAN member countries to strengthen regional cooperation to ensure the safe, secure, and regulated use of nuclear technology in the region. Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal said various initiatives, including capacity-building programmes, technical exchanges, and strategic collaborations, have strengthened regional preparedness and resilience against emerging challenges. 'None of these achievements would have been possible without your (ASEAN members') longstanding support and collaboration,' he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the 12th Annual Meeting of ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (ASEANTOM) here today. Also present were Atom Malaysia director-general Noraishah Pungut and Philippine Nuclear Research Institute director Dr Carlo Abundo Arcilla. Mohammad Yusof said Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEANTOM this year, remains fully committed to ASEANTOM's shared goals and will continue to contribute actively as a dedicated member. He said this is in line with the official theme for Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', under which Malaysia will ensure that no one is left behind and that every ASEAN citizen benefits from the region's progress and sustainability. 'While promoting development that safeguards our environment and ensures long-term prosperity for generations to come, may our continued collaboration also pave the way for a safer, more innovative, and sustainable future for all,' he said. Mohammad Yusof also stressed that the spirit of unity, trust, and cooperation that defines ASEAN and the ASEANTOM must continue so that the peace and prosperity of the region can be maintained. Earlier, at the closing ceremony of the meeting, Malaysia officially handed over the chairmanship of ASEANTOM to the Philippines, marking the end of its term as chair.
