LABUAN: Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said the relevant ministry or agency should clear the air on the tender process for the demolition of the derelict Hotel Labuan since a local contractor had lodged a report on alleged irregularities and possible political interference in the process. Adding that the contractor took the right step in reporting the complaint to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Wong said: 'It is puzzling why a qualified local contractor with all the required necessary CIDB (Construction Industry Development Board) certification and licence and submitted a lower bid for the job was sidelined. MACC calls 61 witnesses in MEX II project probe
KOTA BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has summoned 61 witnesses in its ongoing investigation into the Maju Expressway (MEX II) extension project. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the matter and said all the witnesses in question had been called recently. He said the amount of property seized involving a Tan Sri also remained the same as previously announced. "I have given my officers a maximum of two months to complete the investigation papers for this case and I believe that the investigation papers will be completed in less than two months to be submitted to the DPP (Deputy Public Prosecutor)," he said. Azam said this at a press conference after witnessing the handover ceremony of the new Kelantan MACC director Azmin Yusoff and the former director, Rosli Husain, here today. On May 29, various assets including luxury vehicles, jewellery, designer handbags and cash worth RM32 million were seized from a Tan Sri who is being investigated by the MACC over false claims and misuse of loan bonds for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley. According to sources, all the luxury items were seized by MACC Investigation Division investigating officers after raiding two of the Tan Sri's residences located in the capital. The 18-kilometre MEX II Highway project began construction in 2016 and was supposed to be completed in December 2019. It is planned to connect Putrajaya to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Last month, Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi was reported to have said the government was working with all stakeholders to resolve the delay in MEX II, which was allegedly stalled due to financial problems. - Bernama

'Datuk' remanded in RM75mil money laundering probe
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a company director bearing the title "Datuk", suspected of involvement in money laundering activities amounting to approximately RM75 million. A four-day remand order, until July 6, was issued by magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin following an application by the MACC at the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court earlier this morning. According to sources, the male suspect, in his 50s, was detained at about 4pm yesterday when he presented himself at the MACC headquarters to give a statement. "The suspect is believed to have committed the offence in 2012, involving the approval of RM400 million in loan financing for a fibre network development project. "Initial investigations suggest that RM75 million from the amount was channelled to a company owned by the suspect," the source said. On June 30, MACC's Special Operations Division carried out raids at four separate locations, including the suspect's residence and office in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. "During the operation, the MACC froze 12 bank accounts, both personal and corporate, estimated to contain about RM400,000," the source added. Meanwhile, MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, when contacted, confirmed the suspect's arrest. The case is being investigated under offences related to the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLA) 2001.

MyKiosk probe: No criminal elements, MACC focusing on governance issues, says Azam Baki

"There has been a misunderstanding in the media suggesting we are investigating a criminal case. We have conducted a preliminary investigation and found no criminal elements, but we are now focusing on governance issues, if any, in order to provide recommendations to the ministry for improvement. However, the matter is not yet concluded," he said. Azam said this at a press conference after witnessing the handover of duties between the new Kelantan MACC director Azmin Yusoff and his predecessor Rosli Husain here Thursday (July 3). He added that the MACC took into account the report from MCA Youth as well as input received from ministry itself, and the ministry had cooperated well in the investigation. On Wednesday (July 2), the MACC began investigations into allegations of corruption and misappropriation involving the MyKiosk construction tender by the ministry. Meanwhile, commenting on the investigation involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Azam said the MACC would apply to the court to forfeit assets worth RM170mil that had been seized. "If he (Ismail Sabri) challenges this in court, then the trial will proceed, and if the forfeiture is successful, the money will become government revenue. That is the decision made by the Public Prosecutor at this time," he said. Previously, the former prime minister had been called in several times for statement recording sessions regarding the declaration of assets he made to the MACC under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009. The Bera MP is also being investigated for corruption and money laundering involving the expenditure and procurement of funds for the promotion and publicity of the Keluarga Malaysia programme during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022. The case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. - Bernama
