Rival Big Ten football coach inks long-term contract extension

USA Today7 days ago
The boat will continue to row up north in Minnesota. PJ Fleck, the head coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, has signed a contract extension that will keep him locked up long-term.
The border rival of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Golden Gophers, extended PJ Fleck through 2030 with his new deal that was just recently signed. The extension was locked into place in early July by the Board of Regents.
Fleck has been at just two FBS programs during his time as a head coach since 2013. He spent 2013-2016 with the Western Michigan Broncos, where he parlayed a 13-1 season and a Cotton Bowl trip into a head coaching job at Minnesota. He was 30-22 at Western Michigan.
He joined Minnesota in 2017 and owns a career record of 56-39 with a Big Ten record of 33-36. The Gophers have ended the year with a winning record in five of Fleck's eight seasons.
Iowa meets Minnesota annually for the Floyd of Rosedale trophy, a big, bronze pig that resides with the winner each year. Since taking over at Minnesota, Iowa has had Fleck's number. PJ Fleck owns just a 1-7 record against the Hawkeyes, with his only win coming in the extremely controversial ruling of Cooper DeJean's punt return fiasco.

'No one is talking about them' SEC analyst is high on Texas A&M in 2025

Texas A&M's SEC media days appearance will take place on Thursday at 2:45 p.m. as coach Mike Elko and his three player representatives, linebacker Taurean York, guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams, and cornerback Will Lee III, will speak to the media for the first and final time before the start of fall camp early next month. Still, even before Elko takes the podium, a long list of college football media figures had plenty to say regarding the Aggies' "dark horse" status as one of the more underrated teams nationally. Thanks to the TexAgs Live show, host David Nuno and Billy Liucci have conducted several intriguing interviews with well-known CFB broadcasters, including Jordan Rodgers. Rodgers, who played quarterback at Vanderbilt and is the brother of future Hall of Famer quarterback Aaron Rodgers, was asked who his "SEC sleeper" is with less than 45 days to go before the start of the 2025 season. With 16 options, Rodgers quickly chose Texas A&M, which he believes is a potential sleeping giant that could surprise everyone this fall. "No one is talking about them" Rodgers stated. "They are extremely talented. The backfield is loaded. A&M will surprise some people." Yes, the hype is real, and I'll be the first to deny that those of us in the Texas A&M media sphere have echoed this sentiment during the offseason, outside of noting the Aggies' strengths on both sides of the ball. Because of the way the 2024 season ended with three consecutive losses, it's fair that some feel the team doesn't have what it takes to withstand a tough schedule, but it's also important to note that nearly every key player from the 2026 campaign has returned, paired with 14 additions from the transfer portal. Rodgers isn't the first, and won't be the last media member to hype up the Aggies as the season grows closer, but he's 100% on point that this roster is highly talented, and loaded at running back headlined by senior Le'Veon Moss, who averaged over six yards per carry before his season-ending injury halfway through the 2024 season. Redshirt sophomore QB Marcel Reed will be the focus once the season begins, but the Tennessee native does not need to play at an elite level for Texas A&M to win nine, or possible ten games if the run game and veteran offensive line lives up to its hefty preseason expecations, while the defense is expected to also improve with Elko now calling defensive plays. 5-star Ohio State football priority running back target sets new commitment date

The Ohio State football program is looking to put the finishing touches on its 2026 recruiting class, and there's one huge 5-star running back target it would love to land. Out of the same school as Jeremiah Smith, Chaminade-Madonna, Derek Cooper will announce his commitment on Sunday, July 20 at 7 p.m. ET. Cooper had his commitment date set originally for July 12, but postponed it and now appears ready to announce where he'll play college. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Cooper is ranked as the No. 2 athlete and 29th overall prospect in the class. Though he is listed as an athlete, he'll be a running back when he straps on the helmet in college, and the Buckeyes hope it's a silver one. If Ohio State is to land the blue-chip talent, it'll have to win out over Florida State, Georgia, Miami (FL), and Texas. And, to be honest, it'll be a bit of an upset for the Florida native to stray too far from home. He is considered a Hurricane lean, but that hasn't seemed to matter these days with NIL and all of that. Regardless, one can hope. OSU lost one of its commitments on Wednesday, and it would be great to land one of the best players in the country to get some more momentum for a class that currently sits in the top ten but has had several losses recently on the recruiting trail. Teddy Bridgewater Suspended From HS Coaching Job For Buying Players Uber Rides & Food, Social Media Upset

Source: Michael Reaves / Getty Teddy Bridgewater did the right thing after his 10-year NFL career, as he returned to his high school football team to help the next generation fulfill their dreams, but now he's being penalized for it. The one-time Pro Bowler has been fired from his head coaching job at his alma mater, Miami Northwestern Senior High School, for allegedly violating Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) rules regarding 'impermissible benefits.' According to Sports Illustrated , he reportedly spent $70,000 of his own money to ensure his players had what they needed throughout the season. The staggering amount he spent on the boys wasn't a secret and was something he shared on Facebook earlier this month when he asked for donations from the community to help pitch in so he'd ' no longer have to take from my personal funds to keep smiles on these young men face and remind them that they matter.' In the lengthy post, he discusses spending $700 a week on Uber rides, $1,500 a week on catered meals, $9,500 on pride uniforms, $14,000 on a training camp, and $1,300 a week on recovery trucks. So, h e's asking for the community to donate to the team through his Be Bridge Foundation. He ends the message with, 'These are all things I choose to do on my own and are not requirements for the boys to have according to the rule makers and those who make the decisions at MNW.' Once Bridgewater was made aware of the suspension, he immediately took to social media, blaming Associate Head Coach Verne Louis. He also stated that a suspension is technically not possible because he's not an actual employee of the school. 'Damn people done caused all this confusion. Got a phone call tonight and it's no real investigation going on.. I told you I have to be an employee to be investigated. Now the paperwork thing still stands but there was no investigation… We SELF REPORTED,' he wrote on social media. 'Verne and his Administrative homeboys want me gone apparently and tried to hire one of my dawgs like bro wasn't gone lace me up… The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you. So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE.' He also doesn't plan on leaving the program, saying he'll 'volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' Social media is upset that a rule intended to prevent wealthy schools from negatively influencing students is being enforced, despite Bridgewater's intentions being pure. See the reactions below.
