E-khata chaos: Helplines of no help, property owners in Bengaluru at their wits' end
Bengaluru: Flat owners, already caught in BBMP's e-khata chaos, have a new headache: Navigating the civic body's own helplines. Instead of offering solutions, the helplines and officials are trapping e-khata holders in a maddening loop that ends with nothing. Take the case of its much-publicised helpline number 1533 or WhatsApp number 9480683695. For citizens struggling with discrepancies in parking lot dimensions, these helplines are supposed to provide relief. But, not so in reality. Anand Kumar, a senior citizen from Kanakapura Road, said: "I wanted to file objections and contacted the local BBMP revenue official, but he told me to approach special commissioner Munish Moudgil in the BBMP head office. When I went to the central office at Hudson Circle, I was told to call the BBMP helpline. Initially, the helplines did not work. When someone finally answered, I was again redirected to the local revenue official. I am only going around in circles with no solution at sight." At 1.25pm, the reporter dialled 1533. In the second attempt, the reporter pressed 1, but the loop continued until the call was dropped again. The entire sequence was recorded on video. Later, at 4:57pm, the e-khata helpline (9480683695) was tried. A recorded message asked the caller to "hold the line" as the line was busy. After waiting nearly seven minutes, the call disconnected automatically. A second attempt at 5:21pm met with the same fate. Residents say this is not an isolated glitch but a persistent failure. "It's impossible to get through. I've tried more than 20 times in the last week," said Shalini Rao, a resident of JP Nagar. She added, "Even if you're lucky enough to connect, you either get disconnected midway or are stuck in endless loops." Ramesh Gowda from Yelahanka, a sports teacher at a private school, recounted a similar experience: "I needed to clarify a mismatch in my property details. The helpline was my first option, but after repeated failures, I had to take half-a-day's leave to go to the revenue office, where I was told to come back another day because the official concerned was busy." With citizens' frustration mounting, civic activists said BBMP must urgently overhaul its grievance-redress system. "A helpline that doesn't connect is worse than no helpline at all — it erodes public trust," said Vinod Kumar, member of a residents' welfare association. A senior revenue official said, "We are a team of 12 and each of us gets almost 100 calls daily, how can we answer all? We are trying our best to help, but if citizens are at fault and they keep pressing the panic button, we cannot do anything." DK sees 108 new schools in the last five years
Mangaluru: While govt-aided and a few unaided schools in Dakshina Kannada received zero admissions, leading to the closure of these institutions, the district has been approving a substantial number of new schools each academic year. Data reveals that from 2020-21 to 2025-26, the district approved a total of 108 schools. All of these are aided and unaided institutions. Interestingly, many of the 108 approved schools belong to minorities. Govinda Madivala, DDPI, Dakshina Kannada, explained that in the academic year 2025-26 alone, a total of 24 new schools were approved to start or upgrade their schools. "The total number of applications received every year is increasing, and this year alone, more than 36 applications were received," he said, adding that to start a school, a total of 28 requirements need to be met. Sources from the department of school education and literacy said that among the 108 schools, many were given permission to start new schools with a primary section, whereas the rest were to upgrade from existing primary schools to grades six to eight, and others to start a secondary section. "A majority of the new schools were started in Mangaluru, North and South, Bantwal, Puttur, and Belthangady BEO limits. There is significant demand for private English medium schools in rural areas of the district," said an official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Serbia Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. Intel, Lockheed Martin among companies investing in India's semiconductor push
NEW DELHI: Strengthening India's efforts in attaining self-sufficiency in the critical semiconductor segment, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved four semiconductor projects, entailing a total investment of Rs 4,594 crore, with one of them being backed by US chipmaker Intel as well as defence and aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The projects will come up in Odisha, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh, IT & Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The proposals were approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, which initially started the country's semiconductor manufacturing push with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore to provide financial support for those setting up chip manufacturing facilities. 'This is a new industry that we have started in India, and we were able to make a breakthrough after trying for decades previously. We will build upon this. The demand for semiconductors is building up every month, every day. And the way these projects are being set up and are scaling up, I think we will be able to have significant production in our country as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme. To me, it appears that this is just the beginning,' Vaishnaw said while briefing about the new projects and also those that started previously. The minister said that a silicon carbide semiconductor plant will be set up in Bhubaneswar with an investment of Rs 2,066 crore by SiCsem Pvt Ltd. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Ukraine Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. Silicon carbide is used in our missiles, satellites, telecom towers, rockets, railway engines, etc.' The plant will have a capacity to produce 9.6 crore chips per year. The Cabinet also approved US chip major Intel-backed 3D Glass semiconductor manufacturing unit in Odisha with an investment of Rs 1,943 crore. The plant will be set up by Heterogenous Integration Packaging Solutions with an annual production capacity of five crore units. Vaishnaw said the project will be backed by US firm Lockheed Martin as well. It is understood that the two American companies have invested in the project for sourcing the production, and also as part of their financial investment plans. A chip packaging plant in Andhra Pradesh, to be set up by Advanced System in Package Technologies with an investment of Rs 468 crore, was also approved by the Cabinet. It will have a capacity to produce 9.6 crore chips per year. The cabinet also cleared a semiconductor project of electronics component maker firm CDIL. The facility will be set up in Punjab with an investment of Rs 117 crore, having an annual production capacity of 15.8 crore units. Vaishnaw said the plans for semiconductor come at a time when the country's electronics manufacturing sector has grown six times to Rs 12 lakh crore in the last 11 years. Exports of electronics has grown eight times in the same period to Rs 3.3 lakh crore and mobile production has increased 28 times to Rs 5.5 lakh crore. The minister said India will host Semicon India 2025 in partnership with four countries-- Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Korea from September 2 to 4. There has been considerable success in development of semiconductor ecosystem in India after the central govt had come up with a Rs 76,000 crore incentive package in December 2021. Under the plan, govt had extended fiscal support of up to 50% of a project's cost to eligible display and semiconductor fabricators. India – which had previously failed to get any credible proposals for semiconductor manufacturing after trying for decades – had finally managed to score big when American Micron emerged as the first major player to enter the space with a Rs 22,500 crore testing and packaging unit in Gujarat in June 2023. This was followed up with approval to three proposals worth Rs 1.26 lakh crore in February 2024. These were -- Rs 91,000 crore project of Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd to set up India's first semiconductor fab unit with Taiwanese Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp at Dholera in Gujarat; Rs 27,000 crore Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT) unit by Tata in Morigaon, Assam; and Rs 7,600 crore project of CG Power with Japanese Renesas Electronics and Stars Microelectronics of Thailand.
