iOS 26 public beta now available, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, and watchOS 26 too
We're talking about iOS 26, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, and even HomePod Software 26. Why 26? Because next year is 2026, and all of these will be released to the wider public in September of 2025. No, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but at least it makes all of the different OSes have the same version number, which makes them easier to keep track of, we'd say.
The main new thing in all of these is Apple's new design language, called Liquid Glass - Windows Vista fans rejoice! While of course there are many big differences, it's undoubtedly been inspired by the revolutionary (at the time) Windows release, and the idea is the same - transparency everywhere.
That said, the level of transparency has been toned down in some UI parts since the first developer beta came out, after some public outcry related to legibility (or lack thereof).
If you're going the beta route, please keep in mind that these aren't going to be perfectly smooth builds - bugs can and will arise, and things may break here and there. Thus, we wouldn't really recommend running such a beta on a device that you need to be reliable 24/7. Useful Google Maps feature mysteriously disappears and returns. What to do next time it happens
Google has worked hard to make Google Maps easy to use while still stuffing plenty of useful information into the app. For example, let's say you're on the road and you need to find a gas station pronto. You may have just noticed that the gauge in your vehicle is about to be pinned to the "E." Or, if that isn't harrowing enough, nature is calling and you need a place to answer that call. Typing the word "Gas" into the Google Maps search bar at the top of the display on Android and iOS devices will show you where gas stations are located near you. It also includes the name of the gas station, the price of gas there, and whether it is open or closed. Tap on the red dot indicating the presence of a particular station, and a pop-up screen appears from the bottom covering about half of the display. This screen shows the name of the station, how far away you are from it, and even shows photos of the place. Typing Gas on the Google Maps app will show you nearby gas stations and give you directions to them. | Image credit-PhoneArena More importantly, it gives you a directions button allowing you, with one more tap, to get turn-by-turn directions to the place where you can fill up your car with gas and/or empty your bladder. This feature can be a lifesaver at a time when no driver is at his or her best. You're waiting for your car to start sputtering out, or you feel as though your bladder will explode. With your attention diverted to one or both of these things, you're not concentrating on the road as you should be. So yes, this is a feature that you'd hate to see disappear for no reason, which is something that Google is wont to do from time to time. However, according to some posts on Reddit, last week, Google removed the feature from Android phones while leaving it on iOS. One Redditor typed, "When I look up 'gas' on Google Maps, it used to show me gas stations along with the price of gas in each station. However, it seems to have stopped showing the price of gas since today on both my cell phone as well as Google Maps on a desktop web browser." Some Android users were tying this in to the installation of the latest version of Google Maps. However, this is a server-side feature, which means that the version of Google Maps shouldn't matter, and it is up to Google to flip the switch and stop this helpful tool from appearing on certain Android devices. Complaints about the disappearance of the "Gas" tool came from Canada and the U.S. (Las Vegas and the New England area of the States). Then there was the question of whether the disappearance of the feature was a bug or something that Google did on purpose. It appears that 12 hours after Android users running the Google Maps app first started noticing that typing "Gas" into the app failed to bring up the desired information, the feature started working again. Considering that there haven't been other complaints posted on Reddit about this, I think we can safely assume that this was a short-term scare for Google Maps users on Android. But should this happen again, you might want to consider installing a dedicated app that will help you find the closest gas station. The best one I've found is GasBuddy which can be loaded on both Android and iOS devices. The upcoming iPhone Fold screen sizes leak
Apple is rumored to be finally stepping into the foldable smartphone game next year - we'll be calling its first such device the iPhone Fold but don't take this for granted, we don't really know the name yet. Today in China, the prolific leaker who goes by Digital Chat Station on Weibo has revealed the iPhone Fold's screen sizes. The inner, folding display is allegedly going to be 7.7", while the cover screen will be 5.5". That implies quite a different aspect ratio from what we're used to in the Android world. It's definitely not going to be the biggest book-style foldable around, that's for sure, but Apple will undoubtedly emphasize its better pocketability and usability with one hand in its marketing materials. DCS also once again confirms the 2026 release of the device. Past rumors have claimed that the device has already entered prototype testing, with a functioning prototype already created. It may or may not sport an under-display selfie camera for the folding screen, but has been consistently rumored to have a practically crease-free design. Intel overplayed its hand and now it wants to rebuild
Intel has been through the wringer lately. First, Apple dropped its chips in favor of the M-series. Then AMD started chipping away at its lead in the PC space. And now Arm-based rivals and AI giants like Nvidia are piling on the pressure. The result? A company that's lost serious ground and is now being forced to reinvent itself – its latest earnings report for Q2 2025, Intel revealed a massive shake-up that makes one thing very clear: this isn't just a rough patch. It's a full-blown new CEO Lip-Bu Tan, Intel is slashing costs and cutting loose anything that doesn't serve its core mission. That means thousands of jobs are being cut, major manufacturing projects are being scrapped or delayed and the company is slimming down to focus on fewer, smarter ended 2024 with nearly 110,000 employees. By the end of 2025, it expects to be down to just 75,000. That's roughly a quarter of the company – gone.
