Renato Moicano explains why UFC declined his request to fight Justin Gaethje at UFC 313
Renato Moicano revealed that he was contacted to step in against Justin Gaethje at UFC 313.
Gaethje (25-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) needed a new opponent two weeks out from UFC 313 when Dan Hooker withdrew due to a fractured hand. Moicano (20-6-1 MMA, 12-6 UFC) put his hand up, and the UFC reached out to him, but they couldn't come to an agreement.
Gaethje will now run things back with Rafael Fiziev (12-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPNews/Disney+, ESPN+).
'Just to clarify, people were saying that I run from the fight,' Moicano said on his 'Show Me The Money' podcast. 'But to be honest, UFC messaged me and I said, 'Hey, I am 190 (pounds). We can do a catchweight.' But they didn't want a catchweight, so it is what it is. Just that, and I think Gaethje will beat Fiziev – but that's a very competitive fight and that's a very good fight to watch again.'
Moicano was recently called out by Nasrat Haqparast, who edged out Esteban Ribovics at UFC Fight Night 253 this past Saturday. The Brazilian is coming off a one-day notice title-fight loss to lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 311.
'Easy money. Are you kidding me, brother? Of course,' Moicano said. 'If they want to make that fight, I would fight next week. Are you crazy? I just thought that was funny because the guy almost lost and then he's calling people out.
'Motherf*cker got a split decision and is calling names? Easy money. I'm not trying to be disrespectful. He called me out and if the UFC wants to make that fight, I would take it 100 percent.'

Joaquin Buckley not deterred by UFC loss to Kamaru Usman, will be 'one of the greats' Show Caption Hide Caption Who's next for Joaquin Buckley after Kamaru Usman loss? MMA Junkie's Mike Bohn plays matchmaker and looks ahead to what makes sense for Joaquin Buckley Joaquin Buckley is not broken by his defeat to Kamaru Usman at UFC on ESPN 69 and still intends to put together a legendary career. Buckley (22-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC) suffered his first defeat since dropping to the welterweight division Saturday when he was outworked by former champion Usman (21-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC) en route to a unanimous decision loss at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Prior to the encounter with Usman, he had put together a 6-0 run in the division that included notables such as Vicente Luque, Stephen Thompson and Colby Covington. He didn't have the necessary answers to thwart Usman's offensive grappling, though, and now he's dealing with the aftermath of a tough night at the office. Buckley issued his first statement since the fight Sunday, claiming Usman was "more concerned about holding me than hurting me" in the octagon and stating he still intends to become "one of the greats" in UFC history (via Instagram): Hand wasn't raised last night but I am still victorious and will be one of the greats ☝️ This trip has been beyond amazing and I wouldn't change a thing that happened in my fight camp everything was perfectly planned I just didn't execute like I know I could… we wanted to land early damage on Usman and get him moving back but he did a good job neutralizing threats with takedowns But don't get it twisted usman was more concerned about holding me than hurting me in this fight but he did what he felt was necessary to win and so can't be mad at him Congrats to @usman84kg and his Team and @francisngannou I saw message 🫡Excited about the welterweight divisionSee ya when I see ya 👋

Report: Australian guard Ben Henshall to withdraw from 2025 NBA draft
Report: Australian guard Ben Henshall to withdraw from 2025 NBA draft NEWS: Australian guard Ben Henshall will withdraw from the NBA draft, agent Sam Rose told ESPN. The 6'6 combo guard will evaluate NCAA and professional options for next season. Averaged 9.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists for the Perth Wildcats in the NBL this season. — Jonathan Givony (@DraftExpress) June 14, 2025 Australian guard Ben Henshall is reportedly withdrawing from the 2025 NBA draft and weighing his options for next season, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN. Henshall averaged 9.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.1 steals on 33.3% shooting from 3-point range in 35 games last season with the Perth Wildcats in the NBL. He scored in double figures 20 times, including a season-high 28 points and six assists on Nov. 1. The 6-foot-6 standout competed in the combine last month, averaging eight points and three rebounds in two scrimmages in Chicago, Illinois. He also completed predraft workouts with the Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings. Henshall registered the fastest lane agility time at the combine (10.49 seconds) and was tied for the fifth-fastest in the three-quarter sprint (3.07 seconds). He also shot 48.1% combined (26 of 54) in the 3-point star and corner shooting drills. The 20-year-old was considered a possible second-round pick or undrafted free agent in the draft this year. He is highly touted as a scorer who can finish at all three levels and for his ability to affect games on the defensive end of the court. Henshall is now expected to weigh his options, either at the international level or in the NCAA. He should be a player to watch as a possible draft pick in the 2026 NBA draft.
