Rupali Ganguly highlights Modi's role in breaking menstrual taboos in India

Hans India2 days ago

Actress Rupali Ganguly has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for addressing menstrual hygiene on national platforms and helping break long-standing taboos surrounding the subject in India.
Drawing attention to the importance of accessible sanitary products and menstrual education, Rupali emphasised how the Prime Minister's efforts have sparked meaningful conversations and brought much-needed awareness, especially in rural areas where such topics are often stigmatised or ignored.
The 'Anupamaa' actress cited PM Modi's landmark speech from the Red Fort where he addressed the issue of menstrual health. Highlighting the implementation of affordable sanitary pad distribution and hygiene education, Rupali noted that these measures have had a significant impact on young girls who often drop out of school due to lack of awareness or access to proper menstrual care. She pointed out that while women in urban areas may take sanitary pads for granted, the situation is vastly different in remote parts of India where such essentials are still considered a luxury.
The 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai' actress shared, 'I feel very proud, because sanitary hygiene, for me as a woman, is not a taboo topic. Modi ji is probably the first leader—world leader—who talked about menstrual hygiene from the Red Fort. And sanitary pads—affordable sanitary pads—reaching every woman, that was a matter of great pride for me. As a woman, I felt proud. There are so many girls who drop out of school because they don't have knowledge about menstrual hygiene. So many girls drop out—some are ashamed, some don't know how to use cloth properly.'
'So, giving them sanitary pads it may sound like a small thing, but it is a big thing. We women living in cities take these things for granted. You go and buy a sanitary pad, that's it. But for a rural woman, for a child growing up in the interiors of rural India, having access to sanitary pads is a very, very big deal. Teaching menstrual hygiene in schools is a very big deal. And providing toilets for proper hygiene in schools is a very big deal.'
Talking about a range of welfare programs, Rupali Ganguly underlined the comprehensive approach the government has taken to empower women from childhood through adulthood. The actress praised the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, a savings scheme aimed at securing the future of the girl child, calling it a vital step toward long-term financial empowerment. She also lauded the Ujjwala Yojana, which has provided LPG connections to millions of women across rural India. 'It wasn't just about giving them a gas cylinder—it was about giving them a chance at better health,' Ganguly noted, highlighting how the scheme helped women suffering from asthma and other health issues caused by traditional cooking methods.
Rupali also appreciated the government's support for women-led start-ups, citing initiatives like Smart Didi Yojana and Drone Didi Yojana as groundbreaking steps. She also emphasised the continued relevance of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, which has helped reshape conversations around girls' education and safety.
Turning to sanitation, she underscored the importance of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, one of the Modi government's most widely recognised initiatives. She pointed out that the construction of lakhs of toilets not only improved hygiene but also restored dignity to women who previously lacked access to basic sanitation.
Rupali Ganguly also spoke about the long-awaited Women's Reservation Bill, calling it a historic milestone in Indian politics and a significant win for women who have fought for representation in Parliament for decades.

Punjab lagging behind other states as AAP not implementing central schemes: Puri

Union Minister Hardeep Puri Thursday accused the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab of not implementing central government schemes thereby hindering the development of the state. 'Punjab is falling behind other states economically due to the state government's reluctance to adopt central initiatives. States governed by the BJP or those cooperating with the Centre's policies are witnessing robust economic progress. Unfortunately, Punjab is not among them,' Puri said. The Union Minister was interacting with media after campaigning for BJP's Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll candidate Jiwan Gupta. Puri said that while country has made significant strides in several sectors, including advancements in space, Punjab has not fully benefited from central welfare programmes. He attributed this to the AAP government's purported non-implementation of central schemes like the Ayushman Bharat Healthcare programme and termed it a 'regrettable example'. 'All central schemes are available throughout the country, but if these schemes aren't implemented in states like Punjab, it's a matter of deep regret,' he said.' Puri also expressed concerns regarding the governance in Punjab and said, despite Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's election promise to eliminate drugs, little progress has been observed. He criticised the prevailing law and order situation in the state and also chided the AAP government for not keeping its poll promise of a Rs 1,000 per month allowance to women. 'Governance doesn't mean fake promises. Promises should be shown fulfilled on the ground,' he said. The minister said the Narendar Modi Government's 11-year report card on national achievements should be widely disseminated in Punjab. He said that in 2014, when Modi became prime minister, India's economy was valued at US $2 trillion and ranked 10th globally. 'Since then, India has surpassed the UK to become the 5th largest economy and recently overtook Japan to claim the 4th position,' he said. According to World Bank assessments, Puri projected that India would surpass Germany within the next year. He underscored India's robust economic growth rate of 6.5 per cent, significantly higher than the approximately 2 per cent growth rates of the UK, Japan, and Germany. 'This rapid growth positions India to become the world's third-largest economy by 2026, with its current economy standing at US $ 4.3 trillion,' he said. Puri further detailed the expansion of welfare programmes under the current administration. He noted that the number of LPG cylinder connections in the country has increased from 14 crore in 2014 to over 33 crore now. He mentioned the 2016 launch of the Ujjwala Yojana, which provides LPG cylinders at subsidised prices, primarily benefiting rural areas. Additionally, Puri said 4 crore people have received houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, with plans to construct 3 crore more homes across India in the coming years.

Pb's devp caused by failure to implement central schemes: Hardeep Puri

Ludhiana: Union minister of petroleum and natural gas, Hardeep Puri , on Thursday, said that Punjab's development had been hindered by the state government's alleged failure to implement people-centric schemes of the central government. Puri, who was in Ludhiana to campaign for party candidate Jiwan Gupta, said that this prevented Punjab residents from receiving benefits available to citizens in other states across the country. Addressing a press conference, Puri emphasised that while India made significant strides in development, including advancements in the space sector, Punjab did not fully benefit from central welfare programmes. He attributed this to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's non-implementation of these initiatives, citing the Ayushman Bharat Healthcare programme as a regrettable example. "All central schemes are available throughout the country but if these schemes aren't implemented in states like Punjab, it's a matter of deep regret," Puri said. Highlighting the achievements of the Union government, the minister said that in 2014, when Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, India's economy was valued at 2 trillion dollars and ranked 10th globally. The minister pointed out that in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, 33% of seats would be reserved for women, a move he described as fostering "women-led development." He also highlighted the significant growth in India's civil aviation sector, with the number of airports increasing from 74 before 2014 to over 150 now. Expressing concern about development in Punjab, Puri said that despite chief minister Bhagwant Mann's election promise to eliminate drugs, little progress was observed. He also criticised the prevailing law and order situation in the state. Puri urged that the BJP's 11-year report card on national achievements be widely disseminated in Punjab, asserting that it would "enthral" people across all sections. He concluded by stating that "governance didn't mean fake promises, but promises shown fulfilled on the ground," citing the AAP's unfulfilled promise of Rs 1,000 per month to women as an example.
