Punjab lagging behind other states as AAP not implementing central schemes: Puri

Indian Express2 days ago

Union Minister Hardeep Puri Thursday accused the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab of not implementing central government schemes thereby hindering the development of the state.
'Punjab is falling behind other states economically due to the state government's reluctance to adopt central initiatives. States governed by the BJP or those cooperating with the Centre's policies are witnessing robust economic progress. Unfortunately, Punjab is not among them,' Puri said.
The Union Minister was interacting with media after campaigning for BJP's Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll candidate Jiwan Gupta.
Puri said that while country has made significant strides in several sectors, including advancements in space, Punjab has not fully benefited from central welfare programmes.
He attributed this to the AAP government's purported non-implementation of central schemes like the Ayushman Bharat Healthcare programme and termed it a 'regrettable example'.
'All central schemes are available throughout the country, but if these schemes aren't implemented in states like Punjab, it's a matter of deep regret,' he said.'
Puri also expressed concerns regarding the governance in Punjab and said, despite Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's election promise to eliminate drugs, little progress has been observed.
He criticised the prevailing law and order situation in the state and also chided the AAP government for not keeping its poll promise of a Rs 1,000 per month allowance to women.
'Governance doesn't mean fake promises. Promises should be shown fulfilled on the ground,' he said.
The minister said the Narendar Modi Government's 11-year report card on national achievements should be widely disseminated in Punjab.
He said that in 2014, when Modi became prime minister, India's economy was valued at US $2 trillion and ranked 10th globally.
'Since then, India has surpassed the UK to become the 5th largest economy and recently overtook Japan to claim the 4th position,' he said.
According to World Bank assessments, Puri projected that India would surpass Germany within the next year.
He underscored India's robust economic growth rate of 6.5 per cent, significantly higher than the approximately 2 per cent growth rates of the UK, Japan, and Germany.
'This rapid growth positions India to become the world's third-largest economy by 2026, with its current economy standing at US $ 4.3 trillion,' he said.
Puri further detailed the expansion of welfare programmes under the current administration.
He noted that the number of LPG cylinder connections in the country has increased from 14 crore in 2014 to over 33 crore now.
He mentioned the 2016 launch of the Ujjwala Yojana, which provides LPG cylinders at subsidised prices, primarily benefiting rural areas.
Additionally, Puri said 4 crore people have received houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, with plans to construct 3 crore more homes across India in the coming years.

Haryana chief minister criticizes Punjab government for doing petty politics over important issues.

Ludhiana: Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) govt in Punjab, accusing it of politicising essential issues such as drinking water, drug control, and farm subsidies, instead of addressing them. His remarks came during a campaign visit to this city in support of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jiwan Gupta ahead of the June 19 Ludhiana West byelection. Speaking at a press conference, Saini criticised the AAP-led Punjab govt for allegedly denying Haryana its share of drinking water from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). "When Haryana only seeks water to drink, this govt, despite Punjab being the land of great Gurus, has turned it into a political drama," he said. Saini also accused AAP of using the war on drugs as a distraction. "Instead of catching real culprits, they are doing theatrics to cover up their failures," he said, adding that both AAP and Congress had betrayed Punjab's voters — Congress for five years, and AAP for the last three and a half. On the issue of minimum support price (MSP), Saini claimed that while Punjab failed to offer it to farmers, the Haryana got had provided subsidies on various crops under central government schemes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "We've implemented every major central scheme — from Ayushman Bharat to Ujjwala — and delivered results," he said, citing 13 lakh free electricity connections, 15 lakh free gas cylinders, and more than ₹2.5 crore in medical reimbursements. BJP eyes Punjab foothold Campaigning for BJP's Jiwan Gupta, Saini predicted a decisive win in Ludhiana West. "People here are tired of AAP and Congress. This time, Ludhiana West will elect a BJP MLA and send a message across Punjab that change is coming," he said, after meeting with industrialists and local residents. Black flags greet CM convoy Saini's visit was marred by protests as black flags were waved at his convoy. Protesters raised slogans such as "Punjab de paania de chor murdabad" (Death to the thieves of Punjab's waters). Police cleared the area to allow the cavalcade to pass. The Aam Aadmi Party, in a statement issued later that day, said the protests reflected public anger over Haryana's alleged historical exploitation of Punjab's water resources. "Hundreds turned out to oppose the CM's visit, expressing frustration over Haryana and BJP's continued attempts to loot Punjab's water," the statement read. AAP accused the Haryana govt of misusing Punjab's BBMB allocation and praised the Mann-led administration for standing firm on Punjab's water rights. "While earlier govts stayed silent, the Mann govt is working to expand canal water for irrigation and ensure optimal water management," the statement added. As the bypoll looms, water-sharing has emerged as a key campaign issue in Punjab, with voters watching closely which parties promise to safeguard the state's agricultural interests. Delhi chief minister announces revision of circle rates and formation of committee

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday that there would be a revision of circle rates soon. Citing inconsistencies with market value of land, CM directed the revision of circle rates and announced the formation of a committee under the chairmanship of the divisional commissioner to carry out this task. The committee will submit a report based on current market conditions and property values, which will then be used as the basis for revising the circle rates. Gupta said that there were inconsistencies in the current circle rate structure across Delhi that required reassessment. Circle rates, or minimum rates for the valuation of land and immovable property, were last hiked for residential areas in all existing categories (A to H) in Delhi in 2014. The previous govt also proposed an increase in the circle rate on farming land from Rs 53 lakh per acre fixed in 2008 to Rs 2-5 crore. However, it was not notified. Officials said that since there is a big gap between the existing circle rates and the market rate at which the sale and purchase of properties take place, there was an existing proposal to hike the rates by up to 35%. They said that govt would now come out with a fresh proposal after including feedback of stakeholders. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Govt may also consider downgrading or upgrading the categories of certain colonies based on their location, facilities and existing market rates. Officials said the previous plan prepared by the revenue department proposing the creation of sub-categories in A to H categories of residential areas with multiple slabs of rates was returned by the finance department with objections and suggestions. Delhi govt formed an empowered committee in 2016 and set up four working groups in 2021 to revise the rates, but no final decision was taken. Former deputy CM Manish Sisodia said in March 2022 that revising circle rates to align with the market rates was necessary to increase govt revenues in sectors other than GST. Lieutenant governor VK Saxena also asked the revenue department in Sept last year to give a presentation on the proposal it had finalised, but a perfect draft could not be readied. Gupta, after meeting with the task force to discuss the issues related to the development of better infrastructure in the capital and ease of doing business, said the meeting focused on critical issues such as unauthorised colonies, housing societies, redevelopment of colonies, and modernisation of infrastructure in industrial zones. CM said there was a need to make construction-related procedures simple, transparent and accountable to avoid unnecessary delays in developmental works. Regarding unauthorised colonies, Gupta instructed all civic agencies to take proactive steps for their improvement. She also directed Delhi Development Authority and urban development department to prepare a comprehensive and detailed report addressing issues related to ownership rights and property registration in these colonies.
