
'Inflammatory' Diet During Pregnancy Linked to Child Diabetes Risk

Pregnant women who consume a diet high in inflammation-promoting foods may be increasing their child's risk of developing type 1 diabetes, a study found.
The findings, published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, suggest that an expectant mother's diet could have long-term implications for her child's immune health.
Researchers discovered that for every one-unit increase in a dietary inflammation score—called the EDII (Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Index)—the child's risk of developing type 1 diabetes rose by 16 percent.

This risk appeared to be independent of factors like the child's sex or birth weight, but it was influenced by other maternal behaviors, including gluten intake and smoking during pregnancy.
The study is among the first large-scale investigations to link a pro-inflammatory maternal diet to type 1 diabetes in offspring, offering new insight into how prenatal nutrition may shape the immune system before birth.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The condition typically appears in childhood or adolescence and requires lifelong insulin therapy.
While genetics play a role, the consistent rise in type 1 diabetes diagnoses—about three to four percent per year in developed nations—points to significant environmental influences.
Researchers have long suspected that factors during early development, including in utero, may be critical to disease risk.
In this new study, scientists analyzed data from over 67,000 mother-child pairs from the Danish National Birth Cohort, tracking pregnancies from 1996 to 2002 and following children for an average of 17 years.
They used detailed food frequency questionnaires completed at around 25 weeks of pregnancy to assign each mother an EDII score based on the inflammatory potential of her diet.
Higher scores were linked to greater consumption of red and processed meats, sugary drinks, refined grains, fried foods and trans fats which have been deemed harmful to health.
Diets with more anti-inflammatory foods—such as leafy greens, garlic, tomatoes, whole grains, fruits, coffee and tea—were associated with lower scores.
Out of the 67,701 children tracked, 281 developed type 1 diabetes, with the average age of diagnosis being 10.
Notably, the study found that three maternal factors during mid-pregnancy—an inflammatory diet, higher gluten intake and smoking—were all independently associated with a greater risk of type 1 diabetes in children.
A 10-gram increase in daily gluten consumption was linked to a striking 36 percent rise in risk.
"Mid-pregnancy may be a critical period during which the fetus is particularly susceptible to maternal lifestyle influences," the authors wrote, suggesting this stage as a window of opportunity for prevention.
The study's lead researchers warn that while the study is observational and cannot prove causality, the patterns are compelling.
"A low-grade inflammatory state... is increasingly acknowledged as a critical early-life factor influencing offspring health," they explained, emphasizing that the immune system begins developing well before birth.
This research adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that dietary choices during pregnancy can have profound and lasting effects. "It underscores the importance of anti-inflammatory, nutrient-rich foods during pregnancy," said the study's authors, calling for further research and potentially updated dietary guidance for expectant mothers.

"CTE is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that develops as a result of repeated impacts over time, leading to the buildup of abnormal tau protein and progressive brain degeneration," Damian Bailey, a professor of physiology and biochemistry and director of the Neurovascular Research Laboratory at the University of South Wales, told Newsweek. Cumulative exposure to repeated sub-concussive or concussive impacts "significantly increases the risk" of developing the disease, he said. Other factors may influence susceptibility, he said, such as genetic factors and substance abuse, but "repetitive head trauma is currently the only confirmed environmental cause," meaning military personnel and athletes engaged with contact sports are most at risk. Bailey said it's important to note that contact doesn't have to be directly to the head in order to pose a problem, and could be a shoulder impact, for example. Also, 90 percent of concussions don't involve a loss of consciousness, he added, "so the damage is cumulative and often goes undetected." CTE can have wide-ranging effects on a person's life, potentially leading to severe mood instability including paranoia, suicidal or homicidal ideation, emotional dysregulation, aggression, impulsivity, and impaired judgement, Bailey said. The disease, "in rare but tragic cases, may contribute to violent behavior when combined with other stressors and access to weapons," he added. As diagnosis of the condition requires thorough examination of brain tissue, it can only be done after death, but experts have developed a clinical criteria for a group of symptoms associated with CTE, known as traumatic encephalopathy syndrome, to help inform patient care. It is crucial to note that, in light of the shooting on Monday evening, even if Tamura had CTE, "that would not justify these heinous actions," Dr. Daniel H. Daneshvar, co-director of the Mass General Brigham Sport Concussion Clinic, and professor at Harvard Medical School, told Newsweek. "While understanding brain health is vital, linking a single act of violence directly to CTE without evidence risks misunderstanding both the disease and the tragedy," he added. He said that there is "no direct, one-to-one connection between CTE pathology and a specific action," meaning that "many people with CTE never engage in violence, and most violent acts are not caused by CTE." Findings of CTE Among NFL Players Football is a contact sport that "involves frequent, repetitive head impacts, including many that do not cause acute symptoms, leading to cumulative brain trauma over time," Bailey said. "The combination of high-speed collisions in very powerful players, repeated sub-concussive hits, and a culture that historically downplays concussions increases the risk of long-term brain injury and corresponding CTE," he added. CTE typically develops following "thousands of head impacts over years," Daneshvar said. "As a result, the number of years and intensity of exposure matter—research has shown a dose-response relationship, where the risk and severity of CTE increase with more years of experiencing repeated head impacts," he said. This means that someone who only played through high school typically has a much lower level of exposure than a professional athlete, he added. In a 2024 study of almost 2,000 former players, researchers found that 34 percent believed they had CTE—although, given it cannot yet be diagnosed in a living person, they did not know for certain. Those that believed they had the condition were found to have higher rates of cognitive problems, mental health disorders, chronic pain, head injury and low testosterone. Around 25 percent of those who believed they had CTE also reported suicidality, while 5 percent of those who did not believe they had CTE reported the same. In a 2023 study, Boston University CTE Center found that 345 out of 376 former NFL players who donated their brains to the center for investigation had CTE—equating to 90 percent of them having the disease. However, the researchers noted that this does not suggest 90 percent of NFL players have the condition, as it can only be diagnosed after death, and prevalence remains unknown. Comparatively, a 2018 Boston University study conducted on 164 men and women from the general population found only one person had CTE—and the lone case was a former college football player. The findings suggest that, while cases of CTE seem to be extremely low in the general population, cases appear to be significant among former NFL players—tying the disease to the sport in a strong association. Other sports have also been associated with the condition, with documented cases of CTE in hockey, boxing, rugby union, wrestling, soccer, horse racing and mixed martial arts, Bailey said. What Has NFL Said About CTE? An NFL official first acknowledged the link between CTE and football in 2016, during a roundtable organized by the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Energy & Commerce. In the meeting, Jeff Miller, the league's senior vice president for health and safety, was asked if there was a link between the two, and, according to ESPN, Miller confirmed that there was. While previous officials had referred to the risk of concussions leading to long-term problems, it marked the first time the NFL addressed that frequent head trauma could lead to CTE. An NFL memo released that same year also reported that the league had "recognized for years that studies, including those done at Boston University, have identified retired players who were diagnosed with CTE following their deaths," and that the league has helped to fund the university's research, according to NBC Sports. However, while the NFL had spent millions on concussion research, it has spent comparatively very little on CTE studies, ABC News reported. Per the outlet, in 2017, $100 million was invested in concussion research by the NFL, while they had only funded one study on CTE—and that focused on jockeys rather than football players. The 2016 memo added that research is still in its "infancy" and said that the studies completed have been based on "a largely self-selected population," raising an issue of "selection bias," according to NBC Sports. Per the outlet, the NFL memo then stated "there is no reliable evidence on the incidence or prevalence of CTE," meaning the league could not provide any "reliable statement" on the risk of CTE in the sport. Newsweek has contacted the NFL via email for comment. What Needs To Be Done? Some focus has been placed on reducing concussions in the sport—with the NFL allowing players to wear Guardian Caps, extra head protection intended to reduce head injuries, during play as well as in practice. Reports have also indicated a drop in concussions in the sport. Yet, little has been done about tackling the broader risk of CTE in football. This could be down to multiple factors, such as "financial interests, cultural resistance to changing traditional gameplay, lack of immediate visible consequences, limited awareness or denial of the risks, and the complexity of fully understanding and diagnosing the condition which currently takes place at autopsy," Bailey said. However, he said that sports organizations and governing bodies "should implement stricter safety protocols, improve concussion detection and management, enforce rule changes to reduce head impacts, invest in education for players and coaches, and support ongoing research to better understand and prevent CTE." "We are currently running to stand still given the prevalence of contact in sport and I anticipate seeing an explosion of clinical cases," he added. According to the researchers, "as much as 10 percent of this material may accrete to the Earth on timescales of a few days," depending on the exact location of the impact on the Moon's surface. The moondust blasted at Earth's would differ significantly from typical meteors, the team explain. Firstly, the dust would enter Earth's upper atmosphere at the relatively slow speed of approximately seven miles per second; this is considerably slower than well-known showers like the Perseids, which travel at around 37 miles per second. As a result, these lunar meteors would likely appear dimmer and more prolonged than standard "shooting stars"—but they could still be visible to the naked eye, and in substantial numbers. Simulations by the researchers suggest that this unique storm could continue for several days. What makes this event truly remarkable is the prospect that nearly every visible meteor during such a shower would be an actual fragment of the Moon. Historical Significance and Concerns If asteroid 2024 YR4 does strike in 2032, it would be a rare historical event, the researchers note. "If 2024 YR4 strikes the Moon in 2032, it will (statistically speaking) be the largest impact in approximately 5,000 years," they wrote in their paper. Beyond the spectacular sight, though, the potential impact also raises concerns for planetary defense and space operations. The researchers noted that the "impacts on the Moon may generate particles which can interfere with Low Earth orbiting satellites," often used for communication, Earth observation and research. Astronomers will have a clearer picture of asteroid 2024 YR4's trajectory in 2028 when it clears the sun and becomes observable again, allowing for updated calculations on its likelihood of impact. Parts of the state have been beset by blazes in recent months, with one wildfire in May consuming more than 35,000 acres of land, although the current problems are being caused by smoke drifting down from Canadian fires. The smoke, combined with current weather conditions, has led to poor air quality in some areas. In Texas, which is currently also subject to a number of heat warnings, it is the ozone which is causing problems for air quality. Ozone is a gas that occurs both above the Earth and at ground level. The layer in the upper atmosphere protects the planet from the Sun's radiation, but ozone that forms at ground level—caused by a chemical reaction in the sunlight between pollutants such as car exhaust fumes and power plant emissions—is harmful. It is hoped that motorists will leave their vehicles at home, avoid idling their engines or using drive-thru lanes, and instead use public transport or car shares to lessen the impact on the environment. Minnesota Warnings "The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution," the NWS said. "The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Red or Unhealthy category." North central, northwest, northeast, and east central Minnesota are all affected by the warning, which will remain in place from 6 a.m. CDT Tuesday until 11 p.m. CDT Wednesday. The general public may suffer some adverse effects from the poor quality air, while "sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects," the NWS added. Texas Warnings The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has issued an "Ozone Action Day" (OAD) for the areas of Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Galveston, and Brazoria, the NWS said. The OAD alert "informs the public when conditions are forecast to be favorable for high ozone levels," according to the TCEQ website. "Atmospheric conditions are expected to be favorable for producing high levels of ozone air pollution…[on]Tuesday," the NWS said. "You can help prevent ozone pollution by sharing a ride, walking, riding a bicycle, taking your lunch to work, avoiding drive-through lanes, conserving energy, and keeping your vehicle properly tuned." What People Are Saying The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says: "Smoke is made up of a complex mixture of gases and fine particles produced when wood and other organic materials burn. The biggest health threat from smoke is from fine particles. These microscopic particles can get into your eyes and respiratory system—whether you are outdoors or indoors, where they can cause health problems…[and] also aggravate chronic heart and lung diseases—and are even linked to premature deaths in people with these conditions." Addressing the problem of ozone, the EPA says: "Ozone in the air we breathe can harm our health, especially on hot sunny days when ozone can reach unhealthy levels. People at greatest risk of harm from breathing air containing ozone include people with asthma."
