Two closed Milwaukee park-and-ride lots will temporarily reopen for Summerfest this year

Yahooa day ago

Two shuttered park-and-ride lots will temporarily reopen during Summerfest weekends, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced.
The northeast and southwest lots at Interstate 43/94 and College Avenue will open for Summerfest shuttle service throughout the festival. The lots were part of several that DOT officials closed in October 2024, removing dozens of people who were living in their cars and tents in the lots.
Here's when the lots will be open and why they were closed last year.
The lots will be open from 10:30 a.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. Sunday throughout the following weekends, DOT said:
June 19 to 22
June 26 to 29
July 3 to 6
Vehicles left in the lots after closure times may be towed, and the lots will remain fully closed after Summerfest, DOT said.

DOT officials indefinitely closed park-and-ride lots at College and Holt avenues last fall after an uptick in emergency calls from the area.
Between July 1 and Sept. 30, 2024, there was a 42% increase from the year prior in emergency calls related to the lots, officials said. The calls included reports of theft, shots fired and drug overdoses, according to DOT.
By early November 2024, DOT had began removing people who were living in the lots. Several people said they were given short notice and limited resources before they were forced to leave.

Puerto Rico native killed in suspected reckless driving crash in downtown Milwaukee

Iris Feliciano-Hernandez moved to Milwaukee from Puerto Rico in 2016 so that she could start a new journey and grow as a person. She died in a suspected reckless driving crash this past weekend in downtown Milwaukee. The early morning June 7 fatal crash took place at the intersection of West State and North Sixth streets, just a block from Milwaukee police headquarters. Feliciano-Hernandez, 30, died at the scene. Tremayne A. Brown, a 20-year-old Milwaukee man, has been charged in connection to the crash with second-degree reckless homicide, accused of traveling at 70 mph downtown before running a red light and crashing into Feliciano-Hernandez. Brown told an officer at the scene that he had "a couple of shots" of gin earlier in the morning after the officer reported that Brown couldn't remember where he was going or what day it was, according to a criminal complaint filed June 10. Prosecutors said the result of Brown's blood draw are still pending. Police recovered video of the crash and downloaded data from Brown's vehicle, which shows that Brown was traveling westbound on State Street at 70 mph and the accelerator was activated at 100% before the crash, the complaint said. The speed limit on this portion of State Street is 30 mph. Brown also had a suspended driver's license and was cited twice in March and once in April of driving with a suspended license. He is currently in custody of the Milwaukee County Jail, held on $50,000 bail. He faces decades behind bars. Feliciano-Hernandez's parents, Blanca Hernandez and Edwin Feliciano, still live in Puerto Rico. Feliciano-Hernandez grew up in Aguada, Puerto Rico. She had a small amount of immediate family members in Milwaukee. Her cousins, Dimy Hernandez and Zully Velazquez, and her partner, Felix, have been serving as points of contact for authorities and recently they worked with Feliciano-Hernandez's parents, who only speak Spanish, to respond to a request for comment from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Iris was an only daughter and so loved," her family said in a statement. "She had a contagious smile, she was very creative and charismatic." Feliciano-Hernandez moved to the U.S. to "better herself," her family said. She was working for a manufacturing company in Waukesha and also had a small business baking Puerto Rican treats. "She loved to make things to make others happy," her family said. "When she wasn't working she devoted herself to her small business. She also enjoyed spending time with friends and her fur babies: Milo, Aura, and Mia." Feliciano-Hernandez's family said they seek justice. "We don't understand how an individual who was stopped various times within the last two months by the Milwaukee police for driving with a suspended license was still driving around freely," the family said. A small service for immediate family was held for Feliciano-Hernandez at Witkowiak Funeral Home on Milwaukee's historic Mitchell Street. Her father has returned to Puerto Rico, where he awaits the transfer of his only child's body. A funeral service will take place in Puerto Rico on June 19. Troopers charge Arkport motorist with three felonies in crash that injured DOT workers

An Arkport driver who allegedly struck and injured three people while driving through a state work zone in Hornellsville faces felony charges and a drugged driving count in connection to the June 11 crash. Hornell-based New York State Police said a 2019 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Brooke A. Burdett, 30, was southbound on state Route 36 at around 11 a.m. when it struck a trio of New York state Department of Transportation employees. The workers were washing down a bridge when the vehicle plowed into the work zone at 36 and county Road 70A., Hornell public safety officials said. The Pathfinder then collided with a DOT vehicle stationed at the site, troopers said. Two of the workers, ages 52 and 60, were taken to St. James Hospital in Hornell. The third, a 30-year-old, was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. All three were released from the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, State Police said. Burdett was charged with three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, a class D felony, driving while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, and several traffic infractions. Troopers said Burdett appeared in Steuben County Central Arraignment Court. Three Hornell Fire Department rigs went to the crash, according to Fire Chief Frank Brzozowski. 'When the first call came in, it said bad accident, a car plowed through a construction area, several people injured. So we were addressing it as a mass casualty incident,' Brzozowski told the Hornell Board of Public Safety Thursday. "That is our primary area, so we dispatched automatically with North Hornell Fire (Department).' More: Things to do, specials to take advantage of in Hornell area on Father's Day 2025, June 15 Brzozowski said fire department personnel were gratified there were not as many people hurt as originally feared. "We just lost Highway Maintenance Supervisor Robert Bornt – one of our own – just 12 days ago in a horrific work zone crash, and our entire team is still reeling from this senseless loss of life. I am pleading with the traveling public: SLOW DOWN, MOVE OVER, PAY ATTENTION and please respect the fact that our workers are out on the roadways doing their job – and their job is to keep the traveling public safe.
