Dozens of video game workers with Ubisoft Halifax have filed to unionize, according to the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Canada.
A majority of the nearly 60 staff workers at Ubisoft Halifax, which has an office on Barrington Street, filed with the Nova Scotia Labour Board on Wednesday, according to a news release from CWA.
'Unionizing with my coworkers at Ubisoft Halifax is important to me so that we have the strength needed to protect what we have today and to fight for our tomorrow,' said senior server programmer Thomas Gillis in the release. 'With no end in sight to the industry-wide turbulence that sees studios shutter on releasing games fans love, it is up to us, the workers, to organize and demand a say in our labour, art and future.'
Following certification, the union will include producers, designers, programmers, artists, researchers and development testers.
According to its website, the gaming studio was founded in 2010 and became Ubisoft Halifax in 2015. Some of its games include Rainbow Six Mobile and Assassin's Creed Rebellion.
Ubisoft was founded in 1986 and is headquartered in France with studios around the world.

Last day of school: students in St-Laurent say goodbye as their favourite teachers enter retirement
It's the final day of classes at Gardenview Elementary School in St-Laurent, and beloved teacher Paula Cohen's last day at work before retirement. It's the final day of classes at Gardenview Elementary School in St-Laurent. The gym is full of happy students yet this milestone is bittersweet because some cherished teachers are retiring. After 35 years in education, Paula Cohen is calling it a day. 'It's a second home, so it's hard to say goodbye. But hopefully I will be back to sub occasionally,' the longtime teacher said Friday. In her French class, almost all her Grade 4 students are sad to see her go, except Giuseppe Zezzie who says she gave too much homework. But Madame Cohen thinks his comment is funny and she's good at 'rolling with the punches.' Students at Gardenview Elementary School in St-Laurent mark their last day of school on Friday, June 20, 2025. (Christine Long/CTV News) Students marked their last day at school at Gardenview Elementary School in St-Laurent on Friday, June 20, 2025. (Christine Long/CTV News) After all, she's been performing in front of a live audience for decades and thinks retirement might be the time to go professional. 'If there are any producers or directors watching, I would love to be in a comedy, a small part in a comedy. I would never say no,' she said jokingly. Down the hall, in her kindergarten class, it was graduation day. The event is extra special for teacher Elaine Kindlein, who is also retiring. 'Miss Elaine is nice to me, respectful, and she helps me learn as big as my heart,' one student told CTV News. Retirement means more kayaking for Kindlein, who also says she'll be back as a substitute teacher. Kindlein says her plans are outdoorsy: 'I'm going to do kayaking and things to be really healthy and then I hope to come back and see all of these wonderful kids.'

X, CLF, NUE: Canada to Raise Steel and Aluminum Counter-Tariffs
Canada is threatening to raise its counter-tariffs on imports of U.S. steel and aluminum products starting on July 21. Confident Investing Starts Here: Easily unpack a company's performance with TipRanks' new KPI Data for smart investment decisions Receive undervalued, market resilient stocks right to your inbox with TipRanks' Smart Value Newsletter Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government will place tariffs on steel and aluminum products that are 'consistent' with U.S. duties that currently sit at 50%. The move will coincide with the end of the 30-day trade deal deadline announced after Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump met at a recent G7 meeting. Prime Minister Carney also said that his government's procurement policies will favor Canadian suppliers and 'reliable trading partners' moving forward. Finally, his government will unleash new, retroactive tariff quota rates at 100% of 2024 levels on imports of steel products from non-free trade agreement countries. Higher tariffs from Canada are likely to impact major steel producers such as U.S. Steel (X), Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF), and Nucor Corp. (NUE). Tit-for-Tat The announcement of more tit-for-tat tariffs comes as Canada's industrial sector strains under pressure from President Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Earlier in June, the president hiked existing metals tariffs from 25% to 50% in a move aimed at protecting American workers. Since the first Trump tariffs were introduced in April, layoffs have risen and investments fallen in Canada's metals sector, says the Canadian Steel Producers Association, which has previously said that, 'At a 50 per cent tariff rate, the U.S. market is effectively closed to Canadian steel.' Now, Prime Minister Carney says that new counter tariffs unveiled in coming weeks will combat symptoms of 'persistent global overcapacity.' Is CLF Stock a Buy? Cleveland-Cliffs stock has a consensus Hold rating among eight Wall Street analysts. That rating is based on two Buy, five Hold, and one Sell recommendations issued in the last three months. The average CLF price target of $8.34 implies 13.78% upside from current levels.
