On Thursday, the CM visited the disaster-hit Pauri Garhwal district to assess the damage caused by a devastating cloudburst that struck the region a day earlier. The cloudburst in the Pabau and Thalisain blocks resulted in multiple casualties and widespread destruction of homes, roads, and bridges. CM Dhami, accompanied by officials and local leaders, instructed the administration to expedite rescue and relief operations. He assured the affected families of all possible assistance and said he was personally monitoring the situation from the ground.
In Dharali, at least 50 civilians, eight jawans and a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) are still missing after a cloudburst triggered flash flood and landslides on August 5.
After the cloudburst, the area remains largely inaccessible, with key road links at Bartwari, Linchigad, Gangrani, Harsil, and Dharali severely damaged. The Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel are providing the stranded tourists with food, medical aid, and shelter.
Restoration efforts are underway, but weather and terrain challenges persist.
According to the Army, tourists were being evacuated from Nelong helipad on return sorties. The Military helipad at Harsil is fully operational.
Nelong helipad is functional and connected by road to Gangotri, enabling smoother movement of tourists and relief personnel. However, the Dharali civil helipad remains non-operational due to a mudslide.
The Army, in close coordination with civil authorities and other agencies, has ramped up Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
Army officials said that search and rescue dogs have also been deployed in key sectors to aid in locating survivors and missing personnel.

Punjab launches anti-drone systems to tackle cross-border smuggling

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Saturday deployed three anti-drone systems along the international border to counter the smuggling of drugs and weapons through drones from Pakistan. Mann, who along with AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, unveiled the anti-drone systems in Tarn Taran, said that Punjab is the first state in India to deploy such a system in its border areas. The anti-drone system will be called 'Baaz Akh' (Hawk Eye), the chief minister said, adding that it will be deployed from Pathankot to Fazilka as the second line of defence in the border districts in coordination with the Border Security Force. Mann explained that the second line of defence refers to the deployment of the Punjab Police in border districts, working alongside the BSF stationed at the international border. He emphasised that this initiative marks a significant step for the Punjab government in the fight against the smuggling of drugs and arms across the border. 'In the coming days, we will expand the anti-drone system throughout the state,' he added. Reaffirming his government's commitment to maintaining peace and harmony in the state, Mann said this initiative will play a crucial role in the government's anti-drug drive, Yudh Nasheyan Virudh (war against drugs). To enhance border security and address challenges posed by drone activities from Pakistan, nine anti-drone units are being established along the international border for Rs 51.4 crore, Mann informed, asserting that the anti-drone system will significantly counter the activities of drug smugglers. 'The enemies of the country have turned drones into weapons to harm Punjab's youth, using them to smuggle drugs across the border,' Mann said, praising the security forces for their relentless efforts to combat cross-border drug trafficking. He said that in 2024, a total of 283 drones loaded with heroin, weapons, and ammunition were seized, and as of 2025, 137 drones have already been recovered. Expressing confidence that the anti-drone system will assist the security forces in combating the smuggling of drugs and weapons, Mann said it will be deployed at specific border points where high drone activity has been observed. Mann claimed that the Punjab Police did not have any such system to neutralise drones previously. Further informing that the anti-drone system is equipped to accurately detect the drone's position and its ground control stations, the chief minister stated that this system comes with an automated alert technology, which immediately notifies authorities upon detecting drone movement, thus eliminating the need for manual monitoring. To ensure effective implementation, coordination will be maintained with the BSF, the Air Force, the Army, and other relevant agencies, Mann stated. During the launch, Kejriwal stated that another chapter has been added to their fight against drugs. He highlighted the AAP government's efforts to tackle the drug menace while criticising previous governments for their alleged collusion with drug smugglers, which he claimed contributed to the state's drug problems. Announcing that a crackdown against drug trafficking has begun, and the 'big fish' involved in this trade have been rounded up, Kejriwal further claimed that a notorious and feared drug lord has been put behind bars by the Bhagwant Mann government. He mentioned that the Punjab Police is actively taking action against drug smugglers, including demolishing properties acquired through drug trafficking as part of their anti-drug campaign. 'We know that most drugs enter from Pakistan through drones. Today, the Punjab government is implementing the anti-drone system, which will neutralise any drone that crosses into Punjab from Pakistan,' the former Delhi chief minister said. Three anti-drone systems were launched on Saturday, with plans to deploy six more. If necessary, additional systems will be purchased, Kejriwal stated, emphasising the government's commitment to eradicating the drug menace in Punjab.

‘Time for Indian tech companies to focus on country's needs': PM Modi in Bengaluru

'Indian tech companies have made a mark globally, developing software and products for the entire world. It is now time to prioritise India's own needs more strongly and must accelerate the development of new products, especially as software and apps are now being used across every domain,' PM Modi said after inaugurating critical mobility infrastructure projects in Bengaluru. On Sunday, Modi inaugurated the 19.16 km Yellow Line of Bengaluru metro worth around Rs 7,160 crore, thus expanding the city's metro network to 96 km. He also laid the foundation stone of the Bengaluru Metro Phase-3 project worth over Rs 15,610 crore and flagged off three Vande Bharat Express trains at KSR railway station, Bengaluru. Vande Bharat trains were launched between Bengaluru and Belagavi, Nagpur and Pune, and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Amritsar. Modi also undertook a metro ride on the newly inaugurated metro line from Ragigudda metro station to Electronic City station. Addressing the gathering at the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore, Modi stated that it is essential for India to reach new heights in emerging fields. Calling for focused efforts to lead in emerging fields, the prime minister stressed the need to strengthen Bengaluru and Karnataka's presence in 'Make in India' and the manufacturing sector. He urged that India's products must adhere to the 'Zero Defect, Zero Effect' standard, meaning they should be flawless in quality and have no negative impact on the environment. Stressing India's economic strides, PM Modi said, 'India is currently the fastest-growing major economy in the world. In the past 11 years, India's economy has risen from the 10th position to the top five globally, and is rapidly progressing toward becoming one of the top three economies.' He attributed this momentum to the spirit of 'Reform, Perform and Transform,' driven by clear intent and honest efforts. Modi also highlighted that before 2014, India's total exports had reached only $468 billion, whereas today, that figure has risen to $824 billion. He also remarked that earlier, India used to import mobile phones, but now, the country is among the top five exporters of mobile handsets. He noted that Bengaluru has played a significant role in this transformation and that India's electronics exports have now increased to nearly $38 billion from $6 billion in 2014. He also highlighted that 11 years ago, India's automobile exports stood at approximately $16 billion, and that figure has more than doubled, making India the fourth-largest automobile exporter globally. Acknowledging the contribution of the youth of Bengaluru and Karnataka in Operation Sindoor, Modi highlighted the success of Indian forces in the operation, noting their capability to destroy terrorist hideouts deep across the border. He attributed the success of Operation Sindoor to the power of technology and the strength of 'Make in India' in the defence sector.

PM Modi arrives in Bengaluru to unveil infrastructure projects

Bengaluru, Aug 10 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bengaluru today to a grand and enthusiastic welcome from thousands of BJP workers, supporters, and local residents, transforming the city into a celebration zone under tight security. The visit, packed with landmark infrastructure events, is being hailed by party leaders as a historic step in Bengaluru's and Karnataka's development journey. The Prime Minister's first major stop will be the inauguration of Namma Metro's Yellow Line, a long-awaited 19.75-km corridor built at a cost of approximately Rs 7,160 crore. The new line, connecting R.V. Road to Bommasandra, is expected to directly benefit over eight lakh commuters daily, significantly reducing travel time between Bengaluru's central areas and the bustling industrial and IT hubs in the south. Officials said the Yellow Line will not only decongest some of the city's busiest roads but also improve last-mile connectivity to tech parks, industrial estates, and residential zones. In a move to further bolster Bengaluru's public transport network, Modi also will lay the foundation stone for Phase-3 of the Bengaluru Metro, an ambitious Rs 15,610-crore expansion project. This phase, once completed, will add several crucial corridors to the network, linking emerging residential layouts and commercial areas to the city's heart, thus easing pressure on existing routes. The day's significance extension beyond metro developments, with the Prime Minister will be the flagging off multiple Vande Bharat trains — high-speed, modern trains that symbolize India's rail transformation. The services include Bengaluru to Belagavi, Amritsar to Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, and Nagpur (Ajni) to Pune, each aimed at enhancing inter-city connectivity and reducing travel time for passengers. Railway officials noted that these routes were chosen for their high passenger demand and their potential to stimulate trade and tourism. Karthik Reddy, Deputy Inspector General and Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said comprehensive traffic management measures were in place for the Prime Minister's visit. 'We have already announced diversions to the public, and heavy vehicles have been moved to the city outskirts to ensure smooth movement. All traffic arrangements have been completed,' he said. Multiple agencies, including city police, special protection units, and railway security forces, coordinated to ensure a seamless schedule for the day. The Prime Minister's itinerary includes a high-profile public address in Electronic City, where he is expected to highlight his government's infrastructure push in Karnataka and its alignment with the vision of a developed India by 2047. BJP leaders see the visit as a crucial opportunity to showcase the Modi government's track record, especially in the run-up to upcoming political contests in the state. With banners, posters, and saffron flags lining key stretches of the city, and chants of 'Modi, Modi' echoing at gathering points, Bengaluru wore a festive look. For many residents, the day's events represented more than just project inaugurations — they symbolized aspirations for faster, more efficient mobility and a boost to the city's standing as India's tech and innovation capital.
