MAMBA: Avoid politicising e-commerce fee hikes, focus on MSME sustainability

THE Malaysian Micro Business Association (MAMBA) has urged for a balanced and constructive conversation around recent fee changes by e-commerce platforms, warning against scare tactics and politicisation.
'We must avoid scare tactics and politicising important conversations that directly affect thousands of Malaysian sellers,' said MAMBA secretary-general Alvin Low Wei Yan.
'There needs to be room for discussion—so that everyone, from sellers to shoppers to platforms—can win,' he said.
Low said the influx of cheap imports, especially from China amid the ongoing trade war, is already threatening local MSMEs, adding that fee adjustments may be necessary to ensure platforms can continue investing in infrastructure and services.
'Good customer experience is not just a buyer issue – it's a seller issue too,' he said. 'Sellers benefit when platforms are seen as trustworthy and efficient.'
MAMBA stressed the importance of collaboration between government, platforms, and seller groups to protect MSMEs, warning that blanket criticism and punitive calls could harm the broader digital economy.
'Calling for authorities to threaten or punish platforms simply for raising fees is counter-productive and risks undermining the very ecosystem we are trying to strengthen,' said Low. –TMR

Anwar unveils three measures to boost Malaysia's semiconductor industry

PETALING JAYA: The government has announced three key measures to ensure Malaysia's semiconductor industry remains globally competitive. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia is now ready to provide stronger support to the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), particularly in developing "10+100" national champions. The "10+100" initiative aims to build 10 Malaysian semiconductor and supply chain companies with revenues between RM1 billion and RM4.7 billion, and to nurture at least 100 more to approach the RM1 billion mark. "First, we will unlock more catalytic capital to support early-stage research and development, product development, and ecosystem scaling. "This includes a suite of targeted financing instruments, matching funds, and customised incentives, alongside continued investments by our government-linked investment companies (GLICs), all aimed at strengthening local semiconductor capabilities and advancing Malaysia's position in the global value chain," he said. He said this during his speech at the closing of the Asean Semiconductor Summit in Kuala Lumpur today. Present were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. Anwar said Malaysia has so far received over RM2 billion in commitments from the government and crowd-in capital from stakeholders, including Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Kumpulan Wang Persaraan, and Bank Negara Malaysia, as well as through partnerships with global players. "Second, we will elevate our semiconductor diplomacy through deeper government-to-government cooperation, expanding market access for Malaysian firms and forging trusted technology partnerships. "As Asean chair, Malaysia will lead efforts to strengthen regional collaboration, positioning Asean as a resilient and competitive hub in the global semiconductor value chain," he said. Anwar said that through the collaboration between Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (Crest) and Human Resources Development Corporation (HRD Corp), the government will strengthen industry-academia partnerships to build a future-ready workforce. He said this will ensure Malaysia builds focused capabilities and remains competitive in a rapidly evolving, high-tech global landscape.

Malaysia PM urges Thailand, Cambodia to stand down after border clash

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Thailand and Cambodia to 'stand down' following deadly border clashes between the two Southeast Asian nations. As the current chair of ASEAN, Malaysia is pushing for immediate de-escalation and peaceful negotiations. 'The least we can expect is for them to stand down and hopefully try to enter into negotiation,' Anwar told reporters. He added that he had sent messages to both leaders and hoped to speak with them soon. The conflict intensified on Thursday as Thailand conducted air strikes while Cambodia retaliated with rockets and artillery. The fighting centres on the disputed Emerald Triangle, a region where the borders of Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos converge. Cambodia's cross-border attacks reportedly killed at least 11 Thai civilians, mostly in a rocket strike near a petrol station in Sisaket province. 'The development is concerning. They are important members of ASEAN. They are very close to Malaysia,' Anwar said. The clashes come just two weeks after ASEAN foreign ministers met in Kuala Lumpur with global counterparts, including the US and China. The long-running dispute has previously erupted into violence, most recently in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed. 'Peace is the only option available,' Anwar stressed.

GRIP programme fosters unity and responsibility in Malaysian society

KUANTAN: The Gerak Integrasi Perpaduan (GRIP) programme is a long-term investment in fostering a united, inclusive, and responsible Malaysian society, according to National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang. He emphasised that the programme utilises an intercultural module focused on experiential and interactive learning, reinforcing national values, cultural traditions, heritage, and civic morals. The initiative is a collaboration between the Department of National Unity and Integration and the Ministry of Education, engaging secondary school students nationwide. 'Schools are the foundation for instilling values in every citizen. They are not merely places of learning, but spaces where unity is nurtured and brought to life through genuine, everyday interactions,' he said. Aaron highlighted that schools play a crucial role in translating the Rukun Negara ideology into practice, promoting mutual respect, cooperation, and understanding among students from diverse backgrounds. The minister's speech was delivered by National Unity Ministry deputy secretary-general Mohamad Sobri Mat Daud at the closing ceremony of the 2025 National-Level Rukun Negara Club GRIP Programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tengku Afzan. Aaron explained that GRIP is structured around three key clusters: nationhood, culture and traditions, and core moral values. 'GRIP serves as a practical platform to train the younger generation to embrace inclusivity and appreciate diversity firsthand,' he added. The four-day event involved 200 students from across the country, reinforcing the programme's role in shaping a harmonious society. - Bernama
