Special Representative Simão concludes visit to Burkina Faso, expresses solidarity and renews United Nations Support
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, concluded yesterday a four-day visit to Burkina Faso.
Following his visit to Niger, this trip was also part of UNOWAS ongoing commitment to support the people of Burkina Faso in their efforts to consolidate peace, security, and development.
In Ouagadougou, Mr. Simão held a series of meetings with the authorities. He was received in audience by the Prime Minister, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo. He also held discussions with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabè Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré; the President of the Transitional Legislative Assembly, Ousmane Bougouma; the Commander and Minister of Humanitarian Action and National Solidarity, Ms. Passowendé Pélagie Kabre Kabore; and the Minister of Sports, Youth and Employment, Anuuyirtole Roland Somda. He also met with representatives of civil society, the United Nations country team, and the diplomatic corps.
The discussions covered various topics related to the national and regional situation, particularly the security situation in the sub-region and the need to coordinate efforts to effectively combat terrorism, which is using more sophisticated weapons and children.
In this regard, the Special Representative welcomed the successful meeting held in Bamako on May 22 between the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and called for regional and international cooperation in the fight against terrorism, which threatens all states in the region.
The Special Representative reiterated the United Nations' commitment, in coordination with its partners, to continue supporting the people of Burkina Faso in their quest for peace and prosperity, including in the area of food self-sufficiency.

President Sheikh Mohamed meets Emir of Qatar in Doha
President Sheikh Mohamed on Wednesday arrived in Doha, where he was met by Sheikh Tamim, Emir of Qatar. The visit follows a phone call between the two men on Tuesday, during which Sheikh Mohamed expressed hope that the Israel-Iran ceasefire would bolster 'security, stability and peace across the Middle East'. The UAE leader praised Sheikh Tamim for his role in securing the truce and emphasised the importance of continued co-ordination and joint action to ensure the success of the agreement, state news agency Wam reported. Sheikh Mohamed also expressed the UAE's full support for Qatar following the thwarted Iranian attack on the Al Udeid airbase in the country on Monday night. He enquired after the well-being of the people of Qatar and reaffirmed the UAE's condemnation of the attack and its support for measures taken by Qatar to safeguard its sovereignty, security and the safety of its citizens. The attack on US military airbase, retaliation for America bombing Iranian nuclear sites at the weekend, led to the closure of airspace above Qatar, Bahrain and Iraq and the diversion of some flights. US President Donald Trump said the US would hold talks with Iran next week, with a possible agreement on the table about Tehran's nuclear programme. 'We're going to talk to them next week, with Iran. We may sign an agreement, I don't know. To me, I don't think it's that necessary. I mean, they had a war, they fought, now they're going back to their world. I don't care if I have an agreement or not,' Mr Trump said during a news conference at the end of a NATO summit in The Hague. Courtesy Call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. FUJII Hisayuki by H.E. Mr. Hamza Adan Haadoow, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia
On June 25, commencing at 4:00 p.m., for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. FUJII Hisayuki, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Hamza Adan Haadoow, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows: At the outset, State Minister Fujii welcomed Permanent Secretary Hamza's visit to Japan and expressed his expectation for further cooperation at the United Nations, including the Security Council, with the Federal Republic of Somalia, as Somalia is serving as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for two years from 2025. In response, Permanent Secretary Hamza expressed gratitude for Japan's support so far and stated that Somalia would like to further deepen cooperation in the international arena including the Security Council, and bilateral cooperation. State Minister Fujii, while mentioning Japan's efforts, stated that Japan would like to continue cooperation with Somalia towards its peace and stability. In response, Permanent Secretary Hamza expressed his expectation for Japan's cooperation.
