UK and allies to announce new sanctions against Russia

Al Arabiya9 hours ago

Britain and its allies at the Group of Seven (G7) countries are expected to announce further sanctions against Russia on Tuesday, the British government said, stepping up pressure on Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
'We are finalizing a further sanctions package – and I want to work with all of our G7 partners to squeeze Russia's energy revenues and reduce the funds they are able to pour into their illegal war,' Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to say in the announcement.
Britain has already sanctioned over 2,300 individuals, entities and ships as part of sanctions against Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
'We should take this moment to increase economic pressure and show President (Vladimir) Putin it is in his - and Russia's interests - to demonstrate he is serious about peace,' Starmer is expected to say.

India's commerce minister heads to UK to fast-track free trade deal

New Delhi India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has embarked on a two-day visit to the UK to accelerate talks on a long-pending bilateral free trade agreement, his office said on Wednesday. Launched in January 2022, the FTA negotiations between India and the UK were set to conclude the same year, but despite more than a dozen formal rounds, talks have stalled over issues like tariffs, rules of origin and mobility for services professionals. A deal-in-principle was announced in May by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart, Keir Starmer. Goyal's UK visit comes in the 'backdrop of the announcement' and 'aims to accelerate bilateral engagements and harness emerging opportunities,' the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement. The minister is scheduled to meet UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds to 'review the progress made in the ongoing FTA negotiations and chart out a clear, time-bound road map for its finalization and implementation.' If Goyal's visit succeeds in producing an implementation road map with timelines, he would be able to start negotiations on a bilateral investment treaty with the UK, Anupam Manur, professor of economics at the Takshashila Institution in Bangalore, told Arab News. 'A working FTA for India is extremely important, especially in a scenario where global trade uncertainty is at an all-time high due to the trade war and tariffs imposed by President Trump,' Manur said. 'In this scenario, an FTA with the UK delivers greater certainty to India, provides market access to an important large economy, and will also act as a leverage point for trade negotiations with the US.' India has so far signed 14 free trade agreements with 25 countries, along with several regional and preferential trade pacts covering additional nations. These include agreements with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Japan, South Korea, Australia and the UAE. Talks are also ongoing with the Gulf Cooperation Council and the EU — with commitments to conclude talks in 2025.

Francesco Risso Leaves Marni After a Decade as Creative Director in Another Fashion World Shakeup

Francesco Risso is stepping down as Marni creative director after a decade, the OTB Group announced Tuesday, marking yet another high-level creative shift in the fashion world. OTB Chairman Renzo Rosso called Risso 'a unique designer and an artist at heart,' adding, 'I wish him only the best for the future.' The statement did not say when a new creative director would be announced. It comes amid a number of high-level creative director shifts in the fashion world, including at Gucci, Chanel, and Balenciaga, but also within the relatively small OTB group based in the northern region of Veneto and controlled by Diesel founder Rosso. Within OTB's portfolio, Simone Bellotti took over as creative director of Jil Sander in June, replacing Lucie and Luke Meier, and Glenn Martens has replaced John Galliano as creative director of Maison Margiela. During his decade at Marni, Risso captured the brand's fantastical whimsy with surreal, sculptural elements and artistic collaborations that incorporated the brand's codes like fur detailing and floral elements. His shows were often elaborate sets that defied the runway convention–in one instance gathering personal friends of the brand around a banquet table wearing a favorite personal garment that had been customized, or seating guests on randomly grouped wooden chairs. OTB credited Risso with 'a bold creative evolution that renewed womenswear, expanded menswear, and was characterized by immersive shows and experiences.' Risso's 'instinctive approach to emotional storytelling brought a deeper sensitivity to the brand and welcomed a wide range of artistic collaborations that opened the house up to new cultural spaces,' the statement said. Risso said, 'Working at Marni taught me how to build with feeling and how powerful true collaboration can be.' Thanking the Marni team, he added, 'And here's to more extraordinary journeys ahead!' without hinting at his next move.

Russia says captured another village in Ukraine's Sumy region

Russia's army said Wednesday that its forces had captured another village in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region, where Moscow has stepped up its offensive in recent weeks. The Russian troops captured Novomykolaivka in Sumy, a settlement around four kilometers (two miles) from the Ukraine-Russia border, the defense ministry said on Telegram. The advance of Moscow's army comes as peace talks have stalled and as Russia rejects the unconditional truce demanded by Kyiv and its European allies. Ukraine has dismissed Russia's demands as 'ultimatums.' Russia first tried to capture the regional capital Sumy at the start of its offensive in 2022, before being pushed back in a Ukrainian counter-offensive later that year. In 2024, Kyiv used the Sumy region as the base for its own armed incursion into Russia's western Kursk region. After recapturing the Kursk territory earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his army to once again advance across the border to push back Ukraine's forces. Sumy is not one of the five Ukrainian regions that Russia claims to have formally annexed. Russia's defense ministry said Wednesday that its troops had also captured the settlement of Dovgenke in the Kharkiv region.
