Mithi desilting scam probe to cover silt removal since 2006
"It will reveal how remote control duped Mumbai," said Samant.
The issue was raised again through a calling attention motion by BJP MLC Prasad Lad, who first brought up the issue leading to the setting up of the SIT. Highlighting the seriousness of the matter, Lad demanded that the investigation into this scam be extended right from 2012, adding the scam may be worth over Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,200 crore.

Samant said for three years the SIT examined 3.4 lakh photographs and could see only dumpers but no silt.
He further said the norms for dumping silt were changed in 2012.
"Till 2012, the silt would go to the Deonar dumping ground where even today it is possible to know how much has been dumped since 1930. In 2012, the norms allowed dumping on private sites. Since 2006, Rs 331.73 crore have been spent on the Mithi River desilting work. We have currently checked expenditure from the year 2019 to 2024. The period from 2006 is still to be probed and it will be done," he said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Anil Parab objected to the issue being repeatedly raised in the House. "Probe all, investigate everyone. But do not be lenient on those who come for your mercy. There should be equal justice to all," said Parab, pointing out that many leaders who were part of the BMC standing committee and passed the tenders were now with the ruling alliance.
Bhai Jagtap of Congress said that the MCOCA should also be applied to the arrested contractors and engineers of the BMC. Reading out the names of the accused, Samant said Jai Joshi was out on bail while the mastermind Ketan Kadam, who owns nightclubs and other properties, is in judicial custody.
"Ketan Kadam has a partner called Santino Morea. We want to assure the people of Mumbai, no guilty individual will be left out in the open. We will ensure that SIT will expose how 'remote control' duped Mumbai," said Samant.

Haridwar madrassas sealed; HC seeks affidavits promising no activity
Dehradun: Uttarakhand high court on Tuesday directed operators of unregistered madrassas in Haridwar to submit an affidavit to the district minority welfare officer confirming they would not conduct religious, educational or prayer activities until recognised by govt. The court said the state would determine the future use of the now-vacant premises. Justice Ravindra Maithani issued the directive while hearing petitions filed by operators of Jamia Rajbia Faiz-ul Quran, Darul Quran, Nuru-ul Huda Education Trust, Sirajul Quran Arabia Rasdiya Society and Darul Uloom Sabria Sirajia Society. They said the district administration sealed their premises without following due process, even though the institutions functioned as educational centres. One of the petitioners said, "We are not running religious centres illegally. We have applied for registration but are waiting because the madrassa board has not acted." The petitioners requested that the seals be removed temporarily until the board processed their applications. The state said these institutions were running without valid registration while conducting religious and educational activities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Orthopedic Doctors Urge Seniors To Use This 'Smart' Cane ReadyWalker Learn More Undo It clarified that only unregistered, privately run madrassas had been sealed. Recognised madrassas continued to function and receive grants from govt. A state counsel told the court, "The sealed madrassas were conducting religious teaching and prayers without registration. This violates the law." Over 135 unregistered madrassas across Uttarakhand, including 79 in Haridwar, were sealed earlier this year under the Uttarakhand Madrassa Education Board Act, 2023, which requires all madrassas to register. Officials said the sealing followed inspections but several operators claimed they were not given notice or heard before action was taken. In a previous hearing, HC allowed the unsealing of four madrassas—one in Dehradun and three in Haridwar—on the condition that the operators submitted undertakings not to resume any activity until registration was completed. The court said only fully recognised institutions could operate, and no interim relief would be granted otherwise.

‘Chitta' test now must during police recruitment in HP
1 2 Shimla: In a bid to curb the problem of drug menace, the Himachal cabinet, headed by chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, on Tuesday decided to introduce mandatory dope testing for Chitta (heroin) during police recruitment. All new govt employees will now also be required to submit an undertaking confirming they do not consume Chitta. Sukhu also made it clear that strict action would be taken against any govt employee found involved in drug-related activities. The council of ministers was informed that the drug abuse situation in Himachal Pradesh remains under control, with narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (NDPS) cases accounting for 9% of the total cases, significantly lower than Punjab's 20%. During the present state govt's tenure, 45 such cases were registered, in which properties worth Rs 42.22 crore belonging to individuals involved in drug-related activities were attached. This marks a more than two-fold increase in the number of cases and a three-fold increase in the value of properties seized compared to previous periods. Also, under the provisions of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic(PIT)-INDPS Act, a total of 44 detention orders were issued and successfully executed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo During the meeting, the police, social justice and empowerment, and health departments made presentations on the steps being taken to combat drug abuse in the state.
