Narromine preview, best bets and inside mail for Sunday April 27, 2025
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Muswellbrook trainer Luke Thomas has found the ideal races – and jockey – to ensure himself of a perfect score when he takes on the 600km round trip to Narromine on Sunday.
The former rodeo rider has secured the services of Clayton Gallagher to steer his westbound duo He'sthechief and Lily Bobtail in their respective assignments.
He'sthechief is guaranteed his share of admirers in Sunday's The Australian Lighthorse Maiden Plate (1100m) after a brave run on debut at Scone 13 days ago.
'I thought the horse did a tremendous job,'' Thomas said,
'He had no luck whatsoever.
'He went forward then he had to prod him back a bit and he over-raced and then that other horse got up inside him and caused him to be three-wide.
'It was a high pressure race, they went hard the whole way.
'It was disappointing because I thought, given his trials, we had a fair opinion of him that he should be able to nearly win his first start – but you get over that.
'If anything it should have improved him, just with the match fitness and picking up some race experience,'' Thomas said.

He'sthechief is a son of the speedy mare Exalted Mollie whose four wins came at distances ranging from 900m to 1100m, one each at Yeppoon, Rockhampton, Emerald and on the Springsure Cup day undercard; the same day as Epaulette won the Golden Rose 1500km away in Sydney.
Stablemate Lily Bobtail, meanwhile, is ready, able and deserved of a win on Sunday after a string of honourable performances from Scone to Taree and elsewhere in recent times.
The daughter of Harry Angel boasts form around the likes of some handy types, none more promising than Saturday's Highway participant, Speedy Henry.
'I've been trying to find an excuse to put her in the paddock but can't find one,'' Thomas said.
'She's trained on the farm and doesn't go to the track much, she spends a lot of time either swimming or in the paddock and is thriving.
'She only had three starts when I bought her off Godolphin and only paid $5000 for her so she's worked out being a good buy.
'She keeps running a cheque every time she goes around and she's had some terrible runs in terms of getting caught wide.
'I think next prep, all being well, I think if she improves again, she could measure up to Highway grade.'
Lily Bobtail may have herself once worn the Royal Blue colours of Sheikh Mohammed but she undoubtedly has 'cerise' coursing through her veins.
Her first three dam-sires all stood at Woodlands at one time namely Commands, Lonhro and English Derby winner Quest For Fame.
On top of that, her fifth dam is one of Woodlands' most prized and celebrated 'foundation mares' in Shaybisc.
Apart from her still current deeds in the breeding barn, Shaybisc was an outstanding filly/mare.
She won nine races altogether including five stakes-races and has the unusual honour of beating a Melbourne Cup winner (Just A Dash) and Golden Slipper winner (Dark Eclipse) along the way.

NARROMINE INSIDE MAIL
RACE 1: MAIDEN HANDICAP (1300m)
MISSY MOSS (4) turned in her best effort in three runs for Mack Griffith, last start at Mudgee when a close and closing second in a 1200m maiden. That's not to imply the two before that weren't anything but sound. Won't get a better chance to win one. Expect short odds and rightfully so. JASPER'S WAY (2) was safe in the market when he finished seventh in that same race at Mudgee on April 20. That was only his first run so we can perhaps anticipate improvement.
BET: MISSY MISS to win, exacta 4 to beat 2.
RACE 2: CG&E MAIDEN PLATE (1100m)
HE'STHECHIEF (8) had trialled rather well prior to his April 14 debut at Scone hence why he opened up at $3.30, although he drifted out to SP at $5.50. Raced handy but was passed late, clocking in a length and tail off the winner in fifth spot. Drawn well again and gets a top jockey again. MICRO MIKKI (4) passed a lot of horses at Edenhope on March 8 at his last run for Ciaron Maher. Won a trial at Dubbo by five-and-a-half for Brett Robb. BEST DEFENCE (1) and BLUTINS (2) have claims.
BET: HE'STHECHIEF to win, quinella 4,8.
RACE 3: F&M MAIDEN PLATE (1100m)
IMASTATEMENT (9) resumed at Dubbo on April 7 in a 1000m maiden (and not a bad one either), leading until the very last stride when pipped by a race-fit and progressive horse named Dusty Vermerr who goes around in race 6. Anyway, as for Imastatement, barrier one and Clayton Gallagher are two huge advantages. Former Queenslander ANTILLES (1) has some reasonable runs on her CV Trialled well and should/could be getting home hardest of all here. She's a granddaughter of Danni Martine by the way.
BET: IMASTATEMENT to win, trifecta 9 (standout) to beat 1,10,12 (boxed).
RACE 4: CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1600m)
HIDEYO (10) is a former Kris Lees-trained galloper, still owned by Australian Bloodstock, but with Todd Howlett now. In fact, her last five runs have been under Howlett's management, the most recent of which was a length third in a 14-horse mile race at Dubbo. Mile is her best trip, this is just a beautiful race for her. Ditto that last bit vis-a-vis GREEN PINEAPPLE (2) who is absolutely ripe for 1600m third-up off a closing third over 1400m at Orange.
BET: HIDEYO to win, exacta 10 to beat 2, quinella 2,10, box trifecta 2,4,6,10.
RACE 5: DIGGERS CUP (1300m)
POWER BEAU (7) has four wins, three seconds and two thirds in his 16 starts. To be fair, we should say all those wins and placings are from 13 starts with Wayne Brown. He ran a huge race in the Country Champs Heat three runs ago and as for last start, he was a half-length off winning a Newcastle Benchmark 68. PLENITUDE (13) has some standouts runs on his CV He ran a really good race in a Highway back on Five Diamonds day. Fast forward to the present and he was fourth to Gallant Star on the WRA Qualifier.
BET: POWER BEAU to win, quinella 7,13, Daily Double 1st Leg 7, 2nd Leg 4.
RACE 6: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1100m)
LILY BOBTAIL (11) was once part of the Godolphin string. She had four runs for James Cummings including a pair of thirds at Gosford and Wyong respectively. In her time with Luke Thomas, her CV reads as one win, two seconds and two thirds and that's from 10 starts so it's all pretty rosy. Her last three starts have been close to career best, she deadset deserves one. Interesting that Lily Bobtail's last win came at the expense of Nevermista who resumed with an entirely emphatic win at Tamworth. DUSTY VERMEER (6) is a similarly progressive horse drawn well.
BET: LILY BOBTAIL to win, exacta 11 (standout) to beat 6,15 (boxed).
RACE 7: BENCHMARK 50 HANDICAP (1300m)
PODCAST (4) raced four times for Chris Waller from November to January. Three of them were pretty underwhelming but he did manage a 15500m maiden win at the Sunshine Coast two days after Christmas. His first and only run so far for Dar Lunn, was an outstanding third at Dubbo when ninth of 12 at the 400m. That was 1200m, this is 1300m – tick. EILRAHC (14), or Charlie backwards, has only won once in 15 starts but he has placed six times and five of them are seconds. This is bang on his trip and he ran a noteworthy fifth in rather a strong Class 1 at Orange last start.
BET: PODCAST to win, quinella 4,14.

Supercars results: Broc Feeney wins the Perth Super 440 to extend his championship lead
Don't miss out on the headlines from Sport. Followed categories will be added to My News. Australia's Broc Feeney turned the tables on his young New Zealand title rival Matt Payne to win Sunday's feature race at the Perth Super 440 and extend his lead in the 2025 Supercars championship. Four weeks after Payne held off Feeney in a drag finish to the chequered flag to win at Symmons Plains in Tasmania, the pair traded places after an incredible finish to the 200km main race at Wanneroo Raceway. This time, the 22-year-old Feeney got his Chevrolet Camaro across the line first by half a second to remain on track to become the second youngest driver to win the Supercars title. There's still a long way to go, of course, and with a new format in place this season, no-one is taking anything for granted but so far, Feeney has established himself as the one to beat. 'I just executed the start and just sort of managed the race in those first two stints,' Feeney told Fox Sports. Broc Feeney has turned the tables on his Supercars rivals to win the Perth Super 440. Picture: Getty 'It was probably going to be pretty smooth sailing home (but) with the pit stops and the safety car and Matt was super quick at the end there. 'I was a bit worried in the sprint shoot out at the end. He got one off on me last one so it's good to get one back on him this time.' Following on from his victory in Saturday's second 120km sprint, Feeney has already won five races this season to stretch his lead in the championship standings to 72 points over his Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Will Brown. Payne, a 22-year-old rising Kiwi star, is currently in third spot, 123 behind Feeney. Starting from pole position, Feeney made a brilliant launch when the lights went out to take immediate control of the 16th race of the season. The only times he relinquished the lead in the 83-lap event was when he made his two mandatory pit stops but the introduction of a safety car, when Cooper Murray came to a halt because of a mechanical problem, set the stage for a nail biting 14-lap sprint to the end. Will Brown (L) chats with race winner Broc Feeney. Picture: Getty The lead that Feeney had built up was instantly wiped away as the field came together for the hectic dash to the finish, but he held his nerve to seal the win and celebrate in style. 'I didn't have much left in the end. My rears were pretty cooked,' Feeney said. 'I finally did a good burnout, so hopefully it was all right for the crowd. I was practising with the (NRL) Bulldogs earlier this week, doing burnouts on grass, so it was good to finally let one rip.' Payne got a lucky break when the race was yellow flagged because it enabled him to make a cheap pit stop and jump to second spot. 'I'd never given up, absolutely not. When I saw the car that was stopped down at turn six, I thought, oh my God, we've actually got a real chance. And then I came out and I was behind Broc and I thought no way we're in second,' Payne said. Feeney extended his championship lead with the win. Picture: Getty 'I had already accepted 11th or 12th place was going to be where we were going to finish so it's tricky, very tricky but very, very lucky. 'I just wanted to keep pounding Broc there at the end. I was trying everything I could. but we just didn't quite have the car underneath us. 'We stayed close, but we fought right to the end, but I'm just really happy to be standing on the podium.' A tearful James Courtney also benefited from the safety car to finish third and secure his first podium in two years. 'I'm not going to lie, I did cry on the in-lap,' Courtney said. 'It's been a tough 18 months for these guys putting in so much work and to be able to finally repay them with the results has been amazing.' Laurie plots spring plans for Group 1 stars Treasurethe Moment and Vinrock
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Group 1 stars Treasurethe Moment and Vinrock continue to impress astute trainer Matt Laurie, as spring campaigns sharpen into focus. The Mornington trainer has a traditional spring path being considered for triple Group 1-winner Treasurethe Moment, with Yulong boss and owner Yuesheng Zhang to decide on a Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate grand final. 'It's got to be confirmed and agreed by the boss … Memsie (Stakes), Makybe (Diva Stakes), Turnbull (Stakes) and they're deciding whether she goes to the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate,' Laurie said. Treasurethe Moment has won nine of 11 starts in a stellar career to date, including the Group 1 VRC Oaks, Vinery Stud Stakes and Australian Oaks. 'If she doesn't win another one (Group 1) we got to be pretty happy with what she has done so far,' Laurie said. 'She has obviously got to take on the older horses now, it's a different league, so we'll see. 'Nine of 11 you'd think she's got something to offer.' Treasurethe Moment is $8 and $11 respectively in Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup markets. Yulong has a stranglehold on the Cox Plate with reigning champion Via Sistina ($2.50) and new acquisition Carl Spackler ($26), a multiple American Grade 1 winner being aimed at Australia's best race. Treasurethe Moment is ready to start trot and canter work under saddle after a week on the treadmill. 'She's come back looking better than she did last time,' Laurie said. 'She's buzzing like she's ready to have a canter, so she must be feeling well.' Group 1 Sires' Produce winner Vinrock has also returned in great shape. 'I've been doing some flat, dressage work in the arena,' Laurie said. 'He had his first trot and canter around our track at the farm (last Saturday) and he felt great.' Laurie has the Group 1 Golden Rose (1600m) earmarked as the first spring target for Vinrock but there are many other options following the September feature at Rosehill. 'I'm not sure. I felt he should be running in a Golden Rose and you're deciding whether you're going up to eight (1600m) or coming back to the six (1200m) furlongs,' Laurie said. Meanwhile, Laurie has Sun Setting chasing a hat-trick in a 1200m Benchmark 64 on King's Birthday Monday at Mornington. Laurie saved Sun Setting from a tougher assignment at Flemington last Saturday, saddled Soft Love in race instead and missed by the barest margin. Sun Setting finished second in two summer outings at Mornington before a short break. The promising daughter of Pierata returned with a Moe maiden win and repeated the effort last start on Mornington home turf. 'She's going really well and she looks well placed,' Laurie said. 'I don't know what price she is but she'd be short enough … I thought no point running them against each other (Soft Love and Sun Setting), as they were both good chances. 'I think she would've given the Flemington race a good shake … we thought a midweek meeting at Mornington, where she has run well before, was a smart move.' Sun Setting is a $3.40 favourite in the 1200m Benchmark 64 at Mornington. Originally published as Mornington trainer Matt Laurie plots spring plans for Group 1 stars Treasurethe Moment and Vinrock

Canterbury previews: Payne's prized pair primed to parlay his success
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. FRESH from his Saturday win at Royal Randwick, trainer David Payne aims to carry over his success into Monday's King's Birthday meeting at Canterbury via two of the stable's mid to long term prospects. Two-year-old duo Cosmonaut and Funky Tilda were both selected and purchased by Payne at the Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale in 2024. They were the only two lots which Payne signed off on the day. Whereas Cosmonaut was a bargain at $17,000, Funky Tilda was a much-admired filly at the sale. So much so that her $115,000 price-tag made her the third most expensive yearling of the 162 sold. 'She is quite well bred,'' Payne said. 'She's by Hellbent who is doing well out of a quite a nice damline.' Funky Tilda was the seventh foal of her Flemington-placed dam, Another Sunday, whose best performer to date is the Magic Night runner-up Blanc de Blanc who happens to be a daughter of Hellbent's famous father – I Am Invincible. Funky Tilda also boasts Flight Stakes winner Oohood as well as crack two-year-olds King's Legacy, Zizou and Not A Single Doubt as relatives. Despite the presence of so many precious horses on her family tree, Rory's Jester, Redoute's Choice, Canny Lad, Snippets and Rory's Jester among them, Payne is playing a longer-term game with his blueblood miss. Though quietly confident she will hold her own on debut in Monday's ATC Chase The Dream Maiden Plate (1250m), an awkward draw coupled with a lack of experience may hold her back for now. 'She will need a race,'' Payne said. 'She'll have that run then she'll most probably go to the paddock. 'She is still a bit of a baby but just from what she has shown me in work, she'll most probably run 1600m.' Payne is understandably more bullish on the winning prospects of Cosmonaut which lines-up in a must-see ATC Drinkwise Plate (1250m) to start the day. Payne's colt will be the only one of the eight participants with race experience having two starts on his C.V ahead of today's third. The baldy-faced bay caught the eye in more ways than one when clocking in third at his debut in the $200,000 Inglis 2YO Challenge on Scone Cup Day. He followed up with another honourable effort, this time at Kembla, when making ground late on a testing heavy (8) surface. 'Both times he found the line well which is good,'' Payne said. 'He is still learning. He did a few things wrong both times but I think he'll be better with the step-up in distance (on Monday). 'Just looking at him as a type, he looks like he would get up to a mile (but) he has drawn well on Monday and if he can maybe box-seat, that would be ideal.' Cosmonaut is a member of Cosmic Force's second crop of foals that arrived during the spring of 2022. He is the second foal of his dam, Vodianova, who won twice at Moe over 1623m. His most famous relative is Handsome Ransom who collected the Black Opal Preview and Black Opal Stakes, beating Exceed And Excel, in his first two starts. Cosmonaut is rated a $23 chance in Monday's opening race at Canterbury which is assured a widespread audience given the presence of the much touted $1.4 million yearling Central Coast. The Chris Waller-trained colt is a son of the all-conquering Wootton Bassett and the second foal of the triple Group 1 winner Sunlight. Sunlight's first foal is Dawn Service who won the Listed VRC Exford Plate (1400m) on Makybe Diva Stakes Day at Flemington on September 14. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ SHOULD Dollar Magic finish runner-up, again, at Canterbury on Monday, she will have equalled racing's perennial placegetter Tom Melbourne's extraordinary tally of 14 seconds. Scott Singleton's mare posted the 13th second of her career when beating all bar Zealously when she resumed at home on the same day as her stablemate Melody Again won the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic. Dollar Magic's numerous seconds have been as close as a nose and as far off the winner as 2-1/4 lengths. Dollar Magic is chasing another placing at Canterbury on Monday. Photo: Bradley Photos. Sometimes it has been a better horse that has beaten her, sometimes not. 'There have been a few of them that have been quite cruel seconds,'' Singleton says. 'Definitely when Fire Star beat her last prep was a cruel one, but she always does her best so I can't begrudge her. 'If she wins on Monday she is getting towards $600,000 and she hasn't won one fancy race. She's won it from just keeping on turning up and trying hard so she's terrific.' Dollar Magic has finished on the podium at 20 of her 25 starts. One of her four wins was at Canterbury which was also the venue for her only taste of black-type racing on New Year's Day. 'She got caught a little bit with no cover in the Canterbury Sprint and I thought she toughed it out really well,'' Singleton said. 'She's come on a little bit from that first-up run and gets there in really, really good order so I expect her to run well. 'Whether she can beat Zealously is the thing. It went terrific at Scone the other day but if the track is going to be a bit softer than maybe it was at Scone, I think it will suit her more than him.' Dollar Magic will have company in the float from Scone to Sydney from her in-form stablemate Fiorsum Fred which could and perhaps even should be on a hat-trick leading into the ATC Ranvet Handicap (1550m). Fiorsum Fred will be back in action at Canterbury on Monday. Photo: Bradley Photos. 'He was good the other day (in the Gunnedah Cup), he only needed another half a stride,' Singleton said. 'He has been going particularly well at home and pulling up well from his runs. He's in good shape.' For all his recent heroics Fiorsum Fred was allotted 62.5kg in Monday's mission. 'I know it sounds a lot when you say it but after the 3kg comes off and when you look at what everyone else has got comparative to you, I don't think he is that badly treated to be honest,'' Singleton said.
