AFL locks in date for blockbuster State of Origin return between Victoria and Western Australia
AFL State of Origin is set for a return next February. After months of speculation, 7NEWS Melbourne's Mitch Cleary has confirmed Saturday, February 14 as the day that state footy will make its long awaited return after what will be 27 years by then. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: AFL State of Origin set for return next February. Cleary revealed it will be Western Australia that takes on the Big V when the game kicks off next year. 'All parties are in the final stages of negotiation that will see WA host Victoria at Optus Stadium,' Cleary told 7NEWS Melbourne on Monday night, '7NEWS understands the AFL and WA government held productive talks late last week, the last haggling down to the exact split on who foots the bill, and gate-takings. 'The will likely see Harley Reid the star attraction for Victoria, in Perth. The headlines just write themselves. 'The game is expected to count towards the players' pre-season schedule, excusing them from a club pre-season game.' The Agenda Setters' Carlton Wilson reported in May that AFL captains had expressed a desire for an event this year, but the league did not want to shoehorn it into an already full calendar. 'I reckon it's going to happen and I reckon it's going to happen in February next year. And I reckon it's going to be West Australia versus Victoria.' Wilson said at the time. 'The AFL captains said they wanted it earlier this year. The AFL want to be convinced that (the 18 club captains) are going to support this.' Before AFL State of Origin was scrapped, the great rivalry over the years was between Victoria and South Australia, with the Victoria and Western Australia rivalry a close second. 'I think because obviously Adelaide has Gather Round at the moment, and that's going to happen again at least next year, and we think for many years to come, I think the view is WA versus Victoria would be the perfect fit for next February,' Wilson said in May. The buzz around State of Origin started earlier this year when the Indigenous All Stars took on Fremantle at Optus Stadium in an exhibition match in February. In 2020, an exhibition game was played between Victoria and a combined All-Stars team as a bushfire-relief charity game.

‘Not on': Legend scolds star after ‘inappropriate touching' footage
The AFL Integrity Unit have closed off an investigation into an incident of 'potential inappropriate touching' by a Brisbane player to a Sydney opponent on Saturday. The incident occurred shortly after Sydney's Nick Blakey had taken an intercept mark deep inside Brisbane's forward line. As Blakey lay on the Gabba turf, Lions forward Henry Smith stood over the top of him before stumbling backwards and then pushing up off his rival and standing the mark. The moment however raised eyebrows after a still image and slow motion footage appeared to show Smith making contact with Blakey's backside. Footage of the incident was shown on Monday night with AFL 360's Gerard Whateley and Garry Lyon discussing what had unfolded. 'This is the fleeting interaction on Saturday between Nick Blakey and Henry Smith,' Whateley said. 'But this is the angle as to why the AFL needed to investigate what had happened. 'We went through a couple of different phases with this during the day.' Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon said the young Lions star was lucky to avoid being sanctioned by the league. 'The first photo I looked at I went 'hang on a minute'. And then the other bit of vision which turned up I said 'hang on a minute...',' he said. 'They needed to look at that and this young man, I think that's unnecessary. The AFL have cleared him of any wrongdoing, there's no complaint from Sydney or Nick Blakey. 'I think it's unnecessary, I just thought he lost his balance and put his hand down for balance initially. 'It's just not what we need. If they had of fined him it wouldn't have surprised me. In the end they've probably sent a message to him pretty clear to say 'hey this is not on in any circumstance'.' The league on Monday moved to put a full stop on the matter and they closed off the investigation. A statement from the league read: 'Following inquires by the AFL Integrity Unit into an incident during the Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans match on Saturday, it has been determined that no further action is required.' Brisbane said earlier on Monday in a statement: 'The club is aware the AFL Integrity Unit is looking into an alleged incident from Saturday's match against Sydney. While this process is being conducted, the club will not be commenting at this point.'
