Asia-Pacific news agencies seek cooperation to tackle global changes, tech challenges
ST. PETERSBURG, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The 19th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) kicked off in St. Petersburg on Thursday.
During the two-day event, representatives of member news agencies will hold in-depth discussions on how news agencies can respond to global changes and technological challenges.
Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of Russian president, read out Russian President Vladimir Putin's congratulatory letter to the conference at the opening ceremony. Putin noted that currently, objective and timely information is vital for enhancing mutual trust and understanding among countries and their peoples.
As the world's largest alliance of news agencies, OANA has long played a significant role in global news dissemination. He said that he hopes this conference, through constructive exchanges, would explore and formulate promising cooperation projects, pushing mutually beneficial cooperation to a new level.
In his opening remarks, Fu Hua, president of Xinhua News Agency, pointed out that the Asia-Pacific region is the locomotive driving economic globalization, the hub of world economic growth, the anchor of global development and stability, and a highland for cooperation, with an important role in addressing global challenges.
Xinhua calls on news agencies in the Asia-Pacific region to join hands to enhance mutual trust, advocate inclusiveness, promote cooperation, and contribute to win-win outcomes, Fu said.
Fu said that Xinhua will earnestly perform its duties, deepen partnership with member organizations, and well establish and utilize multilateral mechanisms like the World Media Summit, the Global South Media and Think Tank Forum and the China-Central Asia News Agency Forum to jointly write a new chapter in news agencies' exchange and development.
Andrey Kondrashov, director general of Russia's TASS news agency, said that the world is in a critical period of profound transformation and information environment transition, with cyber threats and disinformation testing the public trust in media.
In-depth exchanges and cooperation among Asia-Pacific news agencies, along with joint exploration of new technologies such as AI and big data to drive media industry transformation, will not only bolster their own development but also hold significant importance for safeguarding regional and global security and prosperity, he added.
Melissa Fleming, UN under-secretary-general for global communications, said in a video address that the current world is volatile, and news organizations and practitioners are facing multiple severe challenges, making strengthened media dialogue and exchanges particularly crucial.
She expressed her hope that while abiding by journalistic ethics, media outlets around the world can provide global audience with more valuable and positive news information.
Vu Viet Trang, general director of Vietnam News Agency, told Xinhua that the world is changing rapidly, with technological transformation advancing at an unprecedented pace. As important sources of information, news agencies need to enhance efficiency of information delivery through technological innovation while ensuring the accurate and timely transmission of information, she said.
The Asia-Pacific region is playing an increasingly prominent role on the international stage, and regional news agencies should voice more strongly on regional and international issues, she said, noting that this is the common mission shouldered by news agencies in the Asia-Pacific region.
Dzhaldinov Askar Muratovich, deputy director of the Kazakhstan President's TV and Radio Complex, said as global news media face multiple common challenges, cooperation and exchanges offer opportunities to tackle these challenges. News organizations should not only fulfill their responsibilities in information dissemination, but also actively influence social development and policymaking, he added.
During the conference, the delegates visited an OANA photo exhibition, where Xinhua News Agency's photographic works were on display.
OANA consists of 41 news agencies from 33 countries and has its origin in the Organization of Asian News Agencies established in Thailand in December 1961.

Malaysia, Russia to sign MOU on disaster management
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will work closely with Russia to boost its disaster management through joint training, knowledge exchange and coordinated emergency response, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said a memorandum of understanding between the two countries is expected to be signed some time this year. 'As Asean Chair this year, Malaysia remains committed to regional leadership in disaster response,' he told a joint press conference with Russian Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (Emercom) Minister, Colonel General Alexander Kurenkov yesterday. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the national disaster management agency (Nadma) committee chairman, said Malaysia welcomed Russia's offer on capacity-building programmes for our officers, including a specialised training course in Vladivostok in September. 'We are exploring broader collaboration, including technology transfer in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications for disaster monitoring,' he added, Bernama reported. He said Malaysia and Russia agreed to conduct joint search and rescue training between the Special Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) and Russia's RUS-03 team. Ahmad Zahid expressed appreciation to Russia for the offer to train the SMART team and the invitation to allow senior officers from the Fire and Rescue Department to participate in a specialised course at a leading university in St Petersburg. The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed appreciation for the working relationship between Nadma and Emercom, particularly through regional initiatives under the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group and the Asean Committee on Disaster Management. Meanwhile, Kurenkov said several key areas were discussed during his meeting with Ahmad Zahid, including the professional training and education of firefighters and rescue personnel. 'Emercom's academies offer a wide range of programmes for international specialists, not only for firefighters and rescuers but also for medics, dog handlers and UAV operators,' he said. He also emphasised Emercom's interest in understanding Malaysia's modern approaches to fire and rescue training, noting the value of exchanging best practices. He said both sides are committed to improving mutual early-warning capabilities and risk communication related to natural disasters, particularly in the areas of prevention, prediction and risk management using the systems of space monitoring and distant zoning of Earth.

Tax expansion poses limited direct impact on auto sector
KUALA LUMPUR: The upcoming expansion of the service tax scope, effective next month, will have a limited direct impact on Malaysia's automotive sector, according to CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd. The firm said this is because vehicle sales are already subject to a 10 per cent sales tax, while maintenance and repair services incur an eight per cent service tax. "That said, there may be a slight increase in dealership and showroom rental costs due to the measure, although we believe the impact will be minimal. "Indirectly, however, weaker consumer sentiment could weigh on new vehicle sales in the second half of 2025 (2H25)," it added. CIMB Securities also highlighted that the Malaysian Automotive Association has forecast a 4.5 per cent year-on-year (YoY) decline in total industry volume (TIV) to 780,000 units in 2025. This is attributed to demand normalisation and a reduced industry order backlog. The firm said MAA also flagged global economic uncertainty, exacerbated by US-China trade tensions, as a risk to Malaysia's economic outlook. In addition, the government has postponed the implementation of the revised open market value (OMV) calculation from January 2025 to January 2026. CIMB Securities views this delay as a short-term positive for the sector, as the new OMV formula could raise the average selling price of locally assembled vehicles by 10–30 per cent, based on MAA estimates. The firm also expects a sharper seven per cent YoY decline in TIV to 760,000 units, mainly due to potential headwinds such as the planned removal of the RON95 petrol subsidy in 2H25. "Despite this, we expect demand in the sub-RM100,000 segment to remain resilient, supported by national brands and selected entry-level Japanese models. "The government's plan, outlined in Budget 2025, to retain subsidies for at least 85 per cent of RON95 users should help cushion the impact and support affordability in the mass-market segment. "Consequently, we project national brands to retain a dominant 64.5 per cent market share in 2025, with non-national marques accounting for the remaining 35.5 per cent," it said. Furthermore, CIMB Securities believes the removal of fuel subsidies could further accelerate battery electric vehicle adoption. The firm also expects a potential spike in electric vehicle (EV) demand in the fourth quarter of 2025 as buyers rush to benefit from tax savings. Full duty exemptions for imported EVs are set to expire by the end of 2025, and the government is unlikely to extend them beyond the December 31, 2025 deadline. "Within our coverage, Sime Darby Bhd is well-positioned to ride this wave, supported by its expanding EV line-up across brands like BMW, Mini, Porsche, BYD, and Volvo," it said. Overall, CIMB Securities has maintained a "Neutral" rating on the auto sector due to a subdued growth outlook amid intensifying market competition. It noted that Sime Darby remains its top sector pick, supported by earnings recovery in the Australian mining sector, a broad EV portfolio, its stake in Malaysia's auto market leader Perodua, and the potential monetisation of non-core and land bank assets. Moving forward, the firm said key catalysts for the sector include the strengthening of the ringgit against the US dollar and Japanese yen, a reduction in interest rates, and favourable government policies aimed at reviving domestic demand. Key downside risks to its call include depreciation of the ringgit, interest rate hikes, and weaker consumer sentiment stemming from the potential subsidy rationalisation programme and new taxes.

JAKARTA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is strengthening its promotional efforts to tap into the growing global tourist market, as the Southeast Asian archipelago continues to struggle to catch up with neighboring countries in attracting international visitors. Last year, Indonesia received around 14 million foreign tourists, while Singapore welcomed 16.5 million, Malaysia 25 million, Vietnam 17.6 million, and Thailand 35.5 million. According to data from Statistics Indonesia, the majority of foreign tourists in 2024 came from Malaysia, followed by Australia, Singapore, China, and Timor-Leste. This year, the country is targeting 14 to 16 million foreign tourist arrivals to boost foreign exchange and encourage economic growth through the tourism sector. Several popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, including the island resort of Bali, the Borobudur Temple in Central Java, and Raja Ampat in the easternmost region of Papua, all offer stunning views. Meanwhile, some of the leading entry points for foreign tourists to Indonesia are Batam in the Riau Islands Province, located near Singapore and Malaysia, as well as Bali and Jakarta. In a bid to increase the global competitiveness of Indonesian tourism, Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said recently that the government is committed to further strengthening its promotional efforts in international markets. Moreover, the ministry has undertaken several diplomatic initiatives to boost the country's tourism industry. Late last month, Indonesia's Tourism Ministry and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation. "The MoU is expected to increase the exchange of visits between the two countries, specifically through facilitating promotional activities carried out by the government and business actors," Wardhana said last week at the ministry. She added that advancing the Indonesian tourism industry requires a strong spirit of collaboration and collective commitment among ministries, institutions, and friendly countries, with the hope that tourism can become an economic and social force that benefits the entire community. Indonesia also held bilateral meetings with several countries during the 123rd session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, which took place in Spain late last month. The ministry discussed collaboration opportunities with several nations, including Spain, India, Mexico, and Tunisia, during the forum. "We will continue to move forward with the principles of sustainability, inclusiveness, and global competitiveness, while ensuring that the growth of this sector aligns with efforts to preserve culture and the environment," she added.
