Indy 500-themed welcome center nearing the finish line

Yahoo06-05-2025

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Greatest Spectacle in Racing returns for its 109th running this May. During May, the entire Hoosier state rallies together for the greatest 500 miles in motorsports.
In Vigo County, a special Indy 500-themed welcome center is rounding turn four as it's nearing completion.
'This is kind of a chance to get a look at the greatest spectacle in welcome centers,' said Blake Dollier, Indiana Department of Transportation Public Relations Director for the West Central Office.
Here on I-70 just past the Indiana and Illinois state line, you may not hear the sounds of a V-6 twin turbo engine whipping around a 2.5-mile track, but you can hear the sounds of crews making their final touches on the nearly $53 million Indy 500-themed Clear Creek Welcome Center.
'This is something people are going to drive in Indiana into the crossroads of America and get to experience the many traditions our state has to offer, all quiet literally under one roof. This is something we have been working on for quite some time. It's been a long time, and we are really kind of approaching that finish line and checkered flag of completion on this welcome center,' said Dollier.
Dollier said this isn't just a welcome center but rather a tourist attraction for people driving through the Hoosier state.
'It's Indy 500 themed, telling the history of the state and the greatest spectacle in racing. Again, we like to think of this as the greatest spectacle in welcome centers because you have the Borg Warner trophy out front and different memorabilia from the Indy 500… How exciting, as well, is this for Vigo County and the surrounding area. It's like a mini tourist attraction where you get to experience the month of May and experience the Indy 500,' said Dollier.
He also added that the new renovations to the center will also give more truck drivers spaces for a quick pit stop.
'This is also part of the state of Indiana's plan to increase truck parking. We have 178 truck parking spaces that are going to be available at the Clear Creek Welcome Center. And, with that being said, that's about an increase of almost 80 spaces,' said Dollier.
INDOT said they expect the final laps on this project to be completed sometime this summer.
'We are really proud of the work that has been done on this facility, and we are really excited to continue to be able to showcase that as things get opened up and as things get moving… We just encourage everybody to get your hopes up and come out and see this if you get a chance once things are open. We really, really look forward to it,' said Dollier.
Once the welcome center opens, it will not only feature a replica of the Indy 500 winning trophy, the Borg Warner, but it will also feature a scoring pylon and an IndyCar.

Woman Walks Up to a Brand-New Ford Lariat. Then She Learns it has a New 'Luxury' Feature

Dealerships always highlight the new features and perks of car models to lure people into buying. Sometimes these features don't necessarily improve the car's performance so much as its aesthetic or vibe. Still, they're packaged as something you can't miss out on. Often these features are described as a 'luxury.' Car manufacturers toss around the word luxury like a football on a Sunday. It may irritate some, but many buyers want a luxurious car, so it's also just good marketing. Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use . That doesn't mean you won't get called out for calling something standard a luxury feature. In a TikTok with nearly 6,000 views, Madi (@surpriseforddeals) claims the new Ford F-150 Lariat's way of greeting drivers is an example of its 'luxury.' But is this a new feature or has this been around? Is your truck excited to see you? Trending Now 'Do People Not Read the Owner's Manual Anymore?': Woman Buys New Honda. Then She Tries Filling It Up With Gas 'This Should Be Illegal': Customer Gets Approved for 2024 Jeep Wrangler. Then An Expert Exposes the Reality of Financing In her post, Madi showcases how the new Ford F-150 Lariat automatically turns on its headlights when you approach the truck. She begins by asking viewers, 'Have you ever been greeted by your truck?' Madi then proceeds to hype how the Ford Lariat automatically lights up when its key gets close to the vehicle, suggesting this is a reason you should buy one—from her. According to her profile, Madi works for a Ford dealership. 'Welcome back to your truck. That's the luxury of Lariat,' Madi concludes. Luxury or standard? While the F-150 Lariat's light-up greeting is arguably aesthetically pleasing and potentially promotes safety, many people who commented on Madi's post disagree with the suggestion that it's remarkable. 'Literally most manufacturers do this,' one TikTok commenter said. 'Oh, a 2004 Lexus LS does the same thing, nothing new here,' another added. A third shared, 'Luxury of Lariat? My $40k outback from 2020 does this.' The skeptics are correct: this isn't a new feature. Ford F-150s have even reportedly had this feature since at least 2021. It used to be called 'approach lighting'; now it's known as 'welcome lighting.' So why is it being highlighted as a selling point? Wouldn't it make more sense to simply focus on the F-150's reliability, towing capacity, or perhaps its warranty? This dives into the bigger conversation about how consumers have become increasingly driven to buy vehicles based on their technology. There's something of a tech race going on in vehicle manufacturing. Every brand wants to have the newest, most desirable tech under the hood and inside the passenger compartment. Critics say these features are used to distract from the fact that making dependable and reliable cars is slowly becoming a lost art. They claim manufacturers don't build them like they used—and there may be truth to that. But cars didn't used to have backup cameras , either, and that tech has unquestionably saved lives (and bumpers). If consumers want a vehicle that lights up when they approach, why not give it to them? Motor1 has contacted Madi over Instagram and TikTok direct messenger. We also reached out to Ford via email. Mitra Chem is raising $50M for its cheaper, domestic battery materials

Battery material startup Mitra Chem has raised $15.6 million of a planned $50 million funding round, according to a regulatory filing seen by TechCrunch. Mitra Chem is developing materials to make lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries store more energy. Automakers have begun to turn to LFP in an attempt to trim costs from electric vehicle battery packs, which can make up a significant portion of a car's cost. Currently, all LFP material comes from outside the United States, with the vast majority coming from China. TechCrunch reached out to Mitra Chem for comment, but did not receive an immediate reply. The new funding round comes at a challenging time for battery startups. Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) haven't grown at the rate some automakers and analysts had predicted. Simultaneously, the Trump administration and Congressional Republicans have mounted an assault on EVs and battery manufacturers. The House version of the reconciliation bill would sunset EV tax credits in 2025 or 2026, depending on how many EVs automakers have sold. The Senate has yet to weigh in on the bill. Mitra Chem previously raised a $60 million Series B that closed in 2023. GM led the round, with In-Q-Tel, Social Capital, and others participating. Chamath Palihapitiya's Social Capital led the startup's $20 million Series A in 2021. South Korean battery materials company L&F Corporation is a likely participant in the new round, having invested $10 million in March, Korean Economic Daily has reported. The company was awarded a $100 million grant from the Department of Energy last year to build a battery materials plant in Michigan. According to federal records, that award is still on the books but hasn't yet been paid out.

Steve Lauletta Details 23XI Racing's Growth In 2025

Tilton/Getty Images) When 23XI Racing announced it was expanding to three full-time entries with the addition of rookie Riley Herbst, it showed the entire sport that this team has its eyes set on the future. The expansion raised eyebrows as 23XI expanding its existing relationship with Monster Energy, and it also gave Toyota another entry. But 23XI operates differently compared to every other team in the Nascar Cup Series. Even the company's social media appears different, having the look of an epic sports dynasty. 'We have a younger, more diverse fan base at 23XI that are interested in music, fashion, sneakers, food, art and all of those things,' 23XI Racing President Steve Lauletta said. 'We want to show up at all of those places.' Team co-owners Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan are in the midst of a complicated antitrust lawsuit with Front Row Motorsports against Nascar. As of now, 23XI Racing has three charters and their status is in flux. But they are operating as business as usual at the moment. In its first year as a three-car team, 23XI's performance has been up and down. All three drivers are winless. Bubba Wallace has shown more raw speed, but poor luck has resulted in an average finish of 18.7, while Tyler Reddick is still winless. Rookie Herbst is 34th in the standings, the third lowest of all full-time drivers. For the first time, 23XI fielded four cars with full-time Craftsman Truck Series driver Corey Heim driving the No. 67 car at Kansas and Nashville. In doing so, the team welcomed yet another duo of new sponsors, Robinhood and Chief's. 'We took on a lot by going to a third full-time car this year,' Lauletta said. 'We wanted to make sure we didn't distract or take away our focus from what we were doing for our first four years with Tyler and Bubba. "Having the ability to sign a development talent like Corey Heim had us know we'd have a fourth car and get him some seat time in the Cup Series. It gave a lot of our folks at Air Speed a chance to go to the racetrack. Yes, it's extra work for all of us, but it's important for us to continue the development of what 23XI is on and off the track.' 23XI Racing has made a name for itself for welcoming new partners to Nascar since its inception in 2021. The team inked major partnerships with companies like Door Dash and Columbia Sportswear, amongst others as the years have gone on. 'We try to be innovative and different in everything we do,' Lauletta said. 'It's how we think and deliver to our partners and how we build our brand. I've said since the beginning that our goal is to build a brand in 23XI that happens to be a race team, not a race team brand. It's proven that our fan base is different from the core Nascar fan.' Last year, Reddick captured the regular season points title and qualified for the Championship 4 for the first time in team history. While he didn't win it all, it showed the team is plenty capable of competing for championships. 'We're capable of winning a lot of races,' Lauletta said. 'Denny laid out a five-year plan when we started building this team in late 2020, and that was by 2025 to be a consistent race-winning team and championship-contending team. We got there in four years, and we need to continue that growth.' Even with the tough luck through 15 races, Reddick and Wallace are sixth and 10th in the standings, respectively.
