Travelling to France? Here's Why You Must Book Your Visa Appointment Online

News1806-06-2025

Last Updated:
France now requires online booking for visa appointments to simplify applications for long-stay and short-stay visas.
France has launched a new digital system that makes it mandatory for all visa applicants to book their appointments online. The updated process, now in force, is intended to make applications faster, more organised, and user-friendly.
Whether you are applying for a short-stay Schengen visa or a long-stay national visa, this rule applies to all foreign visitors. The move is also expected to cut down on intermediaries and streamline documentation.
Here's a detailed look at how the new process works.
Step 1: Check If You Need A Visa
To begin the process, applicants should head to the official Visa Wizard page. This online guide helps you figure out whether you need a visa, and if so, which type suits your travel purpose. It also outlines the documents you'll need to prepare and provides details on the applicable fees. If you have visited the Schengen Area recently, you can use the Visa Calculator tool to check how many days you're still allowed to stay.
Step 2: Confirm Eligibility Before Scheduling
Before moving forward, applicants must ensure that the Visa Wizard confirms their need for a visa. Only those who meet the eligibility criteria outlined by the tool can book an appointment. This step helps prevent invalid applications and streamlines the overall process.
Once the appointment request is approved, applicants will receive an email containing the date, time, and location of their visa appointment. To secure the slot, they must reply and confirm their availability. If confirmation isn't sent, the appointment will be automatically cancelled.
Before attending the scheduled visa appointment, applicants must complete their visa application on the official France-Visas website. On the day of the appointment, they should bring a printed copy of the application form along with all required supporting documents. Incomplete paperwork or mismatched personal details may lead to delays or rejection.
At the visa appointment, officials will review your documents, take biometric data (photo and fingerprints), and collect the application fee. However, if you've provided fingerprints for a Schengen visa within the past 59 months, you may be exempt from appearing in person.

Planning A Summer Trip To Europe? Essential Travel Rules And Guidelines You Must Know Before You Go In 2025

photoDetails english 2921196 Updated:Jun 24, 2025, 01:05 PM IST 1 / 12 Planning a European vacation this summer? With new travel norms, safety guidelines, and country-specific requirements, being prepared is more important than ever. Here are the key rules you must know to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey across Europe in summer 2025. Check Visa and Entry Requirements for Each Country 2 / 12 Many European countries are part of the Schengen zone, but some are not. Always check the latest visa regulations for each country you plan to visit. Post-Brexit, for example, UK entry rules are different from France or Italy. Also, in 2025, the new ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is expected to be fully operational for visa-exempt travellers — make sure you've registered before your trip. Be Aware of Local COVID-19 Protocols (If Any Remain) 3 / 12 Some countries might still recommend mask-wearing in public transport or require vaccination proof for high-risk locations like hospitals or old-age homes. It's wise to carry digital or physical copies of your COVID-19 vaccination certificate and check each country's health ministry website for updates. Understand the City Tourist Taxes 4 / 12 From Rome and Paris to Amsterdam and Barcelona, tourists are charged a small fee per night, usually collected at your hotel or Airbnb. The tax varies based on the city and the type of accommodation. It's advisable to include this cost in your budget planning. Learn About the Transportation Rules and Rail Passes 5 / 12 Many travellers opt for Eurail passes, but each country's railway services might have specific reservation requirements. For example, high-speed trains in France or Italy often need separate seat bookings even if you hold a pass. Make sure to check the local rail rules, luggage limits, and ticket validations. Carry an International Travel Insurance 6 / 12 Having international health or travel insurance can save you from unexpected expenses like medical emergencies, flight delays, or lost baggage. In many Schengen countries, having proof of insurance coverage is a mandatory visa requirement. Respect Cultural Norms and Dress Codes 7 / 12 From cathedrals in Spain to mosques in Turkey and monasteries in Greece, certain religious and cultural sites require specific dress codes — like covering shoulders or knees. Being respectful of local customs not only avoids discomfort but enhances your travel experience. Keep an Eye on Your Belongings in Tourist Hotspots 8 / 12 Always be cautious with your belongings, especially in crowded areas like train stations, metro lines, and tourist attractions. Use anti-theft bags, keep your valuables close, and avoid flashing expensive gadgets. Follow Updated Rules for Carrying Cash and Using Cards 9 / 12 If you're carrying €10,000 or more in cash while entering or leaving the EU, it must be declared. Also, while credit/debit cards are widely accepted, it's smart to inform your bank about international transactions and keep some local currency handy for small vendors. Book Accommodation in Advance During Summer Peak Season 10 / 12 The summer season attracts tourists from all over the world. Popular cities like Paris, Santorini, and Venice can get fully booked weeks in advance. Booking your hotels and intercity travel early ensures better prices and more options. Know Emergency Numbers and Your Embassy's Contact Info 11 / 12 In Europe, 112 is the universal emergency number. Also, keep your country's embassy or consulate contact details handy in case of lost documents, legal troubles, or any other assistance you may need. 12 / 12 Europe offers a diverse, vibrant, and breathtaking travel experience. But the key to enjoying it to the fullest lies in smart preparation and staying updated with travel rules. Bookmark this guide and pack your bags wisely — Europe is waiting!

Entry curbs slow down foreign travel

New Delhi: Abhay Kumar Khanna, a retired general manager of Indian Railways who holds a 10-year visa to the US and has already travelled to over 30 countries, had planned a family vacation in Europe this summer. He was in for a rude shock when he applied for a Schengen visa . "I had applied for a Schengen visa to the embassy of Hungary, and to my utter amazement and disbelief, I was denied a visa on the grounds of 'suspicious activities,' said Khanna, adding he suffered a financial loss of over '2 lakh on account of non-cancellable air tickets and hotel bookings. Khanna is not alone as increasingly more Indians head overseas. Data released by the ministry of tourism showed that January to December 2024 saw Indian nationals' departures growing 8.44% year-on-year to around 30.2 million. This was higher than the pre pandemic departure figures of around 26.9 million. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo Following the Covid-19 pandemic and in the absence of Chinese travellers, many countries laid out the red carpet for Indians. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) While countries are still talking about boosting Indian arrivals, over the past year, there seems to be a greater scrutiny, and entry requirements seem to be tightening through visa rejections, newer policies and more checks. Live Events Over the past few months, Singapore has made it mandatory for Indian applicants to get on a video call with authorised visa agents to ensure their authenticity. Confirmed hotels and flights are now mandatory for a UAE visa. ET reported this month that US visa seekers across categories, including business and leisure, are facing mounting hurdles as appointment wait times crossed a year in some regions. Rescheduling has become tougher, and interviews have become more detailed and stringent. Some recent viral videos of Indians misbehaving with locals in certain overseas destinations haven't helped, said industry insiders. Ravi Gosain, president of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), said there was a noticeable increase in visa scrutiny, particularly in the Schengen region, due to some recent incidents involving inappropriate behaviour by a small fraction of Indian tourists . "While not widespread, this has led to more cautious processing and even some visa denials," he said. "The vast majority of Indian travellers are respectful, but we must ensure that the actions of a few do not affect the reputation of many," he added. Visas have also acquired a geopolitical dimension. "Countries that want our tourists like Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Vietnam have either dispensed with visas for Indians or allowed easier entry through e visas," said Anil Kalsi, board member of Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH). "The UAE seems to be focusing more on high-end, high spending tourists from India. Schengen is a different ball game. Visa appointments for Italy are hard to swing. Tourist friendly countries like France, Switzerland, Spain and Germany seem to be more efficient than others in granting visas," he added. Jimeet Ved, founder of travel company Outofofficedaku handles Schengen visa applications for European countries besides Japan and dispenses travel advice on social media. He said while the application process is smooth for Japan, countries such as Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Belgium can be more stringent than the rest for Indian travellers. These constraints have boosted arrival numbers for other countries that have comparatively easier entry requirements. In 2024, Vietnam welcomed about 500,000 Indian tourists, a 297% jump compared to pre pandemic levels. India was the top primary market for Sri Lanka in December last year with 52,881 arrivals, accounting for a 21.3% share. As per reports, India became the third largest market for Thailand in 2024 thanks to its visa free arrivals policy. Thailand welcomed around 2.1 million Indian travellers last year, around 30% more than 2023.

Schengen visa refused? A simple guide to making an appeal

A growing number of Indian travelers are seeing their Schengen visa applications rejected. If you have received a refusal, you can file an appeal to contest the decision. The Schengen visa allows travel across 27 European countries. According to Schengen rules, every applicant has the right to appeal if they disagree with the decision. The refusal notice contains instructions about where and how to send an appeal. In most cases, an appeal must be submitted to the consulate or embassy that rejected the visa. Here's how the process works. Understanding the Refusal Notice Each Schengen visa refusal notice contains specific reasons for the rejection. Common reasons include: Incomplete or inconsistent documents Lack of proof of financial means Unclear purpose of travel No proof of accommodation Inadequate travel insurance Read this notice carefully. The reasons listed here are the starting point for making a strong appeal. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) When to File the Appeal Each Schengen country has its own deadline for submitting an appeal. It must be submitted in the language required by the issuing country and should include: Your personal details and visa application number A clear explanation of why you disagree with the decision New or updated documents, such as bank statements, accommodation details, or invitation letters Travel itinerary and insurance information if applicable Make sure every claim is backed by supporting evidence. Submitting the Appeal Send the appeal to the consulate or embassy that refused your visa. Follow their specific instructions. You can often submit the appeal by post or in person. Confirm the submission method before sending. What Happens After You Appeal Once the appeal is received, the authorities review the new documents and explanations. The processing time varies but can take a few weeks. They will notify you of their decision once the review is complete. If the appeal is successful, your visa will be granted. If it is refused, the consulate or embassy will inform you of further options, which may include submitting a fresh application or, in rare cases, appealing to a court.
