Derrick Lewis vs. Tallison Teixeira point of interest: Heavyweight hands
The main event in Nashville features a heavyweight showdown between Derrick Lewis and Tallison Teixeira.
Stepping onto the scene as an unabashed brawler, Lewis has shown some signs of improvement underneath the scary destructions that often take place in his fights. An athletic mover for his size, Lewis can throw accurate knees and head kicks with little signs of struggle.
A downright scary distance closer when he chooses to be, Lewis can force his opponents into the fence whether or not he lands on them, almost in a juggernaut-like fashion. With a frame that is hard to control in close, the 40-year-old slugger does his best work when striking off the breaks, maintaining a dangerous potency in small spaces that go deep into the fight.
Lewis also has an appetite for the counter, showing that he's not beyond setting traps and playing possum in order to draw his opponents into his uncanny power. That said, Lewis will still need to respect what is coming his way this Saturday.
Enter Teixiera.
Although Teixiera is clearly lacking in the experience department, I can see why many are high on the prospects of this young heavyweight.
Despite Teixeira's insane height, he actually moves quite well for a big man and is not afraid to utilize tools like a long jab. The Brazilian also packs wicked power in his rear hand, but kicks, particularly to the body, may serve Teixeira well in this spot.
Teixeira may not go to the body as much as I'd like, but he has shown some decent change-ups from front teeps to Thai kicks that help exentuate his length. Teixeira will blitz forward in combination when he's feeling in stride, but he'll need to be careful about crowding his work into the clinch – an area where Lewis can stage comebacks.
Derrick Lewis vs. Tallison Teixeira breakdown: Potential grappling threats
Considering the high potential for chaos on the feet, no one should be shocked if this party hits the floor.
Despite Lewis showing improved offensive wrestling and a surprising ability to hit inside trips in recent years, Teixeira is the more dangerous grappler on paper.
Although we've seen very little of Teixeira's ground game, the 25-year-old owns a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and has apparently been grappling since childhood. Teixeira only has one submission win on his resume, but between that win being an inverted triangle-armbar to his history training with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, I suspect that the lengthy heavyweight has solid dexterity to boot.
When it comes to wrestling, Teixeira has shown a servicable double leg he can go to when his opponents find their back against the fence. That said, effectively taking down and grounding someone like Lewis is easier said than done.
Traditionally dealing with fighters who are trying to grapple him, Lewis wields deceptively effective counter-grappling tactics. Whether he's hoisting his opponent up with a whizzer or shucking someone off with an underhook, Lewis has been hard to take down along the fence, as single legs or outside trips in open space seem to be what gets him grounded most.
Even when successfully taken down, Lewis still offers a lot of sneaky static in regard to stymying submission attempts and strikes.
Like a sand shark lying in wait, Lewis plays a conservative game when put on his back, keeping his arms in tight for safety while waiting for the right moment to explode (usually timing his opposition when they're in transition). Once allowed the smallest of space for momentum, Lewis will force his way to his base, turtling to a tripod position to stand.
As someone who is a fan of this style of get-up, I can tell you that it can be a nightmare to encounter when executed properly. For example, Lewis – while keeping his base firmly beneath him – will maintain an angle on his back that resembles a steep ski slope.
Although this tripod position invites back-takes to the naked eye, the downward slope Lewis keeps serves as a trap, making eager back takers ultimately slide forward and lose position (all while allowing the Texas native to stand back up). And if Lewis is able to end up on top via swimming for underhooks and shucking, then we could see a drastic shift in this matchup's momentum given the hellfire of ground-and-pound he provides.
Derrick Lewis vs. Tallison Teixeira odds
The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the undefeated fighter, listing Teixeira -245 and Lewis +186 via FanDuel.
Derrick Lewis vs. Tallison Teixeira prediction, pick
Considering how high the MMA gambling world gets over youthful, undefeated products, I can't say that I'm surprised to see Teixeira installed as the betting favorite despite being relatively unproven.
Should Teixeira come out and light Lewis up with some body kicks, then no one should be shocked if the Brazilian can find a finish soon after. That said, Lewis has had a penchant for both countering and coming back from effective body kicks – particularly against taller opponents.
In fact, whenever facing fighters of a similar height to Teixeira, Lewis has traditionally done fairly well (going 3-0 in the UFC opposite the likes of Travis Browne, Alexander Volkov and Jack May). And if Teixeira decides to revert to his base of grappling, then he could find himself in a frying pan-to-frier situation.
Despite logic saying that Lewis should be beatable on the ground, only a select few fighters (Daniel Cormier, Serghei Spivac and Jailton Almeida) have been able to truly out-grapple the American, as anyone who tries to grapple Lewis has traditionally done poorly.
Should Teixeira fall into this classic trap, then he'll need to be careful not to end up underneath Lewis, which is almost a death sentence given his lethal ground striking. I ultimately suspect that it's a strike off the break that sparks things off for Lewis, likely after having to survive some scares first.
The pick is Lewis by knockout in Round 2.
Prediction: Lewis inside the distance

Nikita Krylov vs. Bogdan Guskov prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ABC 9
Nikita Krylov and Bogdan Guskov meet Saturday in the main card opener of UFC on ABC 9 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 2-3 UFC main cards, 2025: 70-53-1 Nikita Krylov vs. Bogdan Guskov UFC on ABC 9 preview Krylov (30-10 MMA, 11-8 UFC) will aim to rebound from a first-round knockout loss to Dominick Reyes at UFC 314 in April. That result snapped a three-fight winning streak, which included stoppages of Alexander Gustafsson and Ryan Spann, with a unanimous decision nod over Volkan Oezdemir. ... Guskov (17-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) quickly righted the ship after being submitted by Oezdemir in his 2023 UFC debut. Since then, Guskov has finished three straight opponents: Zac Pauga, Billy Elekana, and the aforementioned Spann. Nikita Krylov vs. Bogdan Guskov UFC on ABC 9 expert pick, prediction Despite having excellent lighter-weight action fights below and above this bout, the UFC matchmakers and their love for force-feeding us big guys on Fight Night main cards strikes again. Although Krylov is a tenured light heavyweight who deserves some love, and Guskov is someone who brings the action, this fight will likely be the equivalent of one of those highway car crashes that everyone slows down to look at – but no one seems to remember by the time they get to where they're going. Krylov's last loss is probably giving pause to many, but given that I predicted and expected that exact outcome opposite Dominick Reyes – I can't say that I'm ready to condemn "The Miner" over it. In fact, I suspect that Krylov's last loss will only further encourage him to exploit the major weakness in Guskov's game, which is wrestling. For that reason, I'll pick Krylov to get back on track with a submission win in Round 1. Nikita Krylov vs. Bogdan Guskov UFC on ABC 9 odds The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the more experienced fighter, listing Krylov -202 and Guskov +172 via FanDuel. Shara Magomedov vs. Marc-Andre Barriault prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ABC 9
Shara Magomedov and Marc-Andre Barriault meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ABC 9 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 2-3 UFC main cards, 2025: 70-53-1 Shara Magomedov vs. Marc-Andre Barriault UFC on ABC 9 preview Magomedov (15-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) will look to bounce back from the first loss of his professional career, which came by unanimous decision against Michael Page in February. Prior to his first career setback, "Bullet" won his first four UFC fights, including stoppages of Antonio Trocoli and Armen Petrosyan, while earning two Performance of the Night and a Fight of the Night bonus. ... Barriault (17-9 MMA, 6-8 UFC) aims to stay in the winners circle as he enters on the heels of a first-round knockout of Bruno Silva. That result in May snapped a three-fight skid, successfully turning the page on what was a very rough 2024 campaign. Shara Magomedov vs. Marc-Andre Barriault UFC on ABC 9 expert pick, prediction Filling out the main card is a middleweight attraction between Shara Magomedov and Marc-Andre Barriault. Despite getting beaten in a lackluster affair his last time out, the glazing of Magomedov is still going strong as far as the betting line is concerned. Don't get me wrong: Magomedov has shown some improvements since stepping on the UFC scene and has been reportedly taking training more seriously this time around, so I suppose we should leave some room to be surprised. That said, Magomedov might not need to improve all that much if he wants to pass this test. Although I'd happily take Barriault over Magomedov if this fight were a few years ago, I'm not sure I can take a chance on the Canadian underdog after he's lost his once-vaunted durability. I would love to be wrong here, but the official pick is Magomedov by knockout in Round 1. Shara Magomedov vs. Marc-Andre Barriault UFC on ABC 9 odds The oddsmakers and the public heavily favor the hyped product, listing Magomedov -600 and Barriault +425 via FanDuel. Shara Magomedov vs. Marc-Andre Barriault UFC on ABC 9 start time, how to watch Magomedov and Barriault are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 1:10 p.m. ET. Asu Almabayev vs. Jose Ochoa prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ABC 9
Asu Almabayev and Jose Ochoa meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ABC 9 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 2-3 UFC main cards, 2025: 70-53-1 Asu Almabayev vs. Jose Ochoa UFC on ABC 9 preview Almabayev (21-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) suffered the first loss of his UFC career in his previous outing in March, where he was finished in the third round by Manel Kape. That result snapped a 17-fight winning streak. Prior to that setback, Almabayev won his first four UFC bouts, including a debut submission of Ode Osbourne. ... Ochoa (8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) enters on the heels of a second-round stoppage of Cody Durden in June. That fight marked a successful rebound from a unanimous decision loss to Lone'er Kavanagh, which was the only loss of his pro career. Asu Almabayev vs. Jose Ochoa UFC on ABC 9 expert pick, prediction Serving as a solid offering at flyweight is an impromptu fight between Asu Almabayev and Jose Ochoa. Almabayev was initially scheduled to meet an orthodox fighter in Ramazan Temirov, but will now face a southpaw in Ochoa. Although Almabayev is technically 2-0 opposite UFC-level southpaws, those stats can be deceptive when you dive into them (especially his controversial split-decision win over Zach Makovsky). It's also worth noting that Almbayev looked lost when facing Manel Kape – who primarily fought the Kazak from southpaw. Ochoa is obviously not the same fighter as Kape, but the Peruvian has an excellent striking arsenal and is still showing fight-to-fight improvements in the rest of his game given his young age. For that reason, I'll take a flier on Ochoa to further expose Almabayev's one-note game by producing a finish in Round 2. Asu Almabayev vs. Jose Ochoa UFC on ABC 9 odds Despite the oddsmakers opening the Kazakh fighter as a wide favorite, public money has been coming in on the Peruvian, listing Almabayev -117 and Ochoa -103 via FanDuel. Asu Almabayev vs. Jose Ochoa UFC on ABC 9 start time, how to watch Almabayev and Ochoa are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 12:40 p.m. ET.
