Derrick Lewis vs. Tallison Teixeira point of interest: Heavyweight hands
The main event in Nashville features a heavyweight showdown between Derrick Lewis and Tallison Teixeira.
Stepping onto the scene as an unabashed brawler, Lewis has shown some signs of improvement underneath the scary destructions that often take place in his fights. An athletic mover for his size, Lewis can throw accurate knees and head kicks with little signs of struggle.
A downright scary distance closer when he chooses to be, Lewis can force his opponents into the fence whether or not he lands on them, almost in a juggernaut-like fashion. With a frame that is hard to control in close, the 40-year-old slugger does his best work when striking off the breaks, maintaining a dangerous potency in small spaces that go deep into the fight.
Lewis also has an appetite for the counter, showing that he's not beyond setting traps and playing possum in order to draw his opponents into his uncanny power. That said, Lewis will still need to respect what is coming his way this Saturday.
Enter Teixiera.
Although Teixiera is clearly lacking in the experience department, I can see why many are high on the prospects of this young heavyweight.
Despite Teixeira's insane height, he actually moves quite well for a big man and is not afraid to utilize tools like a long jab. The Brazilian also packs wicked power in his rear hand, but kicks, particularly to the body, may serve Teixeira well in this spot.
Teixeira may not go to the body as much as I'd like, but he has shown some decent change-ups from front teeps to Thai kicks that help exentuate his length. Teixeira will blitz forward in combination when he's feeling in stride, but he'll need to be careful about crowding his work into the clinch – an area where Lewis can stage comebacks.
Derrick Lewis vs. Tallison Teixeira breakdown: Potential grappling threats
Considering the high potential for chaos on the feet, no one should be shocked if this party hits the floor.
Despite Lewis showing improved offensive wrestling and a surprising ability to hit inside trips in recent years, Teixeira is the more dangerous grappler on paper.
Although we've seen very little of Teixeira's ground game, the 25-year-old owns a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and has apparently been grappling since childhood. Teixeira only has one submission win on his resume, but between that win being an inverted triangle-armbar to his history training with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, I suspect that the lengthy heavyweight has solid dexterity to boot.
When it comes to wrestling, Teixeira has shown a servicable double leg he can go to when his opponents find their back against the fence. That said, effectively taking down and grounding someone like Lewis is easier said than done.
Traditionally dealing with fighters who are trying to grapple him, Lewis wields deceptively effective counter-grappling tactics. Whether he's hoisting his opponent up with a whizzer or shucking someone off with an underhook, Lewis has been hard to take down along the fence, as single legs or outside trips in open space seem to be what gets him grounded most.
Even when successfully taken down, Lewis still offers a lot of sneaky static in regard to stymying submission attempts and strikes.
Like a sand shark lying in wait, Lewis plays a conservative game when put on his back, keeping his arms in tight for safety while waiting for the right moment to explode (usually timing his opposition when they're in transition). Once allowed the smallest of space for momentum, Lewis will force his way to his base, turtling to a tripod position to stand.
As someone who is a fan of this style of get-up, I can tell you that it can be a nightmare to encounter when executed properly. For example, Lewis – while keeping his base firmly beneath him – will maintain an angle on his back that resembles a steep ski slope.
Although this tripod position invites back-takes to the naked eye, the downward slope Lewis keeps serves as a trap, making eager back takers ultimately slide forward and lose position (all while allowing the Texas native to stand back up). And if Lewis is able to end up on top via swimming for underhooks and shucking, then we could see a drastic shift in this matchup's momentum given the hellfire of ground-and-pound he provides.
Derrick Lewis vs. Tallison Teixeira odds
The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the undefeated fighter, listing Teixeira -245 and Lewis +186 via FanDuel.
Derrick Lewis vs. Tallison Teixeira prediction, pick
Considering how high the MMA gambling world gets over youthful, undefeated products, I can't say that I'm surprised to see Teixeira installed as the betting favorite despite being relatively unproven.
Should Teixeira come out and light Lewis up with some body kicks, then no one should be shocked if the Brazilian can find a finish soon after. That said, Lewis has had a penchant for both countering and coming back from effective body kicks – particularly against taller opponents.
In fact, whenever facing fighters of a similar height to Teixeira, Lewis has traditionally done fairly well (going 3-0 in the UFC opposite the likes of Travis Browne, Alexander Volkov and Jack May). And if Teixeira decides to revert to his base of grappling, then he could find himself in a frying pan-to-frier situation.
Despite logic saying that Lewis should be beatable on the ground, only a select few fighters (Daniel Cormier, Serghei Spivac and Jailton Almeida) have been able to truly out-grapple the American, as anyone who tries to grapple Lewis has traditionally done poorly.
Should Teixeira fall into this classic trap, then he'll need to be careful not to end up underneath Lewis, which is almost a death sentence given his lethal ground striking. I ultimately suspect that it's a strike off the break that sparks things off for Lewis, likely after having to survive some scares first.
The pick is Lewis by knockout in Round 2.
Prediction: Lewis inside the distance

Jiri Prochazka vs. Khalil Rountree Jr.: Odds and what to know ahead of UFC 320 bout

Jiri Prochazka will look to get one more step closer to reclaiming UFC light heavyweight gold when he takes on former title challenger Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 320. Jiri Prochazka vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. preview Prochazka (31-5-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) is back on the hunt for the light heavyweight title. In his first appearance of 2025, he stopped fellow former champ Jamahal Hill in the third round on the main card of UFC 311. The result put Prochazka back into the win column after a title challenge loss to Alex Pereira in a rematch at UFC 303 last June. Prochazka won the UFC title by submitting Glover Teixeira at UFC 275, and later vacated due to injury. Rountree Jr. (14-6 MMA, 10-6 UFC) is also on the path toward another shot at the division's title. He also enters this matchup on the heels of a win over Hill, whom he defeated by unanimous decision in the main event of the promotion's first trip to Baku, Azerbaijan, in June. Rountree Jr. earned his first crack at gold after a five-fight winning streak, which came against Pereria at UFC 307 – a fight he lost by TKO in the fourth round. Jiri Prochazka vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. odds According to FanDuel, former champion Prochazka is a -196 favorite to defeat Rountree Jr., who is a +152 underdog. Sean O'Malley: Cory Sandhagen will be surprised how strong Merab Dvalishvili is at UFC 320

Sean O'Malley knows how stern of a test UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili is. Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) will look to notch his third title defense when he takes on Cory Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) in the UFC 320 co-main event on Oct. 4 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. O'Malley is coming off a submission loss to Dvalishvili at UFC 316 – his second-straight loss to the champion. He says he learned the hard way the Georgian champion is deceptive. "How do I see that fight playing out? It's interesting, a striker vs. wrestler matchup," O'Malley said on his YouTube channel. "I fought Merab twice, beat him once, lost to him once, just kidding. Cory's got really good wrestling scrambles. He did really good against Umar (Nurmagomedov). He kept his hips high. He was able to scramble very well. I wouldn't say he really gassed, but he definitely got a little bit tired, whereas Merab, he just doesn't get tired. He really just doesn't, and he's freakishly strong. Very curious to see how those scrambles go. If Cory's well versed in the 50-50 (position), the leg game. "So, I'm curious if he will cause scrambles that way, maybe threaten some submissions that way to where Merab gets uncomfortable and maybe shoots less. As a striker, Cory and I have very similar styles in a sense, hard to take down, good timing. Watching Merab on the screen, not having him in front of you, you think he looks kind of sloppy. He looks like you're going to be able to stuff his shots or not even be there when he shoots, but that little Georgian finds a way under your shots. Even if you don't throw punches, he finds a way, and he's got really sneaky timing and good entrances. When he gets a hold of you, I feel like he's gotten better at getting a hold of people and not letting them up and disengaging." O'Malley leans towards Dvalishvili, but won't count out Sandhagen, who he called one of the most skilled guys in the UFC. "It's hard for me to wrap my head, I think it's a f*cking coin flip," O'Malley added. "I think, if I had to guess, I feel like Merab. If Merab goes out there and grabs a hold of him, I think Cory's going to be surprised how strong that little Georgian feels. But also, I could be completely wrong. Cory could go out there and hit some beautiful scrambles and completely make Merab look silly."

UFC on ABC 9: Petr Yan vs. Marcus McGhee odds, picks and predictions

In a 3-round bantamweight bout on the main card, Petr Yan and Marcus McGhee meet Saturday at UFC on ABC 9 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The prelims begin at noon ET (ESPN / ESPN+), and the main card at 3 p.m. (ABC / ESPN+). Their fight is expected to start at approximately 4:45 p.m. ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's UFC odds around the UFC on ABC 9: Yan vs. McGhee odds, and make our expert UFC picks and predictions. Records: Yan (18-5-0) | McGhee (10-1-0) Yan halted a 3-bout losing skid with a pair of unanimous-decision wins against Song Yadong (May 9, 2024) and Deiveson Figueiredo (Nov. 23, 2024). Since successfully defending his championship belt at UFC 267 (Oct. 30, 2021) against Cory Sandhagen, he suffered a split-decision loss to Aljamain Sterling at UFC 273 (April 9, 2022) that sent him into the 3-bout tailspin -- which included decision losses to Sean O'Malley (Oct. 22, 2022) and to Merab Dvalishvili (March 11, 2023) The 35-year-old McGhee has won all 4 of his fights since making his UFC debut against Journey Newson in April 2023. He has KO/TKO victories against JP Buys (Aug. 12, 2023) and Gaston Bolanos (Jan. 13, 2024), but he hasn't exactly fought the cream of the crop in the division. Facing the former division champ Yan is a major step up in competition. McGhee enters with a 2-inch reach advantage, while posting a 6.06-to-5.11 advantage in significant strikes landed per minute. Yan is much more accurate on those strikes at 60.30%, while McGhee checks in at just 49.41%, per Yan has a 1.61 takedown average, to just 0.46 for McGhee. Yan is accurate on those takedowns, too, posting a 49.06% mark. Watch this card with ESPN+ by signing up here. UFC on ABC 9: Yan vs. McGhee picks and predictions Fight result (2-way line or moneyline) Yan (-350) will cost 3½ times the potential return, which is too much risk for not enough reward. There is never a reason to justify spending so much for such a little return. Let's get a little more specific. Yan has had a penchant for dragging fights out, and doing the technical aspects well, wowing the judges into awarding points and winning rounds. In fact, Yan's past 6 fights have gone the distance, albeit against much, much stronger competition. McGhee could be in above his head against the former champ as he faces a major step up in competition. However, he went the distance in a unanimous decision victory vs. Jonathan Martinez last time out at UFC 309 (Nov. 16, 2024), so, he knows how to hang around. As such, let's roll with YAN BY DECISION/TECHNICAL DECISION (-185) for a much better value, although still slightly on the pricey side. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Over/Under Yes (-300): "Fight will go the distance" will cost 3 times the potential return. There is no value there, risking so much for such a small return. If you were to toss this into a multi-leg parlay, that would be the only way to justify playing such a heavy favorite line. Again, Yan is good at wowing the judges and scoring points based on certain technical aspects. He is impressive on takedowns, too, and betting YAN: OVER 1.5 TOTAL TAKEDOWNS (-145) is a particularly attractive prop to target. Visit MMA Junkie for more fight news and analysis.
