Michael van Gerwen PULLS OUT of tournament at last minute after shock first round exit as pal gives worrying update
It comes following his first round exit in the previous stage of the Players Championship, with his pal claiming the "belief isn't there".
Van Gerwen, 36, was beaten 6-5 by outside Dominik Gruellich.
It is the sixth first-round loss of this year's PDC ProTour for the Green Machine, who has lacked his usual form.
His compatriot Vincent van der Voort is a little concerned, as Van Gerwen is failing to show the attributes that made him one of the world's best.
Van der Voort said on the Darts Draait Door podcast: "When I see how things are going, the belief just isn't there.
"His presence is lacking, there's no aggression or passion in his game.
"It's just about throwing at the board and hoping for the best."
Van Gerwen's form means he is also at risk of missing out on qualifying for the finals night of Premier League Darts.
He currently occupies the final spot in the top four, but is just one point ahead of Nathan Aspinall.

Wolves vs Manchester City: Lineups and latest Premier League updates
Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of Wolves vs Manchester City. This summer has seen City bring in Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Trafford, as well as reserve goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and youngster Sveree Nypan. But last season Pep Guardiola had said he would 'quit' if he had too many players on the books and there is still plenty of work to be done moving players on. Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Scott Carson have left from the old guard, while Jack Grealish has gone on loan to Everton and January signing Vitor Reis has been loaned to sister club Girona. 'Pre-season is a dream,' Guardiola said. 'We have 40 players, it's not a problem. Pre-season is a paradise, 45 players is fine, everyone accepts it. 'From tomorrow, I have players who are not selected - it's not a problem because they are professionals, but it's not nice. 'You have to (have enough) that everybody competes to have the chance they can play on Saturday, that is when you get the best of them. 'When you have a lot of players, every week is (leave them) at home, it makes no sense. You have to find the right way.' James McAtee is expected to join Nottingham Forest and Tottenham have held talks over Savinho. Kalvin Phillips has no future at the club and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega is also expected to leave, given the competition for places. 'If they stay it's fine, but they know it,' Guardiola said 'The reality is that so they know it. 'If they stay, for me it's fine. It's not ideal but it's my job, I do it. But if they want to play regularly, maybe it's not going to happen.' Rodri's absence for most of last season was so telling in City's midfield and Guardiola said they have to careful in managing the 29-year-old's fitness. 'Rodri is so (close) to coming back but it is important his knee is perfect,' Guardiola said. 'He played Juventus (in the Club World Cup) and after six weeks he had an injury in his leg. We try to avoid that now. He needs to play minutes in training sessions. 'What we want for him is not to come back and step back. That would not be good because in this dynamic you cannot get rhythm. This competition is so demanding.'

Thompson beats Lyles in Olympic final rematch in Silesia
SILESIA, Poland, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Kishane Thompson laid down a marker ahead of next month's world championships when the Jamaican came out on top in the highly-anticipated 100 metres against Olympic champion Noah Lyles at the Silesia Diamond League meeting on Saturday. The men's sprint brought together American Lyles and Thompson for the first time since their unforgettable Olympic final last year in Paris, where Lyles beat his rival by five thousandths of a second. Add Kenny Bednarek into the mix, who recently clashed with Lyles, and this was a race that nobody wanted to miss. The two Americans had a heated moment at the U.S. Championships earlier this month, when Lyles stared down Bednarek coming to the line and received a shove in return at the finish. Thompson blasted out of the blocks and never looked like being beaten, while Lyles, with his typically slow start, came strong at the end but the Jamaican won in 9.87 seconds, with Lyles clocking 9.90, his season's best, and Bednarek finishing third.
