Donald Macdonald, one of Play School's first presenters and respected actor, has died aged 86.
Remembered as one of the original presenters when Play School launched in 1966, the Sydney-born actor died following a battle with cancer surrounded by family.
Journalist Craig Bennett shared the news on Monday, penning a heartfelt tribute to 'a true gentleman'.
'One of our showbiz greats left us at 12:45am today,' the post said.
'Donald Macdonald was a stalwart of stage and screen, who'd written smash hit plays like Caravan, dazzled on London's West End, and delighted millions over the decades with his starring turns on TV series like Play School where he was a presenter from 1966 to 1969.'
Spending his final days with his 'cherished' cousins Paula Duncan and Amelia Barrett, Bennett said Macdonald faced the cancer with 'copious good humour'.
'On Saturday we turned his hospital room into a party, laughs and smiles a-plenty, as Donald enjoyed some bubbly and lemon meringue pie!' Bennett wrote.
'Blue was always his colour, even in a hospital gown!'
Macdonald's career spanned more than 40 years, with credits including appearances on popular Australian TV shows such as Certain Women, The Box, Rake, Cop Shop, and Skyways.
He also featured in the cult film Alvin Purple and made a cameo in Superman Returns.
A highly regarded figure in the arts, Macdonald became an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1991 for his leadership as general manager of the Australian Opera.
In 2006, he was recognised as a Companion of the Order of Australia for his outstanding impact on national life and the creative industries, including his work in public broadcasting.
Fans remembered Macdonald as a 'lovely gentleman', posting condolences under the tribute.
'A very good man … was honoured to be part of the first national tour of Caravan. Some wonderful memories. Sending love to you all,' one fan commented.
'Thank you, Craig for letting us all know. A sad day for those Left Behind who loved this dear gentleman. It's beautiful Craig how you honour people that need to be honoured and reminds all of us of their rich and incredible life. May he rest in peace.' another added.
'We were VERY LUCKY to meet Donald through you both, get to know him, and be entertained by his lovely demeanour, sharp wit and of course his writing skills. What a lovely, gentleman.'

Robbie Dolan will sing at memorial service for fellow jockey Nikita Beriman's late dad Dennis

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Robbie Dolan has the voice of an angel. So it seems entirely appropriate that he will sing his own song Stay With Me at a memorial service for the late father of the Irishman's fellow jockey Nikita Beriman. Former trainer Dennis Beriman passed away late last month at age 78 after battling a respiratory illness and it turns out that he was a big fan of Dolan, as both a jockey and a singer. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'His wishes were to be scattered in the ocean with his wife (Sandy),' Beriman said about her dad. 'It'd be a real special moment. His last favourite song was 'Stay With Me' by Robbie Dolan so my family requested me to ask Robbie if he would sing while we scattered the ashes. 'I love Robbie but I actually felt a little weird asking him. I said to him, 'Robbie it's perfectly OK to say no, don't say yes just because you're my mate'.' Beriman need not have worried. Dolan is happy to sing at the memorial service, even though a date and venue are yet to be determined, with most of the family having to come up from Victoria. 'I don't know how Nikita heard my song but she obviously heard it and showed it to her father and he enjoyed it,' said Dolan, who progressed to the top 24 in The Voice in 2022 before being eliminated in the sing-offs. 'It's pretty cool actually to know that was his favourite song before he died. 'It's an honour to do something like that. It's very special for the family.' Beriman, 39, said the memorial service would likely be held near her dad's local pub, the Golden Beach Tavern at the Sunshine Coast. 'He lived with me for the past four years,' the Group 1-winning jockey said. 'The hardest part for me was that my Dad literally adored my daughter (five-year-old Ella) and my daughter absolutely loved her Poppy, she was a Poppy's girl. 'Even when he was in his hospital bed I got my Mum to send me through some videos of Ella saying 'I love you Poppy'. 'They used to have this little saying between each other, like Dad would say 'Hey Ella, guess what?' and she'd be like 'I know, you love me'. 'All he did was continually mention her and I think for me that's the hardest part because she doesn't even mention his name now. 'It's like it hasn't happened. She's just shut off and that's her way of dealing with it.' Beriman was meant to ride in the Group 1 Tattersall's Tiara last weekend on the John Dann -trained Adiella, however the four-year-old was scratched after banging her leg in the paddock in the days leading up to the 1400m feature for fillies and mares. 'I rode with Dad's necklace on, although I'm not superstitious or anything,' Beriman said about her four rides last Saturday at Eagle Farm. 'It would've been special to win on Break Free (which finished runner-up in the first race) given the fact that was Dad's favourite song and he had it as his ringtone for literally the last nine years. 'He loved everyone. Dad would not say a bad word about anybody, he'd always find the good in people.' Dennis Beriman, who was a trainer at Warrnambool for years before shifting to Queensland, was a typical old-school dad who was immensely proud of his kids but rarely praised them because that's not what most fathers from that generation did. One exception was when Nikita won her only Group 1, on Tears I Cry at Flemington in the 2007 Emirates Stakes (1600m), which was also trainer Ciaron Maher's first major success. 'That was the first time he said 'I'm proud of you' and I said 'don't start that s--t now',' Nikita recalled. 'What sticks out for me is when I won on Hearts Are Better in the 3YO Jewel (on the Gold Coast) this year and I came home and he said, 'you looked real good on that, darl'.'

Bridgerton star quietly enjoys winter getaway in Australia with actor boyfriend

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has been quietly enjoying a month-long getaway in Australia. The Irish actress, 38, shared a carousel of photos on Instagram of her June spent down under. 'Got to take a break for the first time in what felt like a really long time and had a magic month,' wrote Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington in Netflix's period drama. 'Feeling very sad to leave but very grateful to have had such a beautiful trip.' Coughlan went on to thank Tourism Australia for sponsoring two of her hotels, including Sequoia in Adelaide, where the star said she discovered her talent for jenga and love of outdoor jacuzzis, as well as Capella in Sydney, which she described as being 'in the middle of such a deeply cool city.' Capping off her post with some humour, and showing off her knowledge of coveted Australian-made TV productions, Coughlan wrote, 'But most importantly I got to visit Australia's most impressive cultural monument, the MAFS Apartment Building'. That 'monument' is more commonly known as the Skye Suites, where the Married At First Sight cast live (read: wreak havoc) for three months during filming of the Channel 9 televised experiment. While she didn't share any photos of her younger boyfriend, Coughlan was joined by 25-year-old actor Jake Dunn, who was in Australia filming Netflix's upcoming series My Brilliant Career, based on the beloved novel by Miles Franklin. Dunn shared his own photos of his stay in Australia two weeks ago, writing, 'My Brilliant Career coming soon to @netflix.' After they were first spotted together in January during an outing in London, UK media reported the couple had been dating since at least August last year, when they were spotted together at a London music festival, and were believed to be set up by a mutual friend, fellow actor Louisa Harland. Harland, 31, starred as Orla alongside Coughlan in the much-loved Irish comedy series Derry Girls, which ran for three seasons. Dunn is best known for his role in the Disney+ series Renegade Nell, which was axed after just one season last year. Coughlan was previously linked to her Bridgerton co-star Luke Newton, however she dismissed the speculation in an interview with Time last year. 'A lot of people really want me to marry Luke,' she admitted. 'We have this gorgeous friendship. We have such a love for one another and this experience that I'll never have with someone else again. 'Isn't it gorgeous that a man and woman can have that sort of relationship with one another?'

Australian Olympic great Leisel Jones goes public with personal news about depression struggles

Australian swimming champion Leisel Jones has revealed she is battling with 'high-functioning depression' and only days ago she 'wanted to end it all'. Jones is an Olympic gold medallist and seven-time world champion who burst onto the international scene as a gun 15-year-old breaststroker. Only a day ago the 39-year-old took to Instagram to reveal the depths of her struggles, posting a phot of herself with tears streaming down her face. 'Stay until tomorrow,' she said. 'It's one of my favourite sayings. Yesterday was one of my worst days and I wanted to end it all. 'I think I have been battling high-functioning depression for a little while now and have just gone back to work with a psych. 'In the dark moments I promise myself to just stay until tomorrow and it's amazing what the next day can bring. 'Today was spectacular. I had some free time after work and went on an hour long walk along the beach. No goals. No plans. Just enjoy the sunshine and the view. 'I was really missing my walking buddy (former swimmer) Meagen Nay but walking by myself was enough. 'It changed my whole perspective on things. 'So if life has felt like a kick in the c*** lately, promise me you'll stay until tomorrow 🤞🏽.' Jones' candid words have been praised by Lifeline Australia, which commented on her post to say that her revelation could help many others struggling with depression. 'Thank you for your vulnerability and courage in sharing this, Leisel. Your words will no doubt bring comfort to many who are quietly battling their own struggles. Lifeline is always here for you.' Jones's celebrity friends were also quick to show their support. Fellow swimmer Giaan Rooney wrote: 'This post will help so many others darling, but just as importantly, I hope it helps you see how truly loved you are, how the world is a better place for having you in it & how many are in your corner - so much love to you always.' Comedian Dave Hughes agreed a beach walk could do wonders. 'Australia loves you, but that doesn't matter. You loving life is all that matters. But not even that. Let's just be still,' Hughes said Peter Helliar also offered his perspective, writing that sometimes noticing the little things that could make you feel better. 'Even tiny things like the way opening curtains to let light in your room can feel, the way fresh air can rejuvenate, seeing a friend,' he said.. 'We spend time waiting for big life changing moments but there are so many tiny life affirming moments around us everyday. I'm trying hard to recognise how those moments make me feel. Thanks for sharing and I hope you continue to find your moments.' Jones was the first Australian swimmer to attend four Olympic games, launching her spectacular career at just 15 at the Sydney Olympics and then going to the 2004 Athens Olympics, where she was part of the gold-medal winning women's 4x100m relay. She also won gold for the 100m breaststroke and the 4x100 medley relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and had a glittering career that included many other swimming achievements. Since retiring from the pool she has become an author and media commentator.
