UNIFIL spokesperson says peacekeepers can operate independently under Resolution 1701
Tenenti noted that the activity had been coordinated in advance with the Lebanese Armed Forces as part of support for Lebanon's implementation of Resolution 1701.
He added that while the situation was initially calm, it quickly escalated when civilians began throwing stones at the peacekeepers, prompting the use of smoke canisters to disperse the crowd and ensure the safety of U.N. personnel.
Lebanese army units later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
Tenenti reaffirmed that, as stated by both the Lebanese government and army, U.N. peacekeepers are permitted to move independently in southern Lebanon to carry out their duties under Resolution 1701 and do not require a Lebanese escort.
He stressed that any attack on U.N. peacekeepers constitutes a serious violation of international law and Resolution 1701 and urged Lebanese authorities to hold those responsible accountable.
He added that UNIFIL will continue to monitor and report all violations of the resolution impartially, in line with its Security Council mandate and at the request of the Lebanese government.

Lebanon sentences six Hezbollah members over 2022 murder of Irish peacekeeper
Private Seán Rooney an Irish UNIFIL peacemaker was shot dead in the head while serving with the 121st Infantry Battalion on a UN peacekeeping mission in south Lebanon. All fingers were pointed at Hezbollah for being behind his assassination. Lebanon sentenced six men over killing of UN peacekeeper , but Hezbollah as in previous assassination cases did not hand over sentenced members to the judiciary . UNIFIL urged the government to bring the perpetrators to justice. BEIRUT, July 29 (Reuters) – Lebanon's military tribunal has sentenced six people over the 2022 killing of an Irish peacekeeper in southern Lebanon, two judicial sources told Reuters on Tuesday, and a Lebanese security source said all six were members of Hezbollah. Hezbollah's media office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The judicial sources said one man was sentenced in absentia to death, another was sentenced to three months in prison and four others were ordered to pay fines ranging from about $1,100 to $2,200. A seventh man was acquitted. The judicial sources named the man sentenced in absentia as Mohammad Ayyad. The security source said Ayyad had been briefly detained in connection with the case then released. He could not be reached for comment. Private Sean Rooney, a 23-year-old peacekeeper with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was killed on Dec. 15, 2022 when the UNIFIL vehicle he was in was fired on in southern Lebanon. It was the first fatal attack on U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon since 2015. In January 2023, the Lebanese military tribunal charged seven people over the attack. In June of that year, a court document identified some of them as members of Hezbollah, the armed group that controlled the area of the south at the time the attack took place. The charges against the seven men ranged from murder to damaging a vehicle. In a written statement on Tuesday, UNIFIL welcomed the conclusion of the trial process and Lebanon's 'commitment to bring the perpetrators to justice.' Reuters

Kataeb holds Hezbollah 'entirely responsible for any security or political deterioration'
The Kataeb party on Tuesday denounced Hezbollah's "rejection of any discussion regarding the issue of disarmament" of the party, warning that it would hold them responsible for any potential deterioration of the security or political situation as international pressure mounts on Lebanon to put an end to this arsenal. Kataeb's statement, released after a meeting of the party's political bureau chaired by Vice President Bernard Gerbaka, echoed the statement by Lebanese Forces (LF) leader Samir Geagea, who also warned on Tuesday about the Lebanese government's inability to resolve the issue of Hezbollah's weapons. "Recent statements by U.S. envoy Tom Barrack clearly state that the deadlines granted to Lebanon are coming to an end," the party said, calling on the Lebanese state to "adopt a firm approach to impose its authority and enforce laws throughout Lebanese territory." Kataeb also held "Hezbollah entirely responsible for any security or political deterioration that may affect Lebanon due to this stubbornness," stressing "the dangers of delaying the implementation of international resolutions, particularly Resolution 1701." They also expressed "the need to fully support the army by providing it with weapons and improving the living conditions of its soldiers." This statement comes as the 80th anniversary of the army, on Aug. 1, approaches. Ahead of Aug. 4, marking the tragic fifth anniversary of the Beirut port explosion, Kataeb praised "the efforts of Judge [Tarek] Bitar and the progress made in the investigation," calling for "the publication of the indictment ... to launch the trials." The tragedy claimed the lives of more than 235 people and injured over 6,500, devastating entire neighborhoods of the capital following the explosion of a massive stockpile of ammonium nitrate improperly stored at the port since 2013. The investigation faces numerous political and security interferences, while several current and former officials are being prosecuted.
