Bride and Groom Have Wedding Guests Vote to Decide Their New Last Name: 'Reveal Was Hilarious!' (Exclusive)

Yahoo12-05-2025

Jasmine Moodie and Elle Upshall got married on July 13, 2024
The couple asked their 60 wedding guests to vote on what their new last name should be, Upshall-Moodie versus Moodie-Upshall. The winning surname, Upshall-Moodie, was dramatically announced during the wedding ceremony
"It was surreal to finally know who we were entering the next chapter of our lives as," Jasmine tells PEOPLEOne couple had a life-changing request for their wedding guests.
Before they were the Upshall-Moodies, they were Jasmine Moodie and Elle Upshall. When the United Kingdom-based couple of nearly 10 years sent out their invitations for their July 13, 2024, wedding at The Red Barn, Norfolk, they added an extra note in their RSVP.
"We asked for the usual response, dietary requirements and then the surprise surname vote!" Elle tells PEOPLE.
It would be entirely up to the couple's 60 guests to determine their new hyphenated last name, with the nominees being the Upshall-Moodies and Moodie-Upshalls. A few "fringe voters" wanted "the Mupshalls," but the suggestion didn't make the final cut.
"We're both really attached to our family name, it's part of our identity so we always struggled with the concept of one of us losing that," Jasmine explains. "As a queer couple too, it often feels like there's traditions in marriage that don't fit our story — taking the 'man's' surname has no relevance in our relationship, so we knew we had the freedom to do something differently!"
That's when the pair landed on having a double-barrel surname. Because they "couldn't decide between the two options," they thought they'd "have some fun with it" by giving "the power to our people."

From the start, the couple knew that they wanted their wedding to not only be about them, but also about their closest friends and family.
"We started incorporating elements of the day that would surprise and include our loved ones," Elle shares. "That's when we had the idea that we could get them to vote for our surnames — it doesn't get more involved than that!"
Wanting their new last name to be a "surprise" on the big day, Jasmine and Elle worked with Louise Gather from Kickass Gatherings to send out the RSVPs. The humanist wedding celebrant made sure votes were collected "blindly" in order to maintain secrecy.
"This way, we had NO idea what way the vote would swing, and when she pronounced us as wives we'd get the surprise gift from all of our guests — a new surname!" Jasmine says.
Wedding guests debated "for months" on which surname option was best. Some guests kept their votes "very secretive" while others "needed to talk it through." A handful of guests were so torn that they didn't vote until just a few days before the wedding.
"Funnily enough, the Upshalls were mostly team Moodie-Upshall and the Moodies were cheering for the Upshall-Moodies!" Elle says.
The wedding photography and videography team, Steff and Ells at Rebel Love Club, captured footage of the shocking reveal, which they described in the caption of their viral TikTok post as being "closer than Brexit."
During the "personal, funny and joyful" ceremony, Gather dramatically pulled the printed results from a gold envelope. When she announced that the winner —with 29 votes to 24 — was the Upshall-Moodies, "the whole barn erupted with cheers!"

"It was super special seeing everyone react after all the anticipation. And of course, seeing each other react to our new name!" Jasmine says. "I remember just laughing so much — both of our names are pretty unique and weird, so either combination has a fun sound to it. It was surreal to finally know who we were entering the next chapter of our lives as."
As their guests applauded, Jasmine and Elle raised both their arms up before sharing a kiss and repeating their new last name out loud.
"No matter what they'd voted, everyone got behind the new name in that moment!" Elle recalls.
Jasmine adds, "It felt like a joyful way to include their voice in our future — and the vote reveal was hilarious! We're so happy! We couldn't imagine it any other way."

Conner Smith's Rep Gives Update After Nashville Fatal Accident

Rising country star Conner Smith's representative has now responded to the news that Smith was involved in a fatal accident in Nashville, TN, that left an elderly woman dead. Smith's rep told People that he was 'involved in a car accident that tragically claimed a life.' Smith was not injured. The crash occurred on the evening of June 8, and Dorothy Dobbins, 77, was killed after being struck by a pickup truck driven by Smith, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department wrote in a news release. 'His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins' family during this incredibly difficult time,' Smith's rep's statement said, according to People. 'Mr. Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.' People noted that sources told the publication that Smith was not impaired at the time of the crash nor "distracted by his phone." Smith has 200,000 followers on Instagram. According to 9News, he is best known for the "viral hit 'I Hate Alabama' and released his debut album, 'Smoky Mountains,' in 2024." He "was nominated for New Male Artist of the Year at the ACM Awards last year," the station reported. "The pedestrian killed Sunday night after she was struck by a vehicle on 3rd Avenue North near Van Buren Street is identified as 77-year-old Dorothy Dobbins," police wrote. "The preliminary investigation indicates that a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by Conner Smith, 24, was traveling north on 3rd Avenue North as Dobbins was crossing the roadway," the release says. "It appears that she was inside a marked crosswalk when she was struck around 7:30 p.m. Dobbins, who lived nearby, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died." "The preliminary contributing factor for this crash appears to be Smith failing to yield the right of way to the pedestrian. He showed no signs of impairment. There are no charges at present as the investigation continues," the release Smith's Rep Gives Update After Nashville Fatal Accident first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 10, 2025

It features 12 songs that were arranged by Ghost Train Orchestra, a New York-based chamber ensemble. Byrne noted that the album will have "more story songs than usual." In addition, Byrne released his new single "Everybody Laughs," on June 10, which will make an appearance on the new album. The song was accompanied with a music video directed by Gabriel Barcia-Colombo. What they're saying "It took me a second to realize, oh yeah, these songs are personal, but with David's unique perspective on life in general," said Kid Harpoon (also known as Tom Hull). "Walking around New York listening to the demo of 'Everybody Laughs' was so joyous, because it made me feel like we're all the same – we all laugh, cry and sing. The thing about David that resonates with a lot of people is that he's in on the joke. He gets the absurdity of it all, and all of these personal observations are his perspective on it." Billy Joel's first wife walked out on him in hospital bed after motorcycle crash that nearly killed him

Billy Joel is reliving some of the most painful moments in his life. In the upcoming documentary, "Billy Joel: And So It Goes," the "Piano Man" crooner, 76, recalled the moment his first wife, Elizabeth Weber, walked away from their marriage shortly after his near-fatal motorcycle crash. "I always romanticized motorcycles. There's something about it. I feel like I can be completely disconnected from the world. There's a sense of freedom about that," Joel said in the doc, per People. Billy Joel Cancels All Concerts Due To Brain Disorder Diagnosis Joel said his admiration for motorcycles left Weber "scared all the time." "I on many occasions said to him, you know, 'You can't do this, this is dangerous,'" she said. Read On The Fox News App "Elizabeth had warned me, she said, 'Be careful, be careful, 'cause you're going to have an accident,'" the musician recalled. In 1982, Joel suffered multiple injuries after his bike crashed into a vehicle mid-intersection. "I was amazed I was still alive. I should have died in that accident," he said. "And I laid there in shock for a couple of minutes and I went to the hospital." The accident left him with a broken arm, leg and wrist. While he recovered in the hospital, Weber opted out of the marriage. "I would've stayed, I would've been able — like so many women before me — to make that accommodation for someone you love ,but there was no way that I could stand by and watch him kill himself," said Weber, who recalled placing the house key onto a tray in his hospital room. "I just didn't have that in me. And I felt very strongly that that's what was going." When Weber left the hospital, she recalled telling Joel, "You know, someday they may write about us and I hope that they say that we really did something." According to her, Joel responded with, "I hope they could say we went all the way." She added, "And that was it. That really was the final. That was it." The couple were married from 1973 until 1982. "After 'Glass Houses' came out I was always on the road, working, working, I look back on that guy and I don't even know who he was, he had to be so ambitious to work that hard and work that much," Joel said in the documentary. "So, it must have not been easy to be married to me at the time." "I wasn't asking him to change, but I just did not want to live like that. My response to it was to get a place in New York City where you can enjoy anonymity — so it wasn't so much as we separated, but we started to get a little bit isolated from one another and I also knew that he wasn't in a good place. We were all under a lot of stress," Weber said. "All of us dealt with our stresses in different ways. And so there was a lot, a lot of alcohol use and eventually a lot of drug use." When the musician was in his early 20s, Joel was part of a band called Attila with his best friend, Jon Small, who was married to Weber at the time. He ended up moving in with Small, Weber, and their son, according to People. "Bill and I spent a lot of time together," Weber confessed in the documentary, per People. She added that their friendship was gradual and a "slow build." Joel eventually told his best friend, "I'm in love with your wife." "I felt very, very guilty about it. They had a child. I felt like a homewrecker," Joel admitted in the documentary, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday. "I was just in love with a woman, and I got punched in the nose, which I deserved. Jon was very upset. I was very upset." Billy Joel Opens Up About Affair That Led To Two Suicide Attempts The betrayal not only ended Joel and Small's friendship at the time but also dissolved their band, Attila. Consumed by guilt and depression, Joel's personal and professional life unraveled, as he began to spiral. Click Here To Sign Up For The Entertainment Newsletter "I had no place to live. I was sleeping in laundromats, and I was depressed, I think to the point of almost being psychotic," Joel said in the documentary. So, I figured, 'That's it. I don't want to live anymore.' I was just in a lot of pain and it was sort of like why hang out? Tomorrow is going to be just like today is, and today sucks. So, I just thought I'd end it all." Joel's sister shared in the film that she was working as a medical assistant and gave him sleeping pills to help with the restless nights. "I went to go see him in the hospital, and he was laying there white as a sheet. I thought that I'd killed him." While Joel acknowledged that he had been "very selfish" during the tumultuous time, he recalled his first thought when he woke up from his coma was that he wanted to attempt suicide again. During Joel's second attempt at suicide, he ingested "lemon Pledge," a furniture polish. Miraculously, he survived both attempts, after Small rushed him to the hospital. "Even though our friendship was blowing up, Jon saved my life," Joel explained in the documentary. Fox News Digital's Stephanie Giang-Paunon contributed to this post.
