Tyron Dos Santos wins more gold as international dream draws closer

The Citizen31-05-2025
Tyron Dos Santos continues to soar, collecting gold medals and national titles that propel him onto international stages and bring his Olympic dreams within reach.
The 19-year-old trampoline gymnast has added another impressive string of accolades to his name, most recently securing four gold medals across two major competitions.
Tyron dazzled judges and spectators alike with his precision and flair at the University of Pretoria Gymnastics Championships, where he claimed two golds.
He followed it up with another double-gold performance at the Ekurhuleni Gymnastics Tournament.
These victories mark yet another milestone in a meteoric rise that began just three years ago in his backyard in Alberton.
Currently, Tyron is undergoing intense training in preparation for what may be the biggest challenge of his career yet – representing South Africa at the World Gymnastics Championships in Spain later this year.
'Every day in training counts now. I'm giving it my all,' he said.
However, the promising gymnast's journey is not without its hurdles. He is actively seeking sponsorships to help cover the costs associated with international competition.
Travel, accommodation, training gear, and coaching support all come at a price one that his family has often shouldered with great sacrifice.
He said that financial support would mean he can focus more on training and less on the logistics. Representing South Africa is an honour, but it's also a big responsibility.
Last year, Tyron missed the opportunity to compete at the African Gymnastics Championships in Zimbabwe due to delayed invitation letters.
'That was a tough setback. I had trained hard, but things didn't come together logistically,' he shared.
Tyron's commitment to his sport is unwavering. Training three times a week for two and a half hours per session, he balances a demanding academic schedule alongside his athletic pursuits.
At the National Championships in Cape Town last September, he earned two gold medals, making him one of the top trampoline athletes in the country.
Inspiration plays a crucial role in his journey. He credits his parents and coaches at the No Limits Trampoline Club in Kibler Park for nurturing his passion and guiding his development. International trampoline icon Ruben Padilla remains a key influence: 'His consistency and form really motivate me.'
With dreams of one day representing South Africa at the Olympics and coaching the next generation of gymnasts, Tyron exemplifies the discipline, perseverance, and passion the sport demands.
For now, all eyes are on Spain. Tyron's community, coaches, and fellow gymnasts believe in his potential and with the right support, he could soon be soaring on the world stage.

Olympic golden girl Tatjana Smith reflects on her year since retirement

It's been a year since Olympic gold medallist Tatjana Smith retired from competitive swimming. The 28-year-old renowned backstroke queen announced her retirement last year after winning two medals at the Paris Olympics 2024. She won a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke and a gold medal in the 100m backstroke. Reflecting on the year since her last strokes, Smith shared how her journey shaped who she is. 'One year ago today, I swam the last race of my career,' she said in an Instagram post. 'It still feels surreal. A journey that began with a dream ended up exceeding every expectation I ever had. Swimming gave me more than medals or records — it shaped who I am. It taught me discipline, resilience, humility, and the power of showing up, again and again.' Smith dedicated her last race to her family for their support. 'That final race wasn't just mine; it belonged to my family, who sacrificed more than most will ever know. Standing on the deck that day, I wasn't just closing a chapter. I was celebrating them and the rest of my team, their belief in me, and all the moments we lived through together. I even got to celebrate my competitors — witnessing them reach their dreams, knowing the work and heart behind every moment of success.' Smith started swimming at a young age, and she is now the most decorated athlete in South Africa, with a total of four Olympic medals, including two golds. 'Swimming gave me a stage — but more importantly, it gave me a purpose, a second family, and moments I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. The chapter has closed, but the gratitude never will.'

Major shake-up in world of cycling as Remco Evenepoel confirms NEW team

Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel will leave Soudal Quick-Step at the end of this season, the team said on Tuesday, and join Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe. The 25-year-old Belgian is one of cycling's brightest stars and won both the road race and time-trial titles at the Paris Olympics in 2024. He is also the current time-trial world champion, finished third at the 2024 Tour de France and has twice won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Monument race. Evenepoel also won his first Grand Tour, the Vuelta a Espana in 2022. 'Remco informed the team's management that he did not wish to discuss an extension of his current agreement, which expires at the end of 2026,' Soudal Quick-Step said on Tuesday. 'While we regret Remco's decision to leave, we will foster the memories that we have made and will continue to strive together to achieve some significant results for the rest of the season.' Red Bull-Bora boss Ralph Denk hailed the signing as a landmark one for the team. 'Remco brings not only exceptional athletic talent, but also a remarkable mindset. His determination, professionalism, and relentless drive to succeed are truly inspiring,' he said. Evenepoel will race alongside Tour de France breakout star Florian Lipowitz, who came third and won the best young rider's white jersey. Red Bull also boast five-time Grand Tour winner Primoz Roglic. Denk described Evenepoel's arrival as a sign of 'bold ambition to become one of the most attractive forces on the international cycling stage in the years to come'. Tyrell Stewart does the heavy lifting and needs some light help

Olympic weightlifter Tyrell Stewart has been selected to represent South Africa in the U17 men's 65kg category at the Commonwealth Youth and Junior Championships to be held in India from August 24-30. It was a mixture of heavy lifting, hours spent in the gym, and the mindset to always do better that helped guide the way for him to this ultimate show of glory. Read more: Is it safe for children to lift weights? His coach Steve Kafang, who couldn't be any prouder of him, said weightlifting is a sport that requires high skill to be able to perform well. 'This year was a big year for us,' he said. It all began with Tyrell's first competition in February, where, while performing the snatch as well as the clean and jerk, he lifted a collective 144kg. The second competition of the year, held in June, was the Gauteng Championships. There, while still performing the snatch and clean and jerk, with a body weight of 62.4kg, Tyrell lifted a sum of 158kg. 'This was built up to the performance at the SA Championships,' explained Kafang. Held in the Western Cape in July, the SA Championships also saw nothing but the best from this Northcliff High School learner. There, lifting in his second attempt at the snatch, he achieved his Personal Best. All in all, Tyrell ended the competition having lifted a total of 162kg, a performance that ultimately led to him being made Champion of Champions. The title makes him the best athlete in the country in the U17 category. To show the world his prowess, he is asking for the community's help to assist in sending him to India to compete in the Commonwealth Youth and Junior Championships at the end of this month.
